Thank you for not hiding this gorgeous woodpecker from us! A master of your level can turn a mistake (you're right, I'd never know those were mistakes) into something unexpectedly beautiful nevertheless, and there's a lesson in that alone.

Mistakes are just new learning opportunities. It's encouraging for newer artists to see experts making mistakes. Otherwise we end up believing their paintings come out perfect the first time around. Thank you so much for sharing this.

Now I really want to see all the paintings in your cupboard you consider failed. I bet they're still a thousand times better and nicer than mine 🥰 I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to see a "full length failed paintings video" now...!

Lol- thanks BV. I usually use the back of them to try out colours or sometimes I'll even do a quick study on the back and then I throw them when I've use both sides of the paper.

@@LouiseDeMasi How about the compromise of just shortly showing us these paintings before cutting them up/using the back? Maybe a whole video on all the "failures" would be too big of a challenge, but I could also spontaneously envision just 1-2 minutes of footage included in your normal videos like once a month or so that give a short rundown on what exactly you think you failed in the specific painting(s). I really don't want to overly challenge any anxiety or shame, but we all know you're a gorgeous painter (and teacher), and (*I* think) it's really encouraging for us learners to be regularly reminded of and see how a good artist "fails" too, and being made aware of errors/bad choices really teaches so much too (maybe even things that wouldn't be very obvious/mentioned in a "successful" painting/lesson). Maybe you're up for considering it to become a more regular thing - it's great to have you as a teacher either way of course 🙂

Adorable woodpecker. It is comforting to know that every painting you do doesn't always work out, however, like the blind hanger, I thought it was beautiful and wouldn't have thought there were "mistakes". "I'll do better next time" is a great way to deal with disappointment.

As mentioned by several, we are our own worst critics. I would like to think it’s because we’re always striving to improve and to learn more. I feel very fortunate to have found you on patreon, I have learned so much, you are a ….beyond….fantastic teacher and artist!! Your passion and love for watercolor painting has become mine as well….a wonderfully contagious and most enjoyable passion. Thank you Louise, you are just the sweetest lady and your bloopers are the best! I always get a chuckle.

My mistakes and failures are definitely worse and now I say “ oh what lovely bookmarks….” As I cut them up or of course use the back for tests. Steve Mitchell once quoted something like “ Be ready to be a beginner everyday” ( can’t remember the original author)and I repeat that quite often. Watercolors are addicting and challenging, maybe that’s why they are so much fun.. thank you for sharing and reminding us not to be so hard on ourselves.

You were quite right in the comment that you made stating if you hadn’t pointed the mistakes out to us, that we wouldn’t have known. I thought the bird was amazing & after your documentary had finished, I thought that you had fixed all your mistakes & that was the lesson here. I love how you tell us exactly when you wet the paper & paint,or paint on dry paper. Also why you are doing wet on wet, or wet on dry & the results thereof & sometime the results you would get if you did it differently. I hang on your every word & your tutorials are incredible, packed with information & the final result outstanding. I am binge watching all of your work & loving every minute. Cheers 😊😘💕❤️🥰😍

Lov your teaching about your mistakes along the way… it was extremely helpful to learn how to fix areas & how u did it… also how you “turn a failed painting over & use the back.” Brilliant as Arches paper is expensive & love to get a better result on same paper… excellent lesson. Oh & lov your bloopers at the end… the best part of your lessons… 😋

Louise, thanks for sharing this with us. It’s helpful to see how you went through the process, and that watercolor painting is not perfect. Watercolor is so alive. You helped me see; there are solutions, to not give up, and that paintings can turn out well even if they aren’t the exact way I intended. Beautiful painting. 🥰

I watched your video on blending recently and this video really shows your blending techniques in action. A really good takeaway was not to bring paint out to the edge of a wetted area to avoid accumulation of paint on the edge. Thank you

That's invaluable that you share with us experiencing mistakes❤ How many people drop painting because it seems that they'll never achieve what they think will look perfect or they won't see on paper what they had in their mind? I would start and drop watercolor many times because of this reason. It has only been few months since I've realized that the best way to learn is to accept your mistakes and treat them as a chance to develop my skills. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Thank you Louise very encouraging. I thought this philosophy could transfer to the mistakes we make in life. We don't get things right all the time but with a little care and patients not to mention not beating up on ourselves mistakes can be amended with good results not mention our development in such learning curves x

This is very encouraging especially for beginners and those of us (who, me?) who are too hard on ourselves. I have learned that mistakes are learning opportunities and it’s interesting to try and figure out how to fix them. And oftentimes, I end up loving the painting if I go back later to have another go at it. Thank you, Louise!

A great lesson for all of us; thanks Louise. With almost every painting I do, I'm saying to myself: I've ruined it already, this will never work...Sometimes they end up looking pretty good. In the beginning, I ruefully referred to French Ultramarine as "forget about it blue." But as you say, I realize that I always learn something, mostly from the failures.
