Brushes:
Brushes are important but you don’t need a huge number to be able to paint really well! I love Holbein Hake Brushes as they are softer, have less thickness and so hold a bit less water than the Ron Ranson Hake Brushes (which I like as it gives me more control). I like the thickness of the handle (thinner and lighter than the Ron Ranson Hakes) and the overall weighting of them. But having said all of that you could probably use any sort of hake (although I don’t love Art Spectrum’s Hakes).
Size 12 Round Sable
Pure Kolinsky Round Sable Size 12 - Cornellisen (quite expensive over $150)
geni.us/PureKolinskySableSize
geni.us/IsabeyPureKolinsky
or
Synthetic Round Sable Size 12 - Micadore For Artists - roymac Revolution Taklon - ($20)
geni.us/SyntheticRound
Hake Brushes x 3-4 (you could also get a wide 6”-8” hake brush if you wanted to)
Holbein 2.5” Hake Brush (my preference)
Holbein 2” Hake Brush (my preference)
Holbein 1” Hake Brush (my preference)
geni.us/HolbeinHakeBrush
or
Ron Ranson Large Hake Brush (about 2”)
Ron Ranson Small Hake Brush (about 1”)
geni.us/RonRanson
Flat Nylon
Long Flat Nylon - Robert Wade Neef 980 Taklon Wash: geni.us/RobertWadeNylon
Fan Brush
Fan Brush (I own size 1’s mainly and a size 6) - can be any brand really - I own two Winsor and Newton size 1 fan brushes and an Art Spectrum Series 1000FAN size 6.
I would get Hogs Hair Fan Brushes as they make more interesting marks but that is always personal preference. Some cheap ones on amazon are on the link below:
geni.us/DugatoFanBrushSet
Small Round Sable
Series 7 size ‘0’ Winsor and Newton Finish Round Sable (lovely small brush but more expensive than synthetic): geni.us/Series7WinsorandNewton
A cheaper alternative to the series 7 round sable is: Size 00 Winsor and Newton Cotman Round
geni.us/CotmanRound00
Mixing Brushes
Jasart 577 brushes Size 12 - for mixing brushes - you can get any hogs hair brushes you might use for oil paints. Very cheap! The link below is for a set of oil paint filberts which are perfect!

Other brushes you could get to help with your watercolours

Hi Tina! Yes I have been resting much more than normal that's for sure! It's funny but painting seems to help me to recharge my batteries so it's not hard for me to keep doing that! Thanks for your care. Warm wishes. Scott

Sorry you all got the dreaded Covid Scott and I hope you are all on the mend. Bold painting and I too have never seen paint sprayed on like that so was exciting and I think I was holding my breath through a lot of that. As usual a beauty and granulation was gorgeous. Good to have you back on deck.

So sorry, I had covid last week too, and it was really awful. I'm going back to work after being off for 2 weeks, and I'm so excited to go back. Feeling really grateful this morning for having such an amazing career, and feeling well enough to go back. I'm so glad you are on the mend. Best wishes to you and you family.

When I watch you creating your art, I have WTF moments when you put massive changes to the painting, but they always work so well. I need to be as brave as you! Great work.

Hi Mark! I think I have those moments on the inside too! I'm thinking this is going to shit! What are you doing!? But then I just keep going and trying to do something that will work in some way and get somewhere in the end. I really love trying to take myself down untrodden paths as my brain seems to love doing similar things each time I paint! Thanks! Good luck diving in! Cheers Scott

I hope you and your family are all feeling better!! So sorry you guys were sick :( This came out beautifully!! It always wild to watch you just do huge swaths of color over something that seemed done...super brave bold strokes...and they always seem to work :) Loved the spray bottle of paint thing :) I've has watercolor in a tiny squeeze bottle before to drip on or squeeze on from the edge..but never color in a spray bottle...super fun!! For you signature....its really hard, I think, sometimes, to find a good place to sign or want to sign at all because of feeling like it could take away from the painting...so you just use a similar color and lightly do it, use? We've talked about your bowls before...and I realized I have a bunch of short wide mouth jars...clear of course, but I'll use gesso (i have a bunch) and then more white paint on the outside to have my white background for my mixed colors...so I can just use what I have :) and, before, when making fermented foods, I use jars and a coffee filter over top held my the ring, so I can do the same, use the filter so that nothing gets in, but air can get in and out so it can dry and not spoil, and for times when it will be a while, like after my big surgery in March, ill let them dry out that way, then once dry ill put the normal lids on and can stack them up and away until I'm able to use my arms once I've healed some!! So....hopefully that will work...ill try some and we'll see :) I was getting the house ready and cleaning things out so that things will be easier after surgery, and saw the jars and BOOM, there it was :) it my be dumb and not work..but it wot hurt to try it out :) No worries when you don't talk...its fun to see you in the zone and enjoying yourself!! Thats what its all about right :) Thanks again!!
@ScottSwinson
@ScottSwinson 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a plan! Good luck with the surgery in March! It sounds like the jar thing will work. Like you say as long as air can get in and they can dry out naturally then it should be fine. I have only had issues when I have restricted the evaporation process too much and the water has become slimy! All the best. Scott

Wonderful stuff! Like a creative roller coaster… thanks for sharing! How do you stretch your paper? Soak it then tape? Tape it dry? Thanks!
@ScottSwinson
@ScottSwinson 2 жыл бұрын
Hi cgguido! For this painting I just taped down the dry piece of paper on all 4 sides. Sometimes I just attach it at the top or sometimes soak it and then just put it on the board with no attachment. Cheers Scott

Scott, what paper do you recommend. I mainly use Arches CP, or rough, sometimes heritage. Have used Bockinford, but not a fan.
@ScottSwinson
@ScottSwinson 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Glenys! Yes Arches cold pressed is really good and rough. I also like Saunders and Waterford 100% cotton paper. The paper I use all the time is Rives BFK etching paper. It is 100% cotton and is quite soft, it is probably halfway between cold pressed and hot pressed. I love it for working wet in wet and creating glowing skies due to how white the paper is compared to Arches cold pressed. Hope that helps! It always depends on many things like what you can afford, what are you painting and what you get used to over time. etc. etc. hope that helps. cheers scott
