Hi guys! Today we're talking about white paint. The bane of many hobbyists. It's hard to get good coverage, it takes forever to build up and mistakes show up so much more than with any other colour. I myself avoided painting white, especially panels unless I was using an airbrush, for many years until I ventured away from Games Workshop white paint, and discovered artist quality acrylic paint. In this video I'm using The White from the Kimera Kolors range, but here's a tip-any tube of quality acrylic paint will give you a better result than Corax White. You can pick up a tube of Titanium White from your local artist store, or order online. This will cost more than a pot of white paint from GW, but it's worth the investment and it will last a lot longer as well (without separating!). There's two grades to look out for depending on how much you are willing to invest-professional/artist quality, or student/hobby.
If you'd like to try out the Kimera Kolors range, they have a kickstarter running from April 20th, during which you can pick up their paints as well.

If you are looking to pick up some paint from an artist shop, look out for brands like Winsor and Newton, Daley Rowney and Liquitex.

Hope this tutorial helps you with painting not just the new Eldar Shining Spears bikes, but also with painting white in general for your Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar or even D&D models!

Let me know if you have any questions below! How do you feel about painting white?
@HauntedCorpseGaming

Not a huge fan of painting white but I find if you just go super thin with coats and one consistent stroke per section that is the key, for me anyway also using a specific brush solely for white that is practically brand new so the bristles are all consistent is another thing that makes a massive difference in laying a flat layer. I find the hardest part is just letting the coats dry completely before adding more paint since white loves to show the difference between layers and this causes "phtholes" to show up, lol. Just found your channel but could you record at 30fps instead of 24? Takes up more storage space to record but looks much better as 24 has an almost interlaced effect when you move around on the screen. :) Great channel!

@@MediocreHobbies So I actually got a tub of this a while ago and had a question regarding its use, do you use it like regular citadel paint(i.e prepare a thinned out dollop of paint on the palette) or do you just place some paint on the palette without adding any extra water and just use the palette to control the amount of paint in the brush?

@@MediocreHobbies Do you add any more water than what the pallet provides? I have mainly been using it like I use citadel which is to add some paint to the pallet and then thin it out with some additional water (typically a 3:1 ratio for base paints) so I have a prepared batch of thinned paint ready to go.

Great video as always Andy! Tbh, I was scratching my head on how you would manage to get a smooth white with GW paints. Using Kimera/Heavy body made so much more sense. ((: Fully agree. Heavy body acrylics for white, orange & yellow really are game changers. If you have the option, check out AKs and Pro Acryls white. While not as potent as heavy body paints, they are amazing! Used to hate painting white, now it's like any other colours! If people can't find GSW tape where they live. Check out Tamiya or 3M car paint tape (3M is the stuff they use when painting cars). They come in all sizes and the 3M ones are flexible so it's very easy to make bended lines and such. Been using those for years and they are awesome and never had any issues with the paint below peeling off.

It also gives you no ‘up’, which is why people use light grey as whites. Frankly no one can tell unless they have a patch of titanium white right next to them. I’ve been painting a white kill team for a friend and I mix ulthuan grey with ‘Amsterdam’ white ink and use that as the base. It leaves room for highlights and glazes to add volume. Additionally you can decide whether you want a warm or cold white. “But I just want a pure white for this”. That’s fine, I get it, we were all at that point at one time, it has its used and I like flat colors on some things too. I know people won’t like the answer but airbrushes are the way to go. Not just for white. It’s a world of difference and freed me from the rattlecans.

You decided to make a video to provide an option for a flat white coat to people, which is something many want, that's great. Really nice vid and a great tip on white paint. I know a lot of high end mini painters swear by Schmincke acrylic titanium white. But every painter that I've seen try Kimera paints *really* likes them. Since you brought up airbrushes in the video, I was wondering if you'd seen or had any experience with products like the Portable Airbrush Compressor from Green Stuff World. Ninjon tried a similar product that he ordered from Amazon on his channel not too long ago, and was pleasantly surprised by it's performance. It seems to me that, with its size, price, and quieter operation, such a compressor could significantly minimize the barrier of entry for those people considering getting an airbrush. I actually really like that you paint everything with a traditional brush. But if you have experience with this kind of compressor, or if you decide to try one in the future, I'd be interested in seeing a video that discusses them.
@MediocreHobbies
@MediocreHobbies 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t use an airbrush in my videos but I do indeed use one In my personal hobby. I don’t think portable compressors are for me. I use one wage an attached tank. This is what fills with air so you never lose pressure and cos the airbrush to spit. That could ruin a whole paint job. Of I was ever offered one or sent one I would play with it. And make some content.

Thanks for the vid and bringing that advice out into the world. If someone is looking for some brands that do not break the bank but also bring a name: Liquitex and Schminke are two heavy body whites that people in my bubble use. I have long switched to a cheap heavy body artist paint white simply because I had it in my collection for painting terrain and my White Scar white had gone bad (forgot to close the paint pot). Since it worked I have never switched back. I pay less than 2€ for 250ml and I am very happy with it.

Hey man, thanks for the comment. The video was about choosing the right type of white paint to achieve this look with a large number of options available from hobby/art stores. I happen to use Kimera paint as an example which has been out for a while and is currently on hold while they launch their Kickstarter for 3D printed models, along with which you will be able to buy their paints. The paints will be back for sale online as normal after the Kickstarter and are already available in some specialist shops. Hope this clears things up!
