The State of Play

Күн бұрын

How to Prime miniatures so you can get through that huge pile of shame is one of the things that slows us down. But what if there was a whole host of ways to prime so you can actually get things done quickly.
You don't always have to prime every miniature in black. In fact, I'd actively urge you not to. Try priming in multiple colours, try slapchop, try multi colour rattlecan spraying.
Stop thinking of priming as a first sticky layer of paint and think of it as you first colour layer instead!

Im a blood angels player, and I use contrast/speed paints. I suggest doing brown for your base, either tan or light brown for your middle layer, and off white with your drybrush. Or you can do brown base, red, bright orange drybrush. Then do your contrast paint over that. It makes your reds look better.

@@thestateofplay2023 if done right, your shadows will be a maroon color (light red looks when its in shadows) and your highlights will be bright red light the sun is hitting them, and everything in-between will be the proper shade of red for how much light is hitting it. yay, new video! wow, this is so impressive to watch... and at the same time so difficult! my brain started racing 5 times while I was watching it all... and this despite the fact that I already knew a good 60 percent... but don’t get me wrong, it’s not about the presentation, it’s about the material! it’s quite complex (if you’re not in the know), but it’s presented just beautifully! color theory haunts me throughout my life, but I try to avoid it... apparently it has won after all. 🤣 I tend to look at colour theory’s as A leads to B. So start with one colour and then work out the next. If I want my model to be say, green, I know I can use contrasting purple for shadows as well as dark green or blue because they sit side by side on the wheel.

This is one of those things that the fine scale modelers do well and that the miniature gaming world could learn from. I was a fine scale modeler long before I got into wargaming and I’ve always considered primer color before painting my little dudes because of that. Like the video mentioned, I too always just thought it was a lazy aspect of miniature painters wanting to get armies on the table as fast as they can. I’m now wondering if it is a lack of awareness of such techniques. I often see miniature painters “discover” something like it is some brand new technique that never existed. I’m looking at you SlapChop enjoyers. I’d encourage wargamers to explore fine scale modeler channels and even the model railroader channels. You can learn a lot from those folks and even learn techniques that they have been doing for decades. Techniques that should have been a thing long ago in this hobby.
@thestateofplay2023
@thestateofplay2023 Ай бұрын
I, like you, started as a scale modeller back in the 80s so brought much of the concepts over. I think miniature painters got used to quick drying acrylics. There’s are a few things I didn’t continue as we scale modellers don’t tend to touch a model after it’s finished so anything that could rub off got dropped.

Rattle can primer is just as good as airbrush primer if done correctly. If it looks splatter-y, then the temperature of your rattle can isn't optimal, giving you subpar results. It would be nice to see a video of you trying rattle can primer the right way, and clarifying that it's not worse than airbrushed primer.
@thestateofplay2023
@thestateofplay2023 2 күн бұрын
But it is worse, much worse because you don’t have precise control over how it goes on. You cannot control the pressure blast of a rattlecan. It will always flood the entire area and never subtly leave recesses untouched. A dual action airbrush allows for very precise air control on the trigger and thus paint control. You simply cannot do this with a rattlecan.

Top notch video. Lacquer toxicity, speckly rattlecan zenithals, black spray being the wrong choice for most colours are all things people need to hear. The one thing I'm dying for a good video on is primer durability. Consensus seems to be airbrush primer is far less durable than rattlecan and lacquers so the convenience doesn't feel like a good trade for gaming pieces. Are the molotow acrylics special in any way that makes them suitable as priming? The airbrush primers tend to be acrylic-polyurethane mixes (which assume makes them more hard-wearing) rather than just pure acrylic.
@thestateofplay2023
@thestateofplay2023 Ай бұрын
You don’t need primer. Primer is a myth. I’ve got unprimed models from 38 years ago with no varnish that look the same today as they did when I was 10. Most modern acrylic is tough enough to just stay where you put it. Molotow are graffiti acrylics. Designed to work on walls outdoors in all weather.

Interesting video. Back when I started painting seriously; in 2002ish, white primer was considered the "right way" to do it and black was considered "wrong". Then in recent years, the discourse seemed to have shifted to favour black priming (at least, that's what the best painters seemed to be doing), followed by an incredibly slow process of tediously layering up to the final colours. Which has never appealed to me much, being a bit of a "speed painter" at heart. Anyway, it's nice to see videos now discussing ways to get good results, faster, since the way some of the "best" painters work is completely impractical for the majority of us.

I agree. I started doing this in the mid 80s and the methods have chopped and changed over the years. Most of the best painters do it almost full-time so yeah, they can probably spend hours putting on a million layers. Some of us want to play a game. 🤣🤣

Please don't use normal rattle can paint. It has WAY more texture than specialised rattle can primer. The pigment isn't nearly as fine. And when you're painting something so small, you don't want large pigments. Obviously there is a place in this hobby for normal rattle can paint. But tiny models aren't it

I finally got my first air brush when I looked at a pile of used rattle cans and realized how much I was spending on rattle cans. I was shocked at how much I was spending on spray paint, when I couldn't even properly mix colours the way one can mix them with the air brush. I don't know why I was intimidated by the air brush and compressor.This video really is about working smarter rather than harder. It took me years to figure it out.

I have an idea for you to try. Do a colored zenithal using oil paints. Prime in white. Get some oils out, thin them down a bit (not to wash consistency). Apply different colors to different parts of the model, in the same composition as you would with an airbrush. Use makeup sponges to remove most of the paint, and q-tips with _very very little_ mineral spirits to remove a bit more from the brightest parts. Let it cure for 24 hours, and you've got a brilliantly, smoothly underpainted model with a lot of control, and vibrant colors where you want them. I think it has merit as an underpainting step for army painting.

Amazingly informative video! Your breakdown on color theory was great. I first started to learn about color theory more recently from Marco Frisoni's YT channel. Using your primer as a way to accentuate and play with your color tones will not only save time, but drastically increase the quality of your paint job. Creating depth and smoothness, but saving you lots of effort. Also, anyone considering buying an airbrush, remember, it doesnt have to be an expensive one. There are plenty of airbrush + compressor bundles that are under $150. Especially for priming, you dont need a pinpoint airbrush. It's not even 100% necessary for accomplishing precision work, though it helps.

Hi there, you forgot to memtiom that with rattlecans the darker the pigment the thinner the paint therefore gives a thinner coating, and in your shots of using a rattlecan there was no stopping to let any layer dry. Black rattlecan is the best option outside of using an airbrush since it gives a smooth uniform coverage and can easily undercoat 200 models for £10, and at around 40 models in 30 minutes doesnt take long at all. All about technique :D
@thestateofplay2023
@thestateofplay2023 Ай бұрын
Yes I’m afraid I disagree with a lot there. The pigment size in rattlecans is all the same. The don’t grind darker pigment finer 🤣 it appears like thinner layers because it covers quicker. But you could stop at the same point with any colour. So the volume of paint in the can will coat the same number of models whether black or white. 👍🏼 As for waiting for a layer to dry, I was spraying in 30 degrees heat. It was almost drying in the air that day. As you can see by the closeup models in the video - all were fine. 👍🏼

I needed to paint 16 identical army troops and found a good camo green that both primed and served as the base coat for a large chunk of the minis. Also bought a dark blue primer to get a start on a similar lot of mobsters wearing dark suits. It was extremely helpful but this vfdeo opens up many more possibilities by adding a 2nd color to the mix.
