This is my step-by-step guide on how to paint glow/glowing effects which I painted on a Necron Monolith - this technique could easily be used without an airbrush too! Just would require some dry brushing. I will be releasing another video in a few days with a guide on the entire Monolith! Subscribe so you don't miss it!
Paints I used -
Vallejo Model White
Vallejo Model Fluorescent Orange
Vallejo Yellow Game Ink
I used this technique to paint all of my Overgrown Necrons. Subscribe to see a guide on how I painted the Monolith!

Awesome tutorial! perfect for my necrons! A bit of a tip, at 1:45 ish I noticed when pulling back on the airbrush you would release before coming froward to stop the spray from the nozzel and in the past I would do the same and it caused some paint to make its way back behind the trigger section of the needle and caused some clogging. It also helps avoid dry tip or clogging out the front of the nozzel as well so it is just good practice to cut the paint flow but still let the air blow for just a moment before releasing to avoid any of that along with the bit of paint buildup at the tip that can sometimes fling onto a project and ruin it. (You may totally be doing it just fine and it's hard to see but just looking out!) :)

Awesome advice! Thanks 😊 yeah in between spraying I normally spray air to the side away from the model to avoiding this. But sometimes it still gets me ha. I will make a note of your advice for next time! I'm sure it will save me alot of time.

Hello Mr Slayer, not sure if you'll reply to a question on a video that's a few years old. But I just wanted to know if: 1) Do you thin your paints with a thinner at all? 2) Could you replace the fluorescent Orange with fluorescent green from the same range and would it still work? 3) Do you swear by game colour yellow ink or would any alternatives work?
@SlayerMiniatures
@SlayerMiniatures 4 ай бұрын
I try to reply to all messages:) 1. Anything that goes through the airbrush needs to be the consistency of whole milk or thin cream. So I always thin anything that is too thick. Inks and contrast paints are fine as they are. It's normal base paints that normally need thinning. 2. Yellow and green work well together so switching out the orange for green should work. I'd advise doing a test on paper or something first to see what the effect will be. If I was to do a green glow I'd do green and yellow too. 3. The game ink is very vibrant and good, but contrast paints weren't really a thing at the time. Iyanden Yellow contrast paint is just as good to be honest. But it will pool more than the Vallejo ink as contrast is a tad thicker.

Do you take any special consideration making what is not hit by the light darker? More shadows to create bigger contrasts?
@SlayerMiniatures
@SlayerMiniatures 6 ай бұрын
I try to work out where the light would hit and where it would cast shadow and only paint the glow in the light parts. Leaving the shadow the original paint colour. If you darkened the shadow more than the original colour I think it would look odd and not blend in with rest of the paint job.

Amazing effect and amazing video! Just the right length for convenience. Do you have any recommendations for attempting a green glow with this method? The white and fluorescent green seem obvious, but that yellow is really what makes it pop, and the yellows I've tried don't play as nicely with the green as they do the orange. Should a green glow just be green and white with no yellow tint?
@SlayerMiniatures
@SlayerMiniatures 7 ай бұрын
Glad you liked the video:) for green I'd probably experiment with green base, white highlight (same as this video) and maybe mix in a bit of yellow to the green. That should really make it pop. Alternatively you could use the Tesseract Glow or Hexwraith Flame paints from games workshop. They will make any white highlights very bright and any be darker in non white area

What was your technique for thinning the Fluorescent Orange for the airbrush?
@SlayerMiniatures
@SlayerMiniatures 9 ай бұрын
Just the paint and some airbrush thinner. That's it. It needs to be as thin as milk

just curious, what size of nozel would you recommend when doing necron energy overall (i mean, the normal warriors, overlords and vehicles,) i have been looking at a 0.3mm but not sure if its to big for normal units
@SlayerMiniatures
@SlayerMiniatures Жыл бұрын
I size of the nozel doesn't make a huge difference in my opinion. It you can control how much paint comes out with practice. I use iwata airbrushes which are all 0.3 I think. Hope that helps

@@SlayerMiniatures - hi, sorry to necro an old thread but I'm thinking of doing this in blue. When you say you used nihilakh, how do you mean? Did you do blue fluorescent and then use nihilakh in place of the ink in the last phase? Thanks in advance.

The fluorescent paint was probably 1-1, same for the white. I just eye ball it. You want the consistently of single cream. The yellow was not watered down at all. Hope that helps
