This video is sponsored by ‪@DixieBellePaint‬. I'm taking this old provincial dresser and giving it a rustic driftwood look without sanding it down to bare wood and staining. I'll be using paint and glaze to lighten it up. This faux wood painting technique is easy enough for beginners. You are going to love this furniture makeover and the result of this faux wood finish.

Glazing painted furniture to look like wood was popular back in the day. Big impact for little money and time. I remember doing baseboards in the house we grew up in. Really easy but man we made a mess! Love to see it's coming back around. Now I want to paint a hand me down laminate table and bring back memories of projects with my Mom.

Thanks for sharing! Love this! Yes, there is a video that is 8 years old from HGTV with this technique and it looks like it was filmed in the early 2000s or late 1990s. And it sounds like it had been around longer than that. Love how things come back around.

Shout out to Black Sheep House. On one video, the grain lines go horizontal all around, but I think I like the vertical taped off technique for realism, even though it takes longer. Behr makes a stain/poly product that adds color that might be cool to experiment with on this technique.

@@ChristinaMuscari however I took your flotral and silk mixture recipe (using opulent) for the ‘grain lines’. You did this on your China Cabinet to buffet makeover. Then no top coat is required and it leaves a nice matte durable finish. Shannon uses glaze, which works great but takes several days to dry and then topcoat. So I use your trick for the grain using an all in one paint. It is quicker and I love the finish. Dixie belle seems to have a new glaze formulation with a longer open time. But I am sticking withe the glaze option/application you demonstrated.

I would suggest that you try to keep the brush going straight over the curved parts when dragging through the glaze as opposed to following the curves. Real wood grain doesn’t follow the cuts of the curves. Really pretty end result.

That turned out beautiful! I have a dresser done by my parents in the early 70’s. Question: why do you paint, rather than spray, on the sealer? I know nothing about paint sprayers. 🙂

Tedious but well worth it, beautiful. First time I tried this I followed a tutorial which a real straw broom was used! Nope, don't do it unless your rustic look includes small straw bits in the finish, lol

When you say the flow pretty opened I am having a hard time with this on my Wagner sprayer but do you mean you turn the knob a good amount counterclockwise from the completely tight clockwise position? If that makes any sense at all lol

Turned all the way in the plus sign direction. That means its "open' and more material aka paint will flow through.

The tape in my opinion is not necessary just make this process more work. I do a similar finish all the time and never use tape. Glaze has a long enough work time that if you mess up you can easily fix it.
