How to Paint Foam (Ultimate List of Styrofoam Safe Spray Paint)
Today I show you 3 spray paints I've personally used on foam. These are "water based" paints that can be sprayed up close and not melt styrofoam. I also show you three more paints that shouldn't melt polystyrene either, though I have not tried these yet. I also answer why these paints don't melt foam and why you may want to use spray paint on a styrofoam project.

The Montana seems super vibrant! Thanks for this very useful video; I don't work with spray paints for my miniatures, but I do use it for my outdoor furniture projects :)

Montana is high pigment. It may seem expensive to some people but it really goes a long way.

Informative! Thanks. You aren't kidding, about the possibilities. Just in time savings, alone, these would be worth it. Next time I need rattle cans, I'm def going to look for some of these. Nice

Thanks! It seems a lot of people aren't into saving time, but I definitely find it worthwhile for the smaller builds.

Good info! That marking paint - In one of my previous careers, I used thousands of cans of that stuff in various colours (orange/red/yellow) to mark buried utilities. Its designed to only spray while the cap is held downwards towards the ground (so the reverse of the usual cans) and it is designed to break down out in the elements. You can spray it in grass and whatnot and it won't leave a dead patch. I seem to recall its a bit thick and chalky. I may have some that are still viable, if I can find one I'll test it out. Cheers!

It also depends on how dense the foam is - for example, the pink foam board for insulation. Krylon fusion worked GREAT for it, a light coat and not so much as a sound. It looks like it slightly rounded edges, but it's completely intact for my terrarium waterfall 'slate'. Cheers, thanks for the video!

And FWIW Fusion was the only reasonably priced paint I could use for a terrarium, supposedly water safe

I have relatively easy access to Montana stuff here, good! The only thing I'd be concerned about is price, if these are much more expensive this might stop people from doing it
@ArtJeremiah
@ArtJeremiah 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I understand. For me it's worth the price and I only use it for smaller pieces or hard to reach areas.

AND you can use minwax wipe on poly and rust-oleum oil base enamel directly on FOAM, we discovered this while painting an Arrow foam Corsair. I happened to get some oil base paints on the foam packing and realized that not only does it not dissolve the foam, it bonds very well to the foam. The cheap paint that came on the plane peeled of with some Blue tape that I had painted with some latex water base paints; We even poured some paint thinner on the foam and it pooled on the foam but Did Not Dissolve the foam. Yes, you can coat your Foam plane with oil base poly, paint etc, resulting in a Hard structural skin.

In your experience how does the montana spray paints, and the other paints mentioned, react to purple insulation foam? Is it any different or does it work smoothly?
@ArtJeremiah
@ArtJeremiah 5 ай бұрын
They all work well for painting it. No chemical reaction. That said I think my preference these days is the MTN water-based (Montana brand), it doesn't tend to bond well and not clog the nozzle as much.
@courtNOTlove
@courtNOTlove 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for video! Do you recommend a foam sealant in combination with these spray paints? If so, which?
@ArtJeremiah
@ArtJeremiah Жыл бұрын
I believe MTN has a waterbased sealant but I usually just use any sealant. If you build enough layers of paint, it shouldn't melt.

What about if we have to paint a large Styrofoam board what kind of paint in a Gallon size?
@ArtJeremiah
@ArtJeremiah 4 ай бұрын
You should be safe to use any acrylic based paint that comes in a gallon. I most commonly use house paint to paint my foam these days.

Attention: Having just bought 5 cans of Montana paints for a miniature/scenery project, I found out that they clog details very heavily. Even with the right technique and layering, as you can see in the video they have a huge output which is great for graffiti but not for detailed work! They're surely great for other things

Thanks for sharing your experience. I would recommend possibly getting some aftermarket caps to prevent this. Also, I tend to store my caps in alcohol in between sessions.

NOW... after it is coated with a non melting spray paint "maybe two coats", can you use other paint that would normally melt Styrofoam? I would think it would be ok. maybe that paint would dissolve the original layer of paint.
@ArtJeremiah
@ArtJeremiah 2 жыл бұрын
As long as there is a thick enough coat then yes you can spray normal paints on the project. I would still be cautious about it though, building the harsher paint up in layers.

You can just stand the paint can further back, acetone dissolves really quick in air, 12 inches is normal.

Yes sir, I made a mention of that. The paints listed in this prevents you having to do so. That way you can spray up close paint designs as well as get inside hard to spray areas. It's extremely helpful.
