being a new modeler we find means and methods hard to find, so we just stumble upon them, like this.. AND you can use minwax wipe on poly and rust-oleum oil base enamel directly on FOAM, we discovered this while painting an Arrow foam Corsair. I happened to get some oil base paints on the foam packing and realized that not only does it not dissolve the foam, it bonds very well to the foam. The cheap paint that came on the plane peeled off with some Blue tape after I had painted with some latex water base paints; We even poured some paint thinner on the foam and it pooled on the foam but Did Not Dissolve the foam. Yes, you can coat your Foam plane with oil base poly, paint etc, resulting in a Hard structural skin.

@@thetacticalnerdist7865 yes, we all need all the help we can find. I was amazed that the foam worked so well with oil based polys and paints, even paint thinner. We found that using water based primers was not necessary and did not fully bond to foam. I had gotten the impression from people concerned about spray paint cans that all oil based solvents would dissolve foam, but now we know it's the acetone. And remember to store your spray paint cans on the side, not upright, so that the pigment will stratify on the side of the can and not the bottom.

I think your three videos are filled with more info then most forums out there that cover this subject but, I didn't learn this from your channel...the RC plane community has been using Minwax products for years. I'm sorry if I gave the Idea I was trying to steal you content and not give you credit. Your channel is amazing and I think diorama builders can learn a lot from the D&D community! I'm part of the 1:12 scale diorama community and I haven't seen anyone cover this in my community yet so i decided to cover all the techniques out there but, I didn't get to cover the water down pva technique that train model scenery builders use. I want to add I know my comment seems a little rude but, I do have a lot of respect for all Crafters and I wouldn't give credit to someone that I didn't know created a technique so I post things I've learned.

Most of the time, it's the solvents (paint thinners) that are added to spray paints that is damaging foam. When you spray it from a longer distance, there's more time for those thinning solvents to evaporate in the air before it lands on your project. A warm water bath also helps the solvents evaporate into the air faster. Obviously if you're working on something that is detailed, you might need a sealer, but if you're trying to disguise exposed exterior xps from a duct... this is a different story. Spray paints require solvents to make them thin enough to be sprayable. Every single spray paint is different, even if two colors by the same maker. Some colors require more pigment powers which makes the paint thicker, and that means it will need more solvents to be sprayable. Obviously use a paint that's compatible with the foam you're using, just keep in mind that if it's in a can, it's going to have some paint thinners in it.

@TeamRacer21
@TeamRacer21 4 ай бұрын
While the spray poly seems to hold up fine on the smooth, finished exterior of the foam, if there are any scratches or gouges that expose loose interior foam, this eats it right up, and will leave your foam wrecked. Also, as others have mentioned, the aerosol is the main issue, not the poly itself. If you were to brush on poly, it would work great.

I have a foam board model that I'd like to prime and paint. I understand that the aerosol is what eats the foam but do you have any tips for doing foam board? Much appreciated
@thetacticalnerdist7865
@thetacticalnerdist7865 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response, foam board is a little tricky just because they're different types for example the covering on foam board can very from a light/heavy card stock covering as well as mat/glossy coating. Not to mention not all foam board is created equally. All foam board is open cell foam which means there is little air bubbles in the foam but depending on the quality of the board those air bubbles are either really tiny or slightly bigger. I promise this is going some where lol. I Would recommend when priming/painting foam board you would want to prime/paint both sides of any flat surface. If you don't you can get some warping due to those air bubbles on one side of the foam board getting filled in when you prime/paint. As for what to prime with I would recommend latex house paint. The key is to make sure to get at last two light but even coats on all surfaces especially the exposed edges. Then you can paint your project with apart paint with no problem. I hope your foam board model came out good🖒🏼

You can get away with one even and thorough coat but I would recommend at least 2 to 3 coats. Just because it goes on clear and you can miss a spot on your project leaving parts unprotected.

It's the aerosol itself that eats the foam. Anything that comes out of an aerosol can will cause it to melt. Even hairspray. If that same paint were sprayed from a mist pump bottle, the foam would not melt.

You can use spray paint as long as you are not too close and you let the propellant evaporate before continuing to apply paint. Aerosols have a mixture of paint and propellant and it's the propellant that's eats the foam

Thank you very much for this video. I'm a bit confused and think maybe you mean ''how to prime your Foam board project'', rather than how to seal it. I mean imagine I paint my whole project and then use a mod podge with the black paint to ''Seal'' it? then all my project will become just black. I guess you are sealing the finishing project with the spray you are spraying in the end. What is the name of the spray please? some use just mod podge to finally seal their canvas. but on a Foam board, I do not know what to use to seal it with. This video seems to be showing how to prime a Foam board before we start painting on it I guess.
@TheTyrant
@TheTyrant 3 жыл бұрын
do you paint then seal it? or seal it then paint it? with the polyurethane i mean.
@thetacticalnerdist7865
@thetacticalnerdist7865 3 жыл бұрын
If you're using arousal paints you seal it with the polyurethane first. It gives you an extra layer of protection from most spray paints eating at the foam. If you're not comfortable with your spray painting technique beacuse it is possible to spray paint foam without sealing it. As long as you spray at good distance (6 to 8 inches or what's recommend by the manufacturer on the back of the can) and lightly mist you project in small burst, I recommend practicing on scrap foam. I hope this info was helpful and thanks for the question🖒🏼

Why does my mod podge make everything peel up…? What am I doing wrong
@thetacticalnerdist7865
@thetacticalnerdist7865 2 жыл бұрын
Moisture can play a big part of why it peels. If you have high humidity where you live it can cause peeling, if your paint is not 100% dry before you mod podge, or it can be the surface of your project can be to smooth causing peeling. I don't know your exact situation but here are some tips that might help. 1: If you think your project surface is to smooth try using a fine sandpaper to give your project a light sand to give some tooth to keep your paint and mod podge something to grip preventing your mod podge from shrinking and peeling off. 2: try applying thin layers of mod podge at a time giving plenty of time for each layer to dry this will help if you have light humidity (atleast 3 layers). 3: make sure your mod podge is properly mixed. And 4: if you're thinning your mod podge with water make sure you you keep your mix to 1 part water to 4 parts mod podge which is the recommend ratio given on the mod podge forum if I remember right. I hope this helps with your peeling issues and I hope your next project is a success🖒🏼
