Ever since I was a beginner to watercolor painting, I've loved the act of pulling beautiful shapes out of a wet-in-wet wash of color. There is something so peaceful about studying the shapes on the paper and defining them to suggest leaves, flowers, the contours of the natural world. In order to do this well, you need to understand the concept of NEGATIVE PAINTING, defining the shape AROUND a shape to make the lighter shape stand out.
It's easy to get lost in negative painting, or to be intimidated by this technique, but you don't have to avoid negative painting! The first step is simply to find ONE shape and define part of it. And negative painting never lives alone; it's a technique that works well with the traditional positive painting process, they really go hand in hand.
In this demonstration, I'm going to walk you through the FULL process of painting a wet in wet background in watercolor, using my favorite paints from Daniel Smith Watercolor, and then we'll move to defining the shapes and creating vibrant autumn leaves. I'll share secrets for keeping your colors vibrant, avoiding overworking and review a new paper I'm trying from Hahnemühle.
Notice as well that this is NOT the first time I've painted this subject! When I compare the first and second versions of this scene, the second version feels fresher and stronger to me. This is not surprising - giving myself a second opportunity to paint this subject allows me the chance to correct any weak areas in the first painting and have a more strongly defined goal for the painting.

How I love watching you make magic! Thank you so much for this demonstration. Although I've tried to respond to the paint and what it's doing, I never end up with the vibrancy and flow that you do. I mostly get a mess, so it's a treat to observe how you create. Thank you!

For every one that turns out well, there are usually 9 more that served as "development pieces" to show me what NOT to do! 😝 I think the most important tip I can offer is SLOW DOWN. When I move into this style of painting, it's so important to let go of any urgency so I can notice the painting and let each stroke be guided by the one before it.

Looks like all artists teachers are promoting Hahnemule collection 300 gr watercolor paper. Isn’t Arches importing paper anymore? Just listened to Vlad Yeliseyev earlier who also uses this paper cold press...great for reflection of water with dry brush.! Beautiful colors on this painting Angela. I own none of these colors. I’ll play with my own collection in the negative space technique. Thank you again for your pleasant demo.

Dear Angela, I watch this video back, because I was looking for the name of the Hahnemuhle paper, but couldn't resist to look the complete video. Again I was impressed by your intuitive negative painting. You really are a tranquilizer in action! I saw you use an Old Halland blue and I think it's not marine blue, for OH doesn't have that color. As far as I can analyze from behind my computer, I'd say it is Scheveningen blue. Could that be so? Heartled greatings, Petra

That's beautiful but it looks like a sunset when you turned the painting on it's side. The colors work very well together. I don't see any leaf's though? Is it just me? I don't know. That's the problem I have when I paint. I have to make sense of what I'm painting when I paint it? I would love to make marks on paper and have it turn into something but I don't have that talent?? I love watching you paint. Your just so talented. Thank you for sharing. 🌞🇺🇸🌴 FLORIDA.

Thank you! I really like this process of "suggesting" a shape rather than painting it in detail, so this level of looseness works for me. The more I paint, the more comfortable I get with doing it my way - don't worry about whether or not you have talent - there's no true way of deciding who has talent and how much is necessary to make good art!

Hi Angela. I’ve used watercolours for some time, self taught and overly detailed, but reasonably successful. However, when I try these loose wash type of paintings, my colours are not as vibrant as I think they should be. The question I have is, does it matter what water you use? We are Canadian, north of Winnipeg and rural. I have been using our well water. Should I be using filtered water instead?

I don't live in Canada and I'm not a famous watercolorist or anything but I think it does matters what kind of water you use. I'll use City water and then I'll use bottled water and they're both different on the outcome of my painting. I hope this helps.

I use well water also - I have heard that distilled is the best for watercolor but never remember to keep a supply on hand. I wouldn't expect the issue to be your water. I do use quite a lot of pigment - if your paints are quite hard in the pans, you have to work up a bit more pigment than you might otherwise. I really like the vibrancy of Daniel Smith, Schmincke, Sennelier and QoR paints. Another factor to loss of vibrance is how much time you spend moving the paint around. If you are working your brush quite a lot in the painting, you might be flattening out the pigments and causing less refraction of light? I use a very light touch.

@@angelfehr Oh WOW 😲 that's true you don't touch the paint that much. I'll have to try that never even thought of that. Thank you ❤️. Yeah because when I try and paint how you do my paint starts out vibrant and then I move it around with the brush it becomes dull. Also if I add too much water. Happy painting 🎨🌞🇺🇸🌴 FLORIDA. I'll have to try distilled.

Great video overall, but there were some very strange mic noises. Have you changed something about your setup recently? It seemed to me like every time you bumped your table the mic rattled or picked up on the sound of the table (or things on the table) rattling or something like that. I'm super sensitive to things like that, so maybe it's only me, but figured I'd mention it on the off chance it's something easy to fix. Really enjoyed watching you paint this and hearing your thoughts as you went along :)

I think your pronunciation is very good! No point in getting it 100% right, you’re an artist not a language teacher. It’s close enough so that both German speakers as well as non-German speakers can understand it. Besides that, it was a very inspiring video, as usual, with a beautiful painting as a result. Thank you!
