This is the best and easiest way to paint over water damaged ceilings. Guaranteed to block the stain and prevent it from bleeding through your fresh final coat of paint. Many people try to paint directly over a stain hoping that it will block or cover the stain and most unfortunately fail. Even if you applied 5-10 coats of paint some stains will simply continue to bleed through ruining your finish. This can be applied to both walls and ceiling. The product is a four in one primer, undercoat, stain blocker and sealer and depending on where you are using this product and what you are trying to cover you will have 3 options to choose from. The product is ZINSSER 1.2.3, B.I.N and cover stain. Although any one of these 3 products will be able to take care of the issue, they each have their individual strengths over another. I found if your in an older house with hardwood the dark brown tannins come through onto the ceiling with a water leak. Go the Yellow Oil based Zinsser with 2 coats m then 2 coats of ceiling paint for these dark stains, works a treat!

That looks like just the product I need! However, for a small (say 5 cm) wide water stain on a large ceiling, can you get away with painting just the impacted area, or do you need to paint the entire ceiling?

Can you do the same thing over a plaster ceiling. The plaster doesn't look damaged. The plaster does not look damaged just unfinished

Zinsser has a few different products which did you use? Depending on the stain will use different products, usually oil based (yellow can) does the trick on most stains or I may have to use zinsser BIN ( red can) when that dosnt work.

Every job will vary slightly. Firstly a general all purpose joint compound is usually my go to product. If you want it to dry quick you can use a heat gun/ hair dryer to speed up the dry time. If it needs to be laid thick then I will use quick set for the first coat followed by general all purpose. I probably should do a video on this in the future to clarify, hope this helps 👍

Underlying cause may not have dried out that’s what happen to me. Have to way doesn’t feel like a cost of.about a 2 months after leak was permanently resolved and then used the stain blocker
