In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm (/ˈælɡərɪðəm/ (audio speaker iconlisten)) is a finite sequence of well-defined instructions, typically used to solve a class of specific problems or to perform a computation.[1] Algorithms are used as specifications for performing calculations and data processing. By making use of Artificial Intelligence, algorithms can perform automated deductions (referred to as automated reasoning) and use mathematical and logical tests to divert the code through various routes (referred to as automated decision-making). Using human characteristics as descriptors of machines in metaphorical ways was already practiced by Alan Turing with terms such as "memory", "search" and "stimulus".[2], bill.

I make my own iron oxide (RUST). I take about 4 rolls of 0000 steel wool and put them a quart jar of white vinegar and set it in the kitchen window for about a month. After the steel wool forms rust, I pour the mixture into a large pan (I use my old darkroom 11"x14" stainless trays for fixing photos) or a shallow baking dish. After about 2 to 3 weeks when the mixture completely dries, I use a single edge razor blade to pulverize the contents into a fine powder and store it in little snuff tins until ready for use. Every batch I've made comes out a little different colour. Since I model HO scale, I never use any weathering powders; instead I go to the dollar store and buy women's makeup in the little plastic cases. For $1.00 you can get quite an assortment of colours and they adhere better than any chalks (pastels) or weathering powder. Of course you still have to fix the model with flat lacquer (I usually use Dullcote), I also buy white chalk and crush it up and use acrylic paint or food colouring to get the colours I want. My rust looks real, well, 'cause it's REAL RUST! Cheers from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee

You forgot to mention the hairspray method, which gives the best results. 1. Paint the item in undercoat. Let dry. 2. Paint orange/brown colour all over. Let dry. 3. Spray on extra hold hairspray. Let dry. 4. Paint top coat colour. Let dry. 5. Using an ear bud, work over the model brushing off areas where you want rust to show through. Done.

Yeah, excellent metal decay right there! I believe that for the toothbrush part of the salt method it works better if the brush is moist. Also worthy of mention is the sponge method, basically the paint method but using a sponge to apply the rusty colors, looks more random and "natural" Edit: Fixed the overabundance of "sponge", clearly needed more coffee :P

Great ideas, but Here in Australia a company has made it easy to make the pastels into powder, the tool is in a rectangle shape with a piece of mesh that is in the middle and you rub the pastel on the mesh and you get a lovely powder weathering powder and you use a bonding medium and you got your rust or earth, and build up snow and ice. cheers.

Whats nice is that each technique give the rust a different flavor (coming from an amateur rust taster). The "just paint" give an indoor rust where its not exposed to elements, but metal has a thin rust. The textured paint is like a rusted hull of something found by the sea. While the powders give a rusty look you'd find the desert. Wonderful stuff.
