Stone walls aren’t grey and flat / they’re full of colour and texture. Painted in three simple stages using three distinct washes I show you how to paint stone walls which will enhance your landscapes. The final wash might be a case of "feel the fear and do it anyway"! Have fun!

Thanks for not having a long intro and getting straight to the painting technique. Really helpful video for painting rocks.

You’re welcome. I often refer to KZfaq when I need to find out about something and hate the pointless chat and irritating music that many youtubers deem necessary. 😊

Thankyou very much for this. I visited our local church with light sand to very dark walls nearly black or dark green blue colour, gravestones etc and wondered how to mix. Thank you Mike

Geeez! You are such a freaking good instructor! Of course it is not exactly as easy as you make it look but after a few attempts it becomes a bit easier to obtain similar results.

Just as another viewer commented ....How did I not find this sooner? I've been on a mission to be better able to "render rocks". This is direct information that is immediately doable. Thank you, I'll be searching for all your offerings, I like your way.

I also am about to do a stone wall and yes I usually paint each one individually. Now I am going to do it how you have taught us. I will update and let you know how I get one. Great lesson so easily explained going to look at a few more. Great teacher

Well I am a fairly experienced artist and I have just learnt how to do a stone wall successfully. I would do the stones individually not as just individual blocks but kind of blended together. I now did washes as you suggested and it is a great way to accomplish a natural wall. I am really pleased with the result. You are a great teacher too. Thanks

I'll have to try this method. I've been using a kind of scraping-technique with an old store card. I saw Terry Harrison using it in a video. It takes a bit of practice, but it results in random rock patterns - ideal for cliffs and sma rocks. But for stones it lack that roundness you mentioned, or maybe I'm not doing the technique properly...

Hi Mark. No teacher has the “right” way so you are doing the best thing ie Seeing what others can suggest and trying out their methods. You’ll probably find something that is “your” way which uses a few ideas. Good luck and keep experimenting.

Absolutely amazing!! I love it so much!.. There is any chance that you can reach the stones effect from Dale Laitienen sweetie??. I'm looking for that technique everywhere and I can't find any explanation.. :( Because seems to be wet into wet but I can't get that kind of transparency and vivid colors on the same time, its merges... Do you know what I mean?. There several shapes and layers but the final shapes are defined..

Very helpful, thank you. My watercolours are far too tight at the moment, it is difficult to break free after years of doing it that way !!
@thistleheartprints7880
@thistleheartprints7880 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t worry too much about being too tight. Painting style is very personal and perhaps it best suits you ,as an artist, to paint how you naturally want to paint. The pressure is always on to “loosen up” but not all artists benefit from that advice . Have belief in yourself - I’m sure you paint just fine. P x

@@thistleheartprints7880 How very kind of you to reply and your words meant a lot to me. You are right, I am always being told I "must"loosen up ! My favourite subjects to paint are architecture & portraits. I love doing the detail and so loosening up is hard to do - as you might appreciate ! I have however learnt to soften the edges and not to completely fill the scene with detail now. Your tips on mixing stonework colours will come in very handy so thank you again & I look forward to seeing more of your watercolour work.
