Okay so I just stripped two of my wheels using polystrippa. I agree with what he says in the video - don't do it at home. It's not worth it at all. I had 3 layers of paint to get through so it was even worse for me. I'm definitely taking my other two wheels to a sandblaster, this experience was traumatic lmao

We use lots of chromate based paints and materials in the aircraft industry; I believe its a 'Hexochromate' and once it enters the body it can't be removed (much like asbestos). Its prolonged exposure i.e. years, that causes health problems.
@jackheinemann8780
@jackheinemann8780 Жыл бұрын
Hex chrome is dangerous, as far as im aware, industry has moved toward trivelent chrome nearly everywhere now which is much safer. Heavy metal exposure of all types is cumulative, however some metals are more dangerous than others.

It's a busy panel shop, the entire shop has cars all through it. No matter where I did it I would be near a car, I was just careful I didn't make a mess and get it all over the place. ok so I could have thrown a piece of plastic over it but didn't and it wasn't an issue.

I've found dulux metal primers you buy from bunnings to be absolutely excellent on aluminium. I've painted multiple cast aluminium mowers with the stuff, the paint has etched into the aluminium so hard its only come off from mechanical wear.

You nailed it on the spot when you started talking about getting lost when painting them. When spraying clear I still have trouble with dry spray in some spots. I try and wet out the wheel, but it's such a fine line before it starts to run. I turned down my PSI to about 15 and cut the fluid nozzle down about half way and it seems to help. Any other suggestions to help this problem? Thanks.

Nice ! Does applying an epoxy primer directly to blasted bare aluminum wheels, then applying chemically (1h30min later) a catalysed primer be best or self etch + catalyzed primer ?

I have a similar type stripper , it works the same way when tested , its uncolored thick gel , is there a liquid such as thinners or alcohol that wont weaken the strength too much but liquefy it slightly ? I know they make it as a gel as to stick to walls and not run down ... The wheels are old school 3 piece Rays Volk mesh and its really hard to get the gel to flow down into the more intricate bits of the wheel design. So a more liquid type deal will work best... Thanks man !!!

I’m curious if anybody has ever given you the tip of plastic bagging each wheel as you put a good heavy coat of gel stripper on them, give them a good half a day in that bag out of the sun then pull them out hit them with the power washer and do it again. You don’t have to get your hands all up in that crap. And using the plastic bag keeps the paint stripper from evaporating therefore “a lot more action out of your stripper per application!”

Great tutorial. I'm wanting to paint my wheels but just wondering do I have to take the clear lacquer off. It's just the curbing on the edge that bothers me. Could I sand and fill then just primer and paint that area and blend a clear into the rest? what sort of paint? prefer not to use 2k at home. Thank you

Hi mate, I was inspired to touch up the gutter rash on my rims, and I've blended out the scratches and filled with bog. I picked up some primer, silver and clear... but in my rush at the store I managed to pick up Enamel based paint (pressure packs). Now, I've had issues with enamel paints in the past (like it taking over a week to cure, and that's in the NT with heat lamps), so I'm a bit concerned about using enamels again. But seeing as its only a small edge touch up, is there any advice you can give me regarding the use of enamels? Like; * How can I decrease the drying time? * What sort of time should I leave between coats (primer, silver, clear) * Should I just shit-can it altogether and find some acrylics Cheers. Great videos as usual.

Was there much damage to the wheels (from gutter damage or such)? is so, how did you go about repairing? Also, I've been reading about powder coating, do you prefer paint over powder ? Nice looking wheels btw :)
@TheGunmanChannel
@TheGunmanChannel 9 жыл бұрын
Yes mate I prefer paint to powder because I think they have a much higher quality finish. There was a little gutter rash but I just sanded it out with 120 then 240 then primed, if it had very deep scratches then I'd use a little body filler then prime.

Before I repaint them I wanna sand them a bit first to remove the contaminated clear from the sand. What do you recommend ?

Well, now i know why it's so hard for me to strip my Prius rims - i'm using a brush and not a hand to apply paint stripper. Oh well, 1 wheel done 3 more to go and a lot of sanding. Also i live in an apartment and it's 5-10deg C outside, so yeah, got to think my process out a whole lot.
@GS-xp5jq
@GS-xp5jq 4 жыл бұрын
What are the odds of that. I'm also trying to paint strip my Prius wheels and am having a lot of trouble too. Are you wheels the 15 inch 2nd gen Prius wheels? Aka the magnesium 6 spoke wheels that Toyota put on for fuel economy due to their light weight on the 2004 to 2009 Prius. I wonder if it has anything to do with the magnesium construction. Traditionally most manufacturers stopped making magnesium wheels in the 80s because the paint peels easily, maybe Toyota used a strong paint to make up for that?
@eivis13
@eivis13 4 жыл бұрын
@@GS-xp5jq Nope, i have the newer 10 spoke in a patter of 5 pairs 15inch ones(i think they came on the 3rd gen prius). The offset, CB and other numbers seem to be the same as the gen 2 15inch wheels so they should fit. Also i'm doing this for winter wheels that i got for fairly cheap (100eur - 4 wheels with 7-7.5mm tire tread, but i think the rubber will be fairly stiff when the cold hits) and they are badly corroded so the wheels were already missing/about to be missing 25-30% of the paint. Anyway gonna be doing the original 16inchers sometime in the winter or spring, because mine look bad without the hub caps(also corrosion). Any idea if they're magnesium or something other than an aluminum alloy?

The Gunman They have three diff models. I picked up the 16587 that uses the pressurized cup so that I could use 1.8 or 2.0mm tips for thick poly primer or even undercoating. The bad thing about them is that you have to get their PPS cups but they are easy to find. They make a 1.4mm gun/tip gun also that would be good for sealer or base. Guys tell me if they quick clean the plastic heads they can get 10 or more uses. I am only a hobbyist so take my recommendations with a grain of salt!

Read and understand the risks with using that shit, there's reason it's illigal in nearly every other country. Pay someone else to strip them, its worth it

Wouldn't it be better to polyurethane over the epoxy rather going with automotive coatings?

This was a Polyurethane automotive coating.

The Gunman Isn't the automotive polyurethane compatible with epoxy primer? Or it really requires the gray primer you applied over the epoxy? I work mainly with aircraft coatings and usually I polyurethane over the epoxy (both from same manufacturer of corse)

JoAspirin I made this vid a while ago now but from memory I only used a 1k etch primer first then 2k poly high build primer surfacer (automotive). then the 2k white poly.

The Gunman ohhhh my bad. I thought I heard epoxy primer instead of etch primer. Now it all makes sense. My apologies for the confusion :)

JoAspirin From memory I did mention epoxy but may have just said it would be a good option for better adhesion and corrosion protection. As I say it was over 2 years ago since I made this vid so my memory has faded a bit. Thanks for watching mate and happy new year.

I ask because I was wondering how to paint tires. Is there a trick? Also how long does it last? I have a 4x4 Chevy Blazer I am looking to do a Tonka build and would love to have large mud tires with Tonka Tuff in yellow painted on them.

Wayne Woodley I just used solvent basecoat, it'll never last forever but really isn't a big job to redo every now and then. Thanks for watching and glad you like the vids.

Next time water blast the stripper off. Water neutralizes the stripper and it cleans the rim

I find the cure for fixing the problem if you get the stripper on your skin is to put vinegar on the area, it's an instant fix !!

Water also neutralises the acid, I'm yet to use vinegar but thanks for the tip.

You’ve either got brass nuts, or you’re nuts for slopping industrial paint stripper on those wheels just a couple feet away from that white car…😳
