How to paint the Deathleaper for Tyranids in

Thanks to @officialwarhammer I got my hands on all the new goodies for Tyranids and I immediately jumped on the Deathleaper as it's my favourite Tyranid design yet. It's actually way easier to paint than I expected too! I used my own custom scheme for this but you can easily follow the same steps and apply the the other schemes I have tutorials for already! I've put out 8 Tyranid schemes now, 7 on my channel, and 1 on Patreon, including this, my custom Hive Fleet Morrigan!

Primers:
Chaos Black
Grey Seer (lighter coat)
FAQ:Adding a light spray of Grey Seer over a full coat of black primer adds a small amount of texture to the primer which gives the contrast paint more to grip on to. It also adds light and shadows which helps define the model more.

Honestly, more excited for the Lictors and deathleaper than I am the norn emmissary. Been holding off on picking up some of these for years now waiting for GW to release better sculpts. Glad I did because these look beautiful.

I think the white - snow - of the base really compliments the mini. You got a good thing going there and all the parts come together really well. The skin is amazing for the simplicity of it. Infiltration army... You need to do more about this especially as it's in the Dex and I'll be interested to see where this goes when you can discuss it more. Kinda wish they'd done the Guard with the Marines and the Nids as I feel you need Guard there as well to fight off a Tyranid Invasion. Well you do. Could have done Genestealer Cults as well and themed the initial releases around invasions and unrest in neighbouring systems.

Our Hivefleet colors are reaaallllly similar. I leaned into cool tones for shading instead of warm ones. But looks great - Deathleaper is so much fun to paint.

So glad to see how excited you where to do this mini, with all the minis you paint for us your always enthusiastic which is so cool, but it’s nice to know that you do some almost for yourself too 🙂. And it is an amazing mini and another cracking video, I also really love the lictors so looking forward to seeing them and the biovores really love what they have done with those sculpts. As for his cloak I’m thinking it’s a stealth thing so we know lictors have chameleonic properties to their skin from the lore, well….. death leapers “tail cloak” might work like Frodo and Sam’s eleven cloaks when he squats into a space he pulls his body small into it and then it chameleons in to break his outline and further hide him maybe. I do have one question on this one please Andy, I know you use series D dry brushes (at least I think I’ve seen you use them and talk about them🤔) my question is on this scheme you don’t use them instead favouring a flat dry brush so just wondering if there is a reason that the flat one works better on this scheme?

Honestly I use the series D brushes a lot when I’m doing the stippling technique. For regular drybrushing I grab cheap gw brushes so I don’t add extra wear and tear to my nice once but you could just as easily use the series D. Glad you liked the video and I ye stray cape makes a lot of sence when I’ll put it like that.

Amazing and detailed showcase, and super easy to follow. Thanks! I am new to the painting thing, and I'm still debating between just trying for leviathan colours or doing my own; though the more I watch people do this, the more I want to attempt something for myself. Figuring out all the colours to use will take a while though... so I guess the Deathleaper (which happens to be my new favourite model, too!) will have to wait a while even after it gets delivered. Current idea is to go for a pale bony scheme on the hardened skin, unsure about the fleshy bits, and then claws and carapace being black fading to dark blue and highlighted in bright turquoise (think your typical necromancer-ish colourscheme; Hivefleet would be "Hive Fleet Hecate" after the greek titan/goddess of Witchcraft and Necromancy. Lore is that they use a lot of the more unqiue bioforms that keep their experiences even through death, so Swarmlord, Old One-Eye, and I'd figure Deathleaper would probably also work that way). Hope I'll manage to make it look half as good as your scheme by the time I make it to the Deathleaper. Cheers!

It looks amazing! Its just an amazing looking kit with a fantastic paint scheme. If I hadn't already painted a ton of nids I'd probably copy this scheme too. Rrally lookin forward to getting some of the new stuff. Don't mind admitting I'm a little jealous of you right now. 😂

Do u use the contrast and shade right out of the pot or thin it down? Also when doing the skin how long do u wait after applying the contrast do u then apply the shade? Loving ur scheme and how easy it looks to paint! Looking forward to fielding an army of tyranids using ur technique!

Pretty much straight from pot. I do use a pallet but no thinning. And you need about 15 minutes for it to be dry before shade. You can usually tell. And yes jump on board the scheme pal.

The wraithbone will be brighter undercoat but it shouldn’t make too much difference, you can always test it on something first if you’re not sure

I would strongly disagree there. The nerolictor is by far my least favourite of the new kits. I hate it. But that’s what makes the hobby great. We all like different things so all out armies can be different and unique.

I will definitely be voting for Death Leaper as Miniature of the Year. But at the same time, I believe that the new biovore is a complete failure. This is against the Tyranid design concept: scythe talons for combat, not walking. And the whole model looks like a newbie conversion from residual bits!

Have to disagree there I’ve built the new biovore and he is epic looking. I need three more to make a proper squad and I will be happy. I suggest you wait till you see it on person before giving your final verdict.
