one question, how do you get this marks for each part of the test? I mean the maximum you can get in the use of English part and reading altogether is 78 points, so how come you've got 203 on the reading and 210 on the use of English ??? thanks for your help.
@JuliasEnglishNotes
@JuliasEnglishNotes 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure where you got information about 78 points. The maximum score you can get for each part is 210 points. You can check it on the official website: www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-tests/advanced/results/ This system hasn't been changed yet. :) Maybe you are confusing the number of questions with the number of points? But the Reading part and Use of English were merged and there is one common part now - Reading and Use of English. It contains 56 questions. It's the new format which was introduced in 2015.

@@spirox47 Hello, in the end I didn't take it in June but I took it in September. And yes, I passed with the overall score of 193. I somehow managed to get 210 from the Listening part. My Reading was the lowest (172), but I knew it will be the worst part... reading is not my cup of tea. The rest wasn't bad. Use of English - 196, Writing - 193, Speaking - 196. I have to say that it was the easiest thing I have ever taken. After aaaaall those mock test and preparation, this was easy peasy.

I'm fortunate enough to have come across this video just in time. I literally have 2 years prior to sitting the exam (I'll need it as a proof that my English level is advanced by the time I graduate from college) I'm already at a level that I can watch tv series,movies without subtitles (both american and British English) and understand over 80% of them , of course I do sometimes need to rewind because of slurred words or too fast-paced conversations but like 90% of the times I understand everything after the second time listening. When it comes to reading I've just picked up the habit of reading but I still find reading a bit overwhelming but I'm still at it. For now , I'm improving my overall English level and getting used to a wide variety of accents 😅. I guess 2 years is more than enough time for preparation but Cambridge exams are not to be underestimated, so I'm not taking the chance of getting a low grade. By the way , when did you know your English level was high enough to sit the exam?
@JuliasEnglishNotes
@JuliasEnglishNotes 3 жыл бұрын
Hi) Thank you for your story. Yes, you're right, 2 years is enough, and as I can judge by your message, your English is fantastic, but you definitely should continue working hard just because CAE might be tricky)) I had to take my first CAE tasks (not the whole exam, but separate parts and tasks from it) while I was doing my master's, and that's how I got interested in the exam. So I had started doing sample CAE tests long before my level was sufficient, and it was a nightmare to deal with them. I knew that I was ready for the exam when I started feeling comfortable while doing sample tests, even if they were pretty hard. It wasn't stressful anymore and the number of the correct answers was usually more than 85%. That's when I realized that my level was finally Advanced))

Damn. I took the exam a month ago. Didn't really prepare as I didn't know there were grades so I didn't really give a damn but wow your scores are amazing. I got 200 average score barely grade A. Took the exam cuz I love english, but my question is is it worth it taking the CPE and aim for at least a C or just be happy with a c2 cae. My peers keep tellin me my english is nothin but american street trash and that I got lucky they gave me max points in speaking prolly cuz of my accent. IF the cpe exam is worth taking, is it significantly harder than the cae or not. cuz cae was really not that bad, if a guy like me can pass without preparing, but I don't wanna waste 250 euros trying to pass only to get smashed
@JuliasEnglishNotes
@JuliasEnglishNotes 5 жыл бұрын
Do you have a reason to take CPE? Do you need it for something? I can't say whether CPE is much harder than CAE. You can check sample tests just to see if you can manage it: www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-tests/proficiency/preparation/ Also note that grade C is given if you score 200-212 on CPE, which is actually grade A when you take CAE. You can check the relationship between the grades and levels here: www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-tests/proficiency/results/

I'm taking the exam this december and I've been preparing on my own (and for too long) I'm doing fine on reading use of english and listening (I usually get around 75-80% right which gives me confidence) but don't know how good I'll be doing at writing and speaking since there's noone to correct me, are these easy enough to pass them even if not with a really high mark?
@JuliasEnglishNotes
@JuliasEnglishNotes 4 жыл бұрын
I think that the Writing part is easier because you can prepare it beforehand. I mean, you can create one pattern, use the same opening phrases, structures and so on and just change the ideas in your piece of writing. You can practice all the formats this way (essay, letter, etc.). Speaking was the most difficult part for me. I didn't practice it and I improvised during the exam. The result was not that great, but still good. So I can say that it's pretty feasible. Good luck to you! :)

Hello! I prepared 2,5 months and spent about 2-3 hours a day to study. I decided that it was my number one priority and I dedicated all of my free time to the exam. I studied grammar, vocabulary and did practice tests every day (not the whole test but at least 1 section of it per day). And then I dedicated several days to take the whole test at once and check how well I was dealing with it. I think that 3 months is enough to prepare for this exam if you don't waste your time and use it wisely ;) Good luck with your studies! :)

I'll be taking the CAE at the beginning of next year and I'm so afraid. My anxiety has been tormenting me and I've started to meditate more often than usual. I've never taken any other English exam in my life so I really don't know what to expect. My biggest fears are the writing and reading part and use of English. I forget everything as soon as I read a text and when I finally need to answer one of the exercises I need to go all the way back to the text. Edit (19/08/2022): I did it!! I passed with grade A!
@JuliasEnglishNotes
@JuliasEnglishNotes 2 жыл бұрын
It was the same for me. This strategy with reading the whole text and then answering the questions didn't work for me. So I chose a different one. I read the first question, then I read the first paragraph looking for the answer right away. The questions and paragraphs usually correlate or at least they are set in the chronological order, so the answer to the first question is usually at the beginning of the test, in the first or second paragraph. Anyway, the answer to the second question cannot appear before the first one. There's usually a strict order. This strategy worked for me much better. You can try it too or find your own one. As for writing, for me it was the easiest part because I prepared a sample piece of writing for each genre, so I changed the ideas during the test but used the same structure and opening and closing phrases. I also read and tried to memorise several sample pieces. It helped to understand the logic of how it all should be organised and what will be expected from me. And Use of English takes a lot of practice. There are no special techniques. You just need to learn the grammar and do a lot of practice tests.

I know this question is not related with the video but can you give me an opinion on my exam results? I got an A overall at the Advanced level. My results were all over the place: Reading: 204/210 (A); Use of English: 210/210 (A); Writing: 180/210 (C); Listening 196/210 (B); Speaking: 210/210 (A) I got bare minimum to pass in Writing which makes me feel gutted because I got nearly perfect scores during the whole year at Cambridge School and only colleagues of mine with C overall got the same grade as me. I remember using some good advanced vocabulary, inversions, conditionals and other advanced elements. Do you think it's worth asking for a remark? I don't they it will be lowered, because the writing mark is so low already, bur remarks are always risky.
@JuliasEnglishNotes
@JuliasEnglishNotes 5 жыл бұрын
Well, I don't see a reason to feel bad about your results. Exams are tricky and sometimes you can perform better doing practice tests rather than the exam itself. It's totally fine. You got the highest grade, and your English is amazing. Even if the result of the remark is positive and you get a bigger Writing score after it, your grade will not be higher than A)) Of course, it's your decision, and if you feel that your Writing part was good, you can try to ask for a remark. Use of English tests your grammar so you should work on that. Check the book Cambridge Grammar for CAE and CPE. It contains all the necessary grammar rules together with exercises and practice tests. I can also recommend Advanced Grammar in Use. It will improve your grammar in general. Good luck!

Well, that's really tough and I had problems with this too. I would recommend doing more listening tests then and especially the task you have trouble with. I did it this way: 1. listened to the text and chose the answers; 2. checked the answers; 3. read the text carefully and tried to analyze my mstakes; 3. listened to the text once more. It helped)

Hi) It depends on your current level and how much time you are ready to spend on your studies. If you are hard-working and dedicated, you'll have a great chance to get a high grade. Have you tried to do practice tests? What's your usual score?

Well, I took the exam in November 2018, it was totally fine. They took our phones away, though, cause you can't have any electronic items, including smart watches. They send an email with the rules prior to the exam, and there is a list of the things which are prohibited. So you will know for sure :)
