I believe last question in B1 section could be either A or D depending on the context. If the reporting happens on the same day, you could say "He said he has to work tomorrow" since 'tomorrow' hasn't arrived yet. If the reporting happens farther in to the future, you would have to say 'He said he had to work the following day'.

Yeah. I chose c for question 2 of the B1 test, because “”Have you been to Paris?’ ‘I have never been to Paris’” is pretty redundant and just sounds weird to say. You could just say no. It makes more sense to say you haven’t put been to Paris if you’re being asked how long you’ve been to Paris. You can’t just say “No.” so you clarify that you’ve never been there.
@the_demon149

For the question after that, any of the answers seem right (Except c). It depends on when you’re reporting. Or maybe British English is slightly different from American English, and that’s what the problem is? Still doesn’t make much sense.

As a native English speaker from America, I had absolutely no idea what a clause was, haha. I don't think we specifically learned about them, so it makes learning other languages quite hard since all these basic grammar terms weren't necessarily taught to everyone, so I really do start from ground zero.

It's okay. No matter the country or language, this is not how you learn to speak as a child growing up. We just feel what's right and what isn't. People trying to learn languages with these grammatical terms often get stuck in a web of rules rather than just emerging themselves in the culture.

I'm a native English speaker from the United States. I got every question right except for B1 - Question 3. I chose "a," but I would argue that the answer for B1 - Question 3 could be either "a" or "d," depending on the situation. For example, if on December 14, 2022, a friend says, "I have to work tomorrow," and I report this to another friend that same day, I would use "a. He said he has to work tomorrow." Now, if on December 14, 2022, a friend says, "I have to work tomorrow," and I report this to another friend two days later, on December 16, 2022, I would use "d. He said had to work the following day." If I'm wrong in my thinking, feel free to correct me and explain why I'm wrong.
@rg1809
@rg1809 Жыл бұрын
American here as well, and I too find d the wrong answer. It is ambiguous. A is exact, he has to work tomorrow (future). "The next day" could be the day after any day next week. I suspect the question has to do with has vs had, but then, had is in the past.
@ShinkuRey
@ShinkuRey Жыл бұрын
@@rg1809 Due to us not knowing the time or day "tomorrow" was used (the listed sentence could have been used in quotes), we have to use "The next day" or "The following day".

I was going to agree with you, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that neither answer is actually correct. What he actually said, and I quote, was "I have to work tomorrow". He may have implied either a or d, but what he said was what I quoted.
@someone878
@someone878 Жыл бұрын
D is the correct answer because it's indirect speech, isn't it? Let's say "I have to work tomorrow" is direct speech, maybe something a friend told me a few minutes before. If I wanna tell my sister what my friend told me, I can use indirect speech without directly quoting him. To form the indirect speech you need the past tense of the verb that was used (in this case have --> had). So saying "He said he had to work the following day" is the correct answer. BUT I'm not 100% sure if that's the right answer. I'm not a native speaker so maybe what I wrote is crap 🥲 But it's the same in German so that would make sense I guess.

I'm Dutch, and I got everything correct, except for level B1 question 3. I said "a", and it should be "d". I was in doubt, between "tomorrow" and "the following day", but it's not about that at all. It's about the form of having, it's in the past tense, of course. He said he HAD to work the following day. I'm still proud of myself.
@loganbissett1392

I'm a native English speaker watching this video out of curiosity and I checked that question and I picked "a" because that's how I would've said it in real life. In fact, it would sound very unnatural to me to say it the "proper way" but maybe that's because I'm from Texas and "we don't talk good" lol. But rest assured that your answer would be understood exactly the same as the correct answer in conversation by every English speaker. So don't feel discouraged about missing that question because in real life no one would even notice it's not the "proper" way to say it.

@@_hltn I get that but the reality is that most likely the only context in which you’ll have to report that sentence in real life is one in which answer “a” would make perfect sense and sound more natural. I genuinely can’t think of a single time I’ve been in a situation where I needed to report this sentence where answer “a” would be confusing due to chronological reasons. Of course that would change assuming the context of the conversation was that it happened weeks ago, but that scenario is astronomically less common than the first one. Overall I think it’s a poorly thought out question that doesn’t factor in how rare the context is for the correct answer to be relevant and necessary, and missing it definitely does not mean you’re still at B1 level.

This is a common thing for all language tests. B levels require great grammar knowledge whilst C levels require a rich vocabulary, idioms and general language comprehension. This is why it is better to skip B2 if you do not plan to be a linguist because most native speakers would have some trouble getting 100% in such test and it is not that useful.

I got B2 as the result of the test and I’m a 12 year old Brazilian girl. I started learning it when I was 10 through internet: I listened to music with the lyrics and watched KZfaq normally but in English. I understand 90% when I listen to a conversation in English! What motivated me was my English cousins because I wanted to understand them. Now I do! I really want to learn a third language: maybe German, Russian, or French… who knows. Anyways, thanks for this test, Lucy. Edit: Now I'm 13, and I've chosen to learn German (such a unique language!). I aim to become a polyglot when I'm older. I’m currently focusing on improving my German and, also, my English, with the goal of reaching C1 in it. Update: Now I’m almost 14, took the EF SET test and got C1. I started to learn Russian and I sometimes watch YT videos in Spanish (Mexico). Well, I’m enjoying it. I wanna see how much Russian I can learn in 2024.

Good on ya. Once you get to that level, just keep exposing yourself to the language as much as possible. Learning a second language this early gives you even the chance of learning it to a level you could sound native. The brain and hearing system "locks in" later in life to a particular accent/language and it becomes harder to even hear when you make small mistakes with phonemes...

I think for us non-native speakers, grammar is something we have been learning in school ever since, but speaking of how to use the right word, phrasal verb, idiom, slang, and collocation in the context, that makes things really tough and becomes a nightmare for some of us, and it demands that we go beyond the courses and dive into the culture of the language and so much more. Do I say I have a C1 level because I had most of the responses? Absolutely not, because for non-native speakers, grammar is our comfort zone, and that holds us back from the journey of fluency. So I need to look into my weaknesses and turn them into strengths. I appreciated this marvellous challenge. Thank you so much

4:33 I would actually debate, that A is also a correct answer. Because it sounds more natural than D. Of course D is also correct, but in a scenario where Person A says "I have to work tomorrow" and Person B, somewhere in the background shouts "What did he say?" I would respond with "He said, he has to work tomorrow". While A is more natural, D is more of a "written" way to say it...something that you would see more in textbooks or narratives.

Dear Lucy: I’m teacher Leo and I’m leaving my regards here from up here Brazil! ❤ I’m really fond of the British accent, not to mention the English language itself! Plus, I’ve been really well on this one; just one mistake which I ended up coming across a few misunderstandings, but that’s no biggie, right? ☺️ Thanks for sharing this amazing test with us, and also teaching us the right way of using the language as well!

As someone who speaks English as a second language, I'm proud of myself to be at C2 level. 💃🏻 I learned by attending English courses, studying it at school, using it in conversations with others, and watching movies. But for real, what helped most was using it in conversations. Practice makes perfect, I guess.

Same here. Sure, I was taught some at school, but the quality of those lessons were rather... disappointing. Once I actually started using English so often I used it more than my native tongue, it improved much faster. I didn't expect to be able to answer all questions correctly, though. I'll try the actual questionnaire as well

I'm a swede and got C2, because I do know the _swedish_ grammar terms and was able to guess them here. But it really was half-guessing, just assuming that if something is in "third conditional" it's gonna be the "most obscure one" for example, I couldn't say exactly what those mean if it wasn't multiple choice
@TheWanderstar
@TheWanderstar Жыл бұрын
@@metallsnubben Somewhat of the same case for me, I literally used logic to guess that 'conditional'= 'a condition' and that conditions involve "if"s and "else"s, which allowed me to answer the question.

I'm a native english speaker (born and raised in Ireland) its the only language I have ever spoken, and I still got a couple questions wrong! But it's kind of fascinating that the language is so vast, even being entrenched in it for 27 years isn't enough to have learned everything. I feel it's definitely one of those languages you have to go out of your way to learn in its entirety.
@perl4396
@perl4396 4 ай бұрын
Not really, it’s plain and simple, there’s strict order of words, loads of books for learners. For example, Russian language has no strict order of words, so it could get really bad and confusing to foreigners, also each rule has like a thousand exceptions to it, I guess there’s really no point in making up the rules if you don’t break em😂😂😂 Take a look at mandarin, these damn fools don’t even have letters in the language With that being said, English is one of the easiest languages to learn, maybe not master, but you easily could get like b2 or c1, which is enough to speak and understand
@persiebun
@persiebun 4 ай бұрын
@perl4396 I never said it was the hardest language ever, just that it was more complex than most native speakers realise. I'm reminded now why I rarely leave KZfaq comments, someone will always feel a need to argue with you even when making the simplest of statements 😬

I'm French Canadian, from Québec city, went to French school up until college. We had English as a second language classes from 5th grade on. I went to an English college for two years because I was really good at English in a French school but I quickly realized I was not that good compared to the students who had studied in English all their lives. I moved to Ottawa to improve my English while studying in French at Ottawa University. My spoken English is probably better than my written English. I make a lot of punctuation mistakes and other grammar mistakes because I write my essays in English with a French flow syntax.

Native speaker here. If somebody said to me "I have to work tomorrow", and I was asked what was said I would respond "He said he has to work tomorrow", answer (a). I would definitely not say (d) "He said he had to work the following day." unless we know for a fact we're being asked this several days later, after it was said to us. That would be a weird complicated thing to assume for no reason. Or is "report this sentence" some sort of language school jargon that means that, specifically?

My girl friend brought her 10-year-old daughter (not previously exposed to English) over from Argentina to Los Angeles, California at the beginning of the fall semester. The child was then enrolled in an age-appropriate grade level with mixed Spanish and English speaking children, and by the end of the semester was speaking English without a Spanish accent. Being smart, young and heavily influenced by wanting to "fit in", all contributed to her rapid progress. As a 70 year old male, I can imitate accents fairly well, but learning to use a foreign language's grammar correctly at speed would be very difficult. My girl friend from Argentina is an ace at English grammar, but murders English pronunciation.
