Thank you for putting this up, you've explained and demonstrated it in such a good way, even a non handy man like me can now fix the vent holes :) You've saved me headaches and money!

Awesome video. Your excellent description is much appreciated. Needed to fill the oversized hole from a heater type ceiling fan combo unit which left an oversized hole. Thanks again.

Back blocking takes a bit more time and I thought that plaster needs to be completely dry prior to painting. I prefer back blocking; it creates a strong join with a flush finish. You can feather out when using tape but there could be a chance that the joint could show a slight crack in time. Thanks for your feed back. You seem like a great painter that can do some minor plaster reapirs. Some painters I know just want to roll on paint even without preping!! Keep up the good work

The web site was primarily for plaster repairs. You can get a lot of info and instructions on how to install and stop up joints for plasterboard to new rooms from your supplier. I've seen some good videos on you tube also. Maybe one day I might do that. Yours is the first request! Regards Nerio Plaster Repair Tips

on a fairly hot day the quick setting stuff i use dries in about 45 minutes even after 3 coats of plaster, it doesnt shrink much at all. I wouldnt be painting top coat that quick. I did a big tape join today and 3 coats on top but weather didnt permit me to finish I'll definately be giving this back blocking a go though i've heard the term all over the place and never really understood what it was. I've seen them when i poke my head up in the ceilings but but not known much about them.

thanks buddy just did a 14 by 12 inch hole in my ceiling back blocked used gyprock multi purpose joint compound about 4 coats great finish only problem was adhearing the back block to ceiling used liquid nails and also on finishing block thanks again for some reason my cornice adheasive did not bond .any way back blocking from now on no tape thanks again
@plasterrepairtips9 жыл бұрын
Hi Manny and thanks for your comment. I only use cornice cement to glue back blocks. Make sure you clean off dust and give the cornice cement about two hours before you fill the area with new plasterboard again using cornice cement . I use cornice cement for everything. I would not use liquid nails and my videos don't say to use it, only cornice cement. If the job you did fails simply start over and do as per the videos... you can't go wrong! Cheers

Nerio, WOuld love to see more have you every thought about doing an instructional video for installation of new plasterboard to a room?

Wow this is great. I'm a journeyman painter and have been using California patches with sheetrock cut exposing face paper to avoid using wood backing. But on larger patches it is not so secure so I'd opt for the backing method. This method would work great I'm sure. My only concern is cracking, as long as your using plaster of paris it won't crack? Do you ever use hot mud like pro set 20/45/90? Obviously you do this day in and out and have a chance to go back and see your work, so this does not crack without tape? Can't wait to try it out!
@plasterrepairtips10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment dome204. I use cornice cement which is a plaster that has strong adhesive properties and is suitable to glue plaster board perfectly. I'm not sure about straight "plaster of paris" or what you are using. Look for the product I use or equivalent and the joins (done Properly) won't crack Cheers

Hi, thanks for the video. Couple of questions. 1. Does the backblocking block have to be plasterboard? I've got a garage full of old timber, can I use that for the backblock and gyprock for the front? And 2. On some of the holes I need to fix the timber framework is right on the edge of the hole on at least one side. Does that stop me using this method? Is there another method I must use in this situation? Thanks

Stud Adhesive can be used on timbr backblocking which will make it more strong?

Really digging the videos. I wanted to ask do you use the same back block method on regular butt joints when hanging walls and ceilings? I was thinking about trying it for an upcoming job. Nice work
@plasterrepairtips10 жыл бұрын
Yes I do. Very good question Glenn. It's a good idea to back block all butt joints and sheets. The reason why I didn't mention it on the videos is that its for plaster repair jobs/tips. Thanks !!
@glennmcd623910 жыл бұрын
So a back blocked butt joint is made in between studs rather than nailing them both to one stud?
@plasterrepairtips10 жыл бұрын
Glenn McD Yes that exactly correct!!

Wow I never knew that. That's great advice mate.

i don't have cornice cement, but I do have green gyprock adhesive..can i use that?? I have to fill a couple holes about half that size made by angry tenants at my place. They attempted to repair the holes using those cloth patch kits from bunnings, and then painted over the top without sanding...their patches stick out proud about 3mm horrendous..

Great videos, really informative. I just wanted to know how can I use this back blocking method to patch a round hole. I have some down lights to patch (small holes) and a vent to patch (large hole) all are perfect circles. How do I back block them? Thanks in advance, your videos and techniques are simple and easy to follow. Thanks 👌🏻

Hi Michael, simply cut to round holes into a square. What I do is make a square template out of cardboard or plaster sheet at the diameter of the downlight hole, martk them out to all the holes, cut out so they are square, back block as per video and so on as per videos. Hope that has helped...cheers

I have a solid brick home and my cornice is starting to come away from the wall due to a bit of movement in my home. I want to have a go at replacing it after watching your great vids 👍. Will cornice adhesive stick to my old painted walls and ceilings? Any tips for me after removing my old cornice, before installing new cornice? 90mm cove 👌🏻

Hi Michael, simply use the coping saw and cut the round holes into a square one. I make a square template say the diameter of the round hole using plasterboard or cardboard then follow the videos to back block. If you have too small a hole simple make the square cut bigger. Hope this helps and thank you for your comment. Cheers

why do you guys (plasterers) come back in a few days? im a painter i do ceiling repairs like this etc. all the time but i use quick setting stuff either 5 or 15 minute, and i can usually sand in a few hours. Thats interesting what you said about the not having to tape i do the timber method you mention and tape every time.
@WesTpaintninjagc9 жыл бұрын
I think what im going to do in future, is a hybrid of your way and my way haha screw timber behind the back blocks to be safe, lose the tape, and have the flush joint.
@plasterrepairtips9 жыл бұрын
Hi Wes and thanks for your comment.. that method is good too after the back blocks have been glued and wait to set. That way you can apply a lot of pressure when glueing the plaster of the hole size. I generally think it's just more work involved and a little overkill. Just give the back blocks time to set ( 1 to 2 hours or longer is best). But there's nothing wrong with your method, well done!! regards

First guy I've seen that knows what it's about, building up due to using mess tape and paper tape is for armatures, just quietly, plastering is about keeping things flush, level if you can help it., goodness me ? : )
