How to Peel a Mango - The Top 2 Best Ways

Peeling a mango can be an annoying or difficult task but with these 2 techniques you can peel the softest or hardest mangos out there.
The first technique is to cut the mango into 3 chunks then score the mango both direction and flip it inside out leaving you with easy to eat mango chunks.
The second technique is to peel a square grip point around your thumb so you can peel the rest of the mango with easy grip. Once you've peeled the rest of the mango you can hold the top and slowly peel away the grip points. After the mango is completely peeled you can chop it into chunks and eat it or make something like mango salsa or other recipes. This is the better technique to use if you want to maximize the full amount of mango removed from the peel and if you want to use it in recipes.

While we wait for mine to ripen, read a true short story............ A COBRA IN MY HOUSE When living just outside Selma, Alabama in 1965 . I was 14. My father had married a waitress named Maude. She was a homely looking woman resembling a man more than a woman or maybe more like an ox. She was stout with a prominent mustache. We lived in an old but stable white house with an orchard in the back including a large lemon tree. Father still sold house insulation and would be gone for days or weeks at a time. Maude would always go with him along with her chihuahua dog. While they were away, I went to school by bus, came home, did my school work and busied myself sculpting clay into animals like cobras, elephants, dogs, gorilla head and the like. I then painted them with oil paint to look more real. But I found that the paint would never dry because of the oil in the clay. I also painted landscapes and drew caricatures of students at school which I sold for $5 each. Another pass time I had was watching TV and shooting the mice and much larger rats that ventured to find food in the house. I had a pump BB gun which did the job quite well. I could see the living room, dining room and the kitchen from my perch on the couch. So when one came sneaking in, it would stop for an instant next to a wall by the doorway, POW!! I got it. I disposed of it outside and then waited for the next. One night I decided to see what would happen if I placed my clay cobra in there. I placed it where most of the rats made a fast dash through the dining room. Then I waited. Sure nuff, a good sized rat came to the edge of the door, it looked around and made its fast dash across the room. Suddenly it ran right into the cobra. The rat leaped high in the air doing a somersault in the air as it came down and hit the floor. Its legs were moving so fast that it was sliding on the floor and it knocked the cobra over with it landing on the rat. It was on it’s back with legs running as fast as it can and squealing. Never knew a rat could squeal that loud. ……. Then silence. I went over to see the rat with paint all over it and the floor. I picked it up by the tail. It was very dead. I thought it died of fright. I threw it out with the others. I was pleased I had created an effective rat killer. So I repainted the cobra and set him up again. The next rat was frighten away by it in time. So, POW!! I got him. I killed three rats that night. When I went to bed I left the cobra in the same place just outside the kitchen door in the dinning room and went to bed, then fell fast asleep. Around 3 AM I was suddenly waken by a loud scream and a bang, bang, bang. Jumping up and running to the dinning room, I saw my stepmother standing on a chair screaming and my father with his 32 snub nose pistol pointing at my now destroyed cobra. I cannot forget the look on my dad’s face as he was bent over looking at the dead cobra, then turning his head to look at me, while still bent over with his mouth wide open. He was stuck between being mad at me because of the damage to the hardwood floor, the extreme fear, and the plain funniness of the situation. He finally started laughing while Maude was still standing in the chair now screaming at me. My father always scoffed at my art as a waste of time but still bragged to others when we had his friends over time to time. He told this story over and over while drinking with a friend at home. It was funny watching him re-enact it while somewhat drunk. I was afraid that he was going to shoot somebody during the act. By the way, I did get into trouble, but mostly because Maude wanted my art out of the house because it ’stunk’. The oil paint had linseed oil and turpentine in it. I wish I had Plaster of Paris back then. I also got into trouble when I sculpted a naked female,....................... that's another story.

I'm so glad to know that there is someone else in the world that thinks cilantro tastes like soap!! Every time I say that, I get confused looks and statements such as "How do you know what soap tastes like?"... Smh... To answer your question though, I don't find the flesh to have a pine tree taste, but it does take on more of the flavor of the seed to me. If that makes any sense. :-)

Nor ripe AT ALL. Mangoes are meant to be eaten when soft and sweet. Very juicey too. 🥭 supposed to be red on top, yellow in the middle and green on the bottom. You want as much as YELLOW as possible because that’s where it tastes the best. Very sweet and juicy and slurpable. 😋 Should’ve waited a little bit more. Maybe check it a couple hours. The seed hasn’t even been able to form either that’s another thing to be aware of. For it to be a real 🍉 🍎 🍌 fruit.

2nd method was terrible - you have a slippery mango and a sharp knife, which you clearly had difficulties with. first method is perfectly fine and can be done with little wastage, also you can use a spoon to scoop out the flesh from the cheeks when the mangos are actually ripe (which this mango is not).
@AllThisThen
@AllThisThen 6 жыл бұрын
Is there some elaborate augmented reality game being played where everyone posts videos of all the possible wrong ways to cut mangos? I've only seen *ONE* video ever where someone did it the right way. You take a sharp knife and cut along the seem. Then you remove the seed from both sides with a spoon. Then the skin with the spoon. Practically impossible to cut yourself. Gets all the flesh. Takes a minute if you're slow.
@EarthMonkey
@EarthMonkey 5 жыл бұрын

I really liked the spoon technique also. After cutting both sides off the seed I just scooped a side with a spoon then I cut it into 4 pieces. For the middle seed part I just quickly trimmed vertically on a cutting board then I just enjoyed eating around the seed by hand and mouth. As for the green mangoes I will just let them sit on the counter till they begin to ripen. Really Green ones are hard and not tasty and difficult to cut and not worth the time. I just tried a smoothie with the hard green one I eventually cut- and it didn't taste sweet and not smooth. I'd rather buy frozen mango than try to cut a rock hard green mango. I will see how long it takes for the green mango to ripen on the shelf. Also I wash and dry my mango before I begin the entire process and I wear disposable gloves so to keep my hands away from what people will eventually be consuming. My wife taught me to me be a lot more hygienic than I was before. I also live in Canada and always have- can't wait for it to warm up again.

Your “basic knife 101” is what making me cringe. It’s ironic your tip is to have a sharp knife when yours is dull that’s why you can’t cut when pushing down. It’s actually the correct way to preform most knife strokes like the chop or slice. You also shouldn’t cut by moving the knife back and forth, it’s not a saw. It’ll tear what you’re cutting making jagged cuts. If your gonna make cooking videos you might want to invest in a knife sharpener and learn a proper grip so you don’t cut yourself. Don’t want to be down several months when you cut yourself.
@EarthMonkey
@EarthMonkey 5 жыл бұрын
If you take a knife though and press it isn't your skin it won't cut, the sawing motion is what slices.

@@EarthMonkey Thank you for your reply. After reading my original comment, I'm rather embarrassed at its flippant tone and sincerely apologize if you, too, felt the same way. At the time I posted the comment I was trying to find a better way to prepare mangos for a fruit salad. It never occurred to me to use a veg peeler. I always used a paring knife and ended up with a lot of waste. Thank you for taking the time to make this video because you taught me a better way to prepare mangos.
