I really love how this chef always mentions some ways to avoid food waste ❤️ I used to work a part time in a hotel restaurant, and I was nearly traumatised by the amount of food they wasted every day 😅 so it really warms my heart that some kitchens might be different ✌️☺️ didn’t really get the hammer joke tho 😅😅

Look up Gallagher. He was a comedian from the 80s who used to smash different fruit & food during performances and get it all over the audience. I’m talking grapes, strawberries, watermelon, cakes, cantaloupe. It was AMAZING and he was a comedy genius. He passed away last year. RIP Gallagher!

When I saw the dragon fruit, I was surprised. I know some people like to cut it like that, but I grew up just cutting it in half, then scooping the flesh out to eat, while using the peel as a bowl, at least, that's what my grandma did P.s, I still stay true to this method, since in my opinion, you waste even less of the fruit, since they are very expensive, though they are much sweeter and cheaper in Chinatowns.

A chef would know how to avoid food waste. But in restaurants their main goal is to produce a dish, not prevent food waste. No restaurant would sell candied watermelon rinds.

important note about the prickly pear, the one he sliced in this video already had the spikes removed, if you find one growing you need to remove them yourself (you can find methods online) and DO NOT touch it before you have, even if it doesn't look like there are spikes where you're grabbing there are incredibly small ones covering the entire thing in addition to the big ones that you can see, use tongs instead if you find one in a store it probably has the spikes removed already
@bladenot-runner1795
@bladenot-runner1795 3 ай бұрын
I found this out the hard way the first time I harvested them. My favorite method so far has been to harvest them with tongs, burn off the quills, then wash, peel, scoop out the seeds, and eat. It's a hassle, but the store-bought ones taste terrible in comparison, lol.

His gooseberry is actually a physalis, also known as a groundcherry or a cape gooseberry. I had to look it up when he said it was a gooseberry and it looked nothing like the green berries my grandparents grew, which are also called gooseberries (from the ribes plant family).

This is so helpful, but I can’t overstate how much simpler it is to cut a lot of these fruits with a very sharp knife (looking at you, pineapple). I avoided buying pineapples for the longest time because they were so hard to cut. Finally bought a set of very sharp knives a couple years ago (the same he uses in this video) and it makes cutting pineapple and melons a breeze!

I tasted rambutan for the first time a few months ago its awesome! Also theres another way to cut pineapple. You cut the end and grab it by the leaves, slice the skin off but not too profound, then slice diagonally around it to remove the eyes and slice in horizontal cuts. It makes nice 'stars' to eat.

Here's a better way: Cut pomegranate in half and fill a bowl with water. Use your hands to remove every seed (it's actually super easy). The seeds sink, but the white film stuff will float, so ya just gotta skim off the top layer from the water, strain it, and yeah.

lyliiz i’ve never heard of that method for pomegranate. what i always do is take a paring knife, and cut down at an angle around the flower at the top to get that top stem part out, and from there it’s pretty easy to pull it apart into four sections of the fruit. it’s a little time consuming and messy to eat but i’ve always found it pretty rewarding in the end lol
