Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight is widely considered not only the best Batman movie ever made, but one of the best superhero films ever produced. The Dark Knight gave us the brilliant Joker performance by Heath Ledger, but it also redefined Batman on the silver screen. And this opening scene from The Dark Knight set the table for Batman to be redefined for the modern era.

One detail that makes the opening heist scene so great is how it perfectly captures the escalating criminal response that was mentioned at the end of Batman Begins. The criminals start using armor piercing rounds, automatic firearms, and use theatrics to carry out such an elaborately planned heist that would bring chaos and anarchy to the societal order of Gotham. This 5 minute scene is in many ways a short film that encompasses everything that works about the film, as it features a setup and payoff with character introduction, establishing the plot, and the tone of the film. It’s a true testament to the excellent craftsmanship and filmmaking that the Nolans and the crew brought in when making the Dark Knight.
@VonJay
@VonJay Жыл бұрын
I actually thought it was the weakest part of the movie. If one person doesn’t follow his instructions the whole heist is a failure. His other forms of manipulation where regular people are faced with moral dilemmas, were the most believable and traction building events in the film and probably film history. “If this man isn’t killed by tomorrow I’m going to blow up a hospital.” And people try to kill him. And so on.

@@VonJay Joker is running game theory scenarios which put very simply relies on the idea that every person will always do what’s in their own best interest or a loved one’s best interest instead of looking out for anyone else. Therefore, human behavior is predictable and therefore can also be manipulated. This is the basis of Joker’s worldview (people are driven by a dog eat dog mentality) and there is no true morality in the world. You brought up the other social experiments he conducted on Gotham’s citizens and on Batman. Joker is right about everybody being corruptible if forced into a choice between the greater good and self interest - with the exceptions of Bruce, Rachel and Gordon. They all demonstrate willingness to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. Anyway this opening scene establishes right off the bat that the joker is a master of manipulation, a keen judge of character as it predicts behavior and that he is a master strategist. He’s playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers. I also like how Nolan opens the film with the villain this time as opposed to Begins. It says right away this is going to be different from Begins and we’re picking up right where we left off. Nolan treats Joker like a protagonist in that he shows him excelling and operating at a high level at what he does. This is what you do with serial hero pictures - you show the mc doing his thing and well. Even if someone didn’t know who the joker was from comics, they would probably get the sense that the joker was going to be a formidable opponent for the hero and that he has a dangerously low regard for human life. Note that he probably only leaves the bank manager alive so that he can give a live account / report back to the mob about the encounter over and above any camera footage. He would have given “testimony” about just how scary the Joker was.
@VonJay
@VonJay Жыл бұрын
@@nikkinewbie6014 i still didn’t think that the opening sequence was believable. No matter how good a judge of character the joker is, too many pieces have to fall correctly for the job to be completed. His other exploits, however, were chaotic, and didn’t really depend on order or one domino hitting the next. He has instinctive hold over “Maslow’s hierarchy of needs” and triggers everyone’s limbic and autonomic systems in the process. And I think the joker’s exploits are a little too firebrand for most citizens. Sure there are citizens of Gotham who are more cerebral and strategic, but most people get rattled and make decisions though they are emotional compromised,and eventually don’t work out for their long term interests at all. It’s why I called each of his exploits “Albert Camus’ trolly moral dilemma” where no matter what track you choose, both your family members and strangers will eventually die. Since the joker’s chaos is “a constant state of becoming,” no matter what choice you make.
@Kmmlc
@Kmmlc 10 ай бұрын
@@VonJay It really didn't matter if the bank heist went off perfectly or even succeeded. The Joker was trying to send a message to the criminals backing the bank. He didn't care about the money at all. And honestly anyone willing to rob a bank run by "the mob" would want enough money from it to get away and stay away for life, which means the less sharing the better. The Joker compartmentalized information. No one else knew about the bus being the escape plan because they didn't need to know. Again, people willing to rob a mob bank will most certainly have their own best interests in mind and not the group interests. It's really not hard to manipulate such a small group of people. The Joker also likely selected those people specifically because he knew they would follow instructions.

This film's effect on me didn't really catch on until some days or weeks after I first saw it in the theater. Even today I often point out cases of what I'll call "Joker Syndrome:" nobody panics when things go "according to plan," even if the "plan" is horrifying. What the Joker was getting at in context is that we tend to accept harm and suffering if it's the "expected" or "societally correct" people being harmed or suffering.

Excellent analysis. I also like how it gels with the worries mentioned by Gordon at the end of the previous film- escalation. Batman's taken the fight against crime to the next level and now the criminals are upping their game to match him, with the remaining mob kingpins frightened by Carmine Falcone's downfall and growing so desperate to keep their iron grip on Gotham city and their money that they'll hire a madman who robbed them and then asks for HALF their money as payment for his services. When I first saw Fichtner open fire I thought for a moment maybe Gotham had already started to embrace the terrifying yet cathartic anti-crime mindset seen in The Dark Knight Returns where any citizen is allowed to use lethal force to stop crooks, but no it was just a mob bank. The only opening scene that I consider similar in power and introducing a character would be the opening of Casino Royale, which efficiently establishes the new incarnation of Bond as he experiences all the emotions and sensations coming from his first two kills ever- the first of many. Followed up by the best opening title sequence and song in a 50+ year franchise.

I really enjoyed this video, thank you. It touched on the scripting, but mostly focussed on plotting and narrative. I would add that there were two further elements that made Joker’s intro so powerful and memorable. When he takes off his mask, the writers probably understood that viewers were not going to be at all surprised by Joker’s face. Not because the narrative has made it clear which one is Joker by now, but also because everyone will have seen his appearance from the giant Warner Bros hype machine. So, they gave him that great line, “What doesn’t kill you makes you . . . weirder,” beautifully enhanced by the minimalistic score, which has building throughout the entire preceding set piece, only to surprise listeners (probably on a subconscious level, if not noticeably?) by subverting the usual trope of the big bombastic reveal brass-blast and, instead, plunging the violins loudly down an entire octave to resolve on a dark, minor chord. It’s a perfect storm of all the artistic elements, from acting and lighting, to sound effects and writing, all being given equal attention without any of them being lost in the mix. We often forget the score and sound design after visualising our memories, but their effect is equally powerful. As you would have detected, had the sound been played for that one line which Ledger delivers so flawlessly.

It’s 100% precision, whilst appearing to be on that tipping point between sober and drunk. I've actually not seen this one yet, but when it comes to other movies and how they first show the villain, Die Hard's underplayed and subtle introduction of Hans Gruber is amazing.

I think Heath took his character to a level that even surprised the cast and crew during the filming. He made the movie.

A grand opening to a great film. One thing that can’t be said enough is how Heath Ledger encapsulated the madness of the Joker. I specifically like his mob suit and its dark undertones in each scene. It works like a mask for the Joker in a way. Also the line deliveries are fantastic by Ledger. He completely nailed an iconic comic book villain and made its own persona in the Dark Knight film. Absolutely amazing and always a legendary classic

I used to work exactly where this scene was filmed. Surreal seeing it all in the very imax theater that also appears in the film.

Another great, but nowadays underrated is the opening of once upon a time in the west, by Sergio Leone. From the pulsating sound, the cinematography to the actors facial expression, a marvel of a movie, and definitely one of the best opening of a movie and that was back in 1968!!!👌

It also did so well because it was around the last few years of great flashy movies like GI Joe, Transformers, and many others around that time. We even had Zombie Land around that time. We had a lot of blockbuster movies around that time that made people go to the theaters and then buying them on DVD.

I really think a testament to the dark knight’s quality is that there are still videos being made about it almost 15 years after it’s release.

Putting it like this, the difference between this film and The Dark Knight Rises can be recognized from their respective openings. This scene accomplishes so much, informing us of the story world, the villain, and the themes with such economy. While Bane's opening scene tells us so little about any of that, offering vague, open-ended pieces of information that never really add up, even by the end of the movie. Such a shame.

Bane was simple ... what more do you need to know other then he protected the child of Ra's Al Ghul's daughter. Talia is the main villain of the Dark Knight Rises. Bane is just a supporting henchmen.

I watch this film at least once a year! Never get bored by its magnificence. We got super mega box office movies from the MCU but none of its movies tried to match TDK. Maybe it's not an apple to apple comparison but that's what makes TDK a masterpiece.

Okay, something I really have to make note of in these videos is just how quickly they end. You're talking, finishing up your ideas, and then BAM, cut to outro so fast it practically gives me whiplash. Just give a little bit of time, barely even a *second*, after your final words before cutting to outro so that that cut doesn't end up being so damn abrupt!

There's also a huge Easter Egg when we first see the shot of the Joker standing on that street corner. The mask he's holding looks very much like Cesar Romero's Pagliacci mask seen in the very first TV Batman episode to feature the Joker. So if you were enough of a fan of the old TV show, you'd know right off the bat that the guy holding the bag and mask was the *real* Joker.

You didn't talk about the lighting of the scene. In the scene where he holds the mask, the light doesn't show the green hair despite being in daylight. However, when he puts the thingy in the mouth of the Bank Manager. We see the colour of his hair before he removes his masks. If we saw the colour of his hair from the very first shot, it wouldn't have worked as much

I also love how the first minute with them starting the bank robbery is the perfect setup for Batman to come in and rock their shit, but he never does, instead the one to take down the robbers is the joker himself in an act of betrayal.

The min this opening scene finished I felt like I was watching Point Break again and it wasnt just about the masks... It was the grain on the film and style of bank heist. This opening instantly captivated me and the movie remains one of the best movies Ive seen since the turn of the century. Ive watched so many 80's early 90's action movies 10's perhaps even hundreds of times. This is the only movie since 2000 Ive watched 5+ times.
