There are many different terms for GPS approaches which are rather confusing (RNP/RNAV/GNSS/IAN) but they all come down to the fact that they are GPS approaches. This video shows you how to perform such GPS approach using the IAN function of the Boeing 737NG.
The IAN function lets the pilot use the Approach mode of the autopilot to fly an "artificial" ILS approach which creates a flight plath calculated using LNAV and VNAV data from the FMS. HOWEVER, you could also just perform the GPS approach by flying using LNAV and VNAV modes!

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. I was flying a 747 in a mountainous area and didn't realize there was no ILS system while there was little to no visibility. I noticed the RNAV listing on my computer as an approach but I've never used it basically missing the airport. Now I understand the barometric system and how that works with the computers. Time to go test it out .....Thank you sooo much

Thanks for this! I tried shooting a GNSS approach the other day, but as I had the ILS freqs tuned for 'backup', I was quite surprised when the A/C started a CAT III autoland! Will have to try this again. My local airport recently dropped its SIDs/STARs so pilots have been flying the GNSS approaches because they have nice transitions.

You're welcome! Yes that's the tricky part, it may easily fly an ILS of a nearby runway if you tuned an ILS frequency in the NAV radios. That's why there are also distinct annunciations on the PFD for the IAN approach so you know what kind of approach you are actually flying :)

It makes sense to disconnect before minimums let's say 500-1000ft to compensate imprecise nature of VNAV

Very good. I have one question. Selecting baro instead of radio for min. is based on CAT 1,2, or 3. So if you selected Baro then this runway is cat 1?

They are just airports that are in the neighborhood, you can view them by selecting ARPT on the EFIS panel.

hi AviationPro i am a fsx pilot i am using gps mode in fsx there is a setup what u can choos between gps mode of nav mode it means it gps mode is doing every thing self but the nav mode is doing it your self mode do p3d have the same stuff as fsx thank you

Would like to see correct procedure to the LFMN (Nice) airport RWY 22R/L :). It is very nice vor approach (not sure about difference between VOR A; VOR B; and VOR C). Also if you will have time could you do some tutorial about STAR's including the transition? For example at Schiphol these transitions are very weird. I dont know how to explain it but they are not connected to runway there is always some kind of circle including SPL VOR in the transition - and these procedures are same as in the real world but the difference is ATC which gives you vectors so you dont have to fly through SPL at 7000 and then overflow the runway and do circle back :D.

I'm not really sure either what the difference between those are. As for the transitions at EHAM, yes, most of them run via the SPL VOR, sometimes you simply have to enter the holding pattern at SPL first before you start making a weird turn. Mostly you will be vectored though or you can just vector yourself ;)

I have 2 questions. I was doing this flight from EGKK to EGPE. I selected RNAV 05. After that, I checked the LEGS page. Brings up a route discontinuity thick wasn’t there before. So I fixed the discontinuity. And then tried to fix the approach on the legs page. But it says Invalid Entry. 1. Is it normal for the plane to bring up the route discontinuity? Or was I doing something wrong? 2. Which waypoint/airway am I supposed to select in the legs Page to select my approach? Thank you for reading :)

Hey, I would like to know how did you keybind your additional keyboard. Because I tried to do the same thing but in the controls menu I can see only those actions of Default aircraft, and so f.e. I tried to setup F9 for autopilot (in aerosoftA320) and it did not work, (strangely i tried the same with landing lights, which seem to activate after pressing the button, but the switch in VC doesnt do anything..) Is it like fully working with your 737 and do you have any tips? ty

Usually you can enter key bindings via the configuration manager of your addon aircraft or via its FMC. In this case, in the PMDG 737 you can select key bindings via the FMC. I don't have the Aerosoft A320 so I'm not sure how it would work there ;).

HI mate do you use windows 10 for flight sim, then if its so does the Saitek Pro Flight Yoke and your Saitek rudder pedals works with windows 10? please let me know because i'm thinking of purchasing them but i do not want to purchase and then realize that they're not comparable for windows 10 thanks :)

Hi, yes I do. I had some trouble installing the drivers for the yoke after the Windows 10 anniversary update, but it's fixed now and the yoke + quadrant and the rudder pedals work perfectly fine :)

I'm curious - why don't you go into LNAV/VNAV mode? You went into APP mode. I'm asking because I watched another tutorial and they used LNAV/VNAV.

Because this 737 has the IAN function available. It will display everything as if it were an ILS approach, but you can use LNAV or VNAV too.

The 777 doesn't have IAN like the 737 in this video, so you will just be using LNAV and VNAV.

In principe is RNP approach gewoon dezelfde methode zoals ik hier laat zien, alleen moet je vliegtuig daar de juiste equipment voor aan boord hebben.

Klopt, de PMDG 737 heeft dat, moet je wel even kijken per livery en airline options of alles goed staat. Je moet bijvoorbeeld de ISFD gauges hebben ipv de standaard standby gauges en er zijn wat andere opties die je eigenlijk aan moet zetten (weet ze even niet uit mn hoofd), maar in principe vliegt ie gewoon een RNP approach.

u can turn off the A/P and follow the LNAV/VNAV data manually but not in a complicated approaches that has alot of points and different altitudes

When I'm departing and contacting the ATC, is the stand I call out just the gate I chose on the menu? If not where do I get the stand number? Thanks!

It should be the gate you selected. But you have to make sure by looking outside and looking which stand number is displayed on the gate or on the ground when lining up to a gate. Also, you should confirm if the gate number in your scenery corresponds to the gate number on the charts of the airport. If you have an old scenery, it's best to determine your position on the chart and give ATC the gate number you are on according to the chart, otherwise you will give ATC an old gate number that might be all the way on the other side of the airport.

I'm sorry, but there's no such thing as "FSX 2017" or a "NAV/GPS Switch" in the Boeing 737. I don't use default airplanes, nor any versions of FSX so I'm not really sure what you're aiming at here ;)

The default aircraft are unable to do (I'm pretty sure) all the of the approaches listed. They can fly ILS, vor and ndb i think, but it's very basic compared to a high quality (high priced) aircraft that AviationPro, assuming he's using the PMDG ngx. As for fsx2017, there's no such things but there are now a wide range of flight simulators that are updated for modern PCs. Here's a few Prepar3D v3(32bit)/Prepar3D v4(64bit) X-Plane 11 Flight Sim World. All are great.

Indeed, no ILS is used at all and you shouldn't tune a frequency.

I don't know, it should work. Just select the RNV arrival for the runway in the DEP/ARR page and then go to the LEGS page to activate and execute.

do you need the rwy coarse? or do you need to be on approach in able to activate it?

You need to activate the route in the legs page and make sure you are flying on that active route (for example using LNAV) and then arm the Approach mode, it should work. I'm not sure why it would give an invalid entry error, is your AIRAC data up to date?

Great video but there's one thing I'm confused about... I was doing a test flight and when I came up to the approach (I had a full flight plan set out already using LNAV and VNAV) and armed the approach mode, only the FAC thing came up but not the glide path. Is this normal? Cheers

Is the aircraft able to capture the G/P without the FAC captured (because it will capture it later)?

Good question! I don’t know to be honest, if it really acts like an ILS capture it won’t be able to capture the ‘glideslope’ (G/P) before the localizer (FAC). Give it a try, you can always use vertical speed in case you’re not on the FAC yet

@@AviationPro Well, I actually tried it in Toncontin, Honduras. It didn't work on the RNAV 02 Approach, but this was maybe due to a higher capture altitude than on the chart (+300ft) or a steep glide path (3,5°). The glide path was correctly simulated (I guess) but the aircraft just didn't capture it. I am using the version 3.32d of the Zibo modified B738 in X-Plane 11.30 with the AIRAC 1813 and I would really appreciate if someone could tell me their experience with the PMDG B738. Anyway, thank you for your compact tutorial. I tried a standard RNP Approach and it worked ;)

It's noted on the charts, in this case in the table on the bottom-left where it says OCA/OCH. In this case I'm using LNAV and VNAV, so I can use the BARO setting for the minimums which gives me a Obstacle Clearance Altitude of 1479 feet.

No, IAN is a specific feature of the 737 to just simulate the ILS indications during the RNAV approach.

AviationPro I'm waiting your next video on 777 with RNAV VNAV approach 😂 and if you do this approach don't forget FPA and charts your best friends during RNAV approach ;)

Should be yes, you would just use LNAV and VNAV since those aircraft don't have an IAN function.
