Күн бұрын

The 4-7-8 Breathing Exercise is utterly simple, takes almost no time, requires no equipment and can be done anywhere. Although you can do the exercise in any position, sit with your back straight while learning the exercise. Place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth, and keep it there through the entire exercise. You will be exhaling through your mouth around your tongue; try pursing your lips slightly if this seems awkward.
1) Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.
2) Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four.
3) Hold your breath for a count of seven.
4) Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight.
5) This is one breath. Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three more times for a total of four breaths.
Note that you always inhale quietly through your nose and exhale audibly through your mouth. The tip of your tongue stays in position the whole time. Exhalation takes twice as long as inhalation. The absolute time you spend on each phase is not important; the ratio of 4:7:8 is important. If you have trouble holding your breath, speed the exercise up but keep to the ratio of 4:7:8 for the three phases. With practice you can slow it all down and get used to inhaling and exhaling more and more deeply.

I've been doing this for a number of years and it helps me fall asleep or calm my nerves. But one thing not mentioned in this video (is that you have to take yogic breaths i.e. diaphragmatic breathing...some people call it horizontal breathing (google it, it is quite simple) instead of the 'vertical' breathing where your shoulders go up and down as you inhale/exhale); Also I do it much slower with diaphragmatic breathing (I breathe in for almost 4 seconds). Hold for 7 and exhale for 8.

I once respected Dr. Weil and signed up to get newsletters from him. I quickly found out that the marketing branch of the Weil empire is overwhelming and will not let you rest for a moment. There is no respect at all for anybody who's email address is in their hands. I have unsubscribed time after time and marked as spam yet still they send me a new spam from a new address. So, like him or not, (which I once did) I recommend that you avoid letting his marketing machine ever see your email address. There is no group on the web that violates your trust more than they do. I hope that this warning is taken as a positive input to help you avoid problems and nothing more nor less. It is not about the health messages, which can be good, but about abusive marketing technique that Dr. Weil uses to build his financial empire. Cheers!

This very interesting exercise makes me think of how some people seem to naturally have a greater innate ability to control the autonomic nervous system. For example, good opera singers have the ability to regulate and control it while they have to sing long musical phrases over an enormous loud orchestra, unmiked, in front of thousands, along with the pressure of the conductor, stage director, competitive peers, and newspaper critics. Star athletes also must be able to regulate the autonomic nervous system in order to perform well. The "fight or flight" response is a normal human instinct, and yet, it is the "heroes" who are able to control it. There are also psychopaths who have this ability, too...

Folks, there are written instructions in the video description answering a lot of the questions here. Yes, you keep your tongue on the roof of your mouth the whole time, and the 4-7-8 is a RATIO, not seconds. Read the description or read here: www.drweil.com/videos-features/videos/breathing-exercises-4-7-8-breath/ I don't, however, know if you're supposed to try to fill your lungs completely, or if you are supposed to forcefully push the air out or let it come out naturally.

In Indian yoga breathing system (Pranayama), while inhaling one should fill the chest portion (upper part) and while exhaling check to you pull the stomach in (lower part). If one is not aware of this, then while inhaling people tend to fill the stomach portion and exhaling empty the chest part. The second type will make the exercise a tiresome practice. Dr.Weil may clarify on the relevance of the above for getting a good sleep.

4-7-8 (if applied in seconds) equates to 3 breaths per minute. Quite a reduction if your breathing more than the normal 6-12 breathes per minute. So what do we do in between the 4-7-8 sessions to maintain the reduction in breathing pattern, nose #breathing (in & out through nose 24/7) keep good upright posture during your waking hours, and relaxation of our shoulders all while going through our daily life. Ref. Doctor Buteyko and his Evidenced Based Buteyko Method. "‘…Normalisation of breathing immediately triggers a healing process…" Buteyko Trilogy Volume 1 Chapter 17: The First Handbook

It was inner, visceral; it was harder just after waking up and some days I couldn't even sit to work without pain. after two weeks practicing 4-7-8 breathing, it almost disappeared. Placebo? Rhythmic breathing gives a healthier heart rate variability (HRV) and stimulates the sympathetic nervous system. People seem to prefer different rates: The world champion free diver Stig Severinsen advise a 1:2 ratio. The Navy Seals use Box Breathing which is 4 seconds in - 4 seconds hold - 4 seconds out - 4 seconds hold. Dr. Alen Watkins says the steady and even rhythm is the most important. Wim Hoff has a different approach: Deep inhale and short exhale - do it 25-30 times then hold for as long as possible. Breath out and take a normal inhale. Do this three times. In general the key is rhythm, smoothness and less inhale than combined hold and exhale. The Wim Hoff Method is different as it is a kind of controlled hyperventilation. It all takes practice. Which ratio is the best comes down to who you ask. It's all a mix of old tradition and new science.

By breathing out good chunks of CO2, the body releases acid, which deacidfies the body. Otherwise the organism has to make "debts" on the body, by taking alkaline minerals like potassium, calcium and magnesium out of the bones and muscles to stabalize the pH-value of the blood. The lack of those alkaline minerals lead to depression, loss of energy, nervosity etc.

Just out of curiosity, why are we limited to 8 cycles at a time? I like doing it as a form of mediation, but 8 cycles is pretty short.

I can never do breathing exercises and I'm not sure why. It always ends up feeling like I'm restricting my breathing by not breathing naturally and that causes anxiety and suffocation feeling. His brisk pacing however when he was counting really helped. Maybe I'm always counting my seconds too slowly

it helps to do a diaphragmatic breath aka abdominal expansion NOT upper chest inhalation. also the inhalation is rapid and deep, hold breath, then slow and even exhalation, still simple and effective no matter ... over time your breath may become deeper and the whole process take a little longer ... not a lot but some.
