THANK YOU!! I ruined the black plastic face plate on a vintage Sansui 300 receiver by thoughtlessly cleaning it with acetone, turning it a blotchy grey colour. This trick undid the damage and made the face plate look brand new! Seriously, it's like it never happened. So happy you took the time to make this video!!

I did my chevy avalanche with the heat gun and the results were very good, up until about a year, if you do it again it does NOT look the same. So if you do use the heat gun you need to use the UV protectant VERY IMPORTANT. Just like sweet projects said, spray it down with the UV protectant a few times a year. Prevention is the 1st defence

Just did this today on an old van's plastic bumpers and I am absolutely stunned at how good they turned out. I went over it twice to even out, but the second pass was put on as the sun was going down, so it's still a bit oily - as I didn't wipe it dry. I'll do that next treatment. I also used it on various trim pieces and it shocked me how good it looks. As with your suggestions on tire shine videos, I could tell places that didn't look uniform should have been cleaned better, as when I did that, the results were much more even and consistent-looking. If it holds up well, even if it needs the occasional maintenance wipe-down, it's a great win - especially when one thinks how much more they are paying for so few ounces of the various trim products. Thanks!!!

I used a heat gun on the back bumper trim of my 2001 Ford Expedition and it looked great for about 1 year, but... I failed to use any protectant and it's just as faded as before. So glad to find this second method, as you can only pull up so much oil with the heat gun. ATF is an excellent cleaner for so many things, I can definitely see the benefit of letting it soak into the plastics to hopefully restore some of the lost oils. Will definitely be following up with a good UV protector this time!

an old school method is...peanut butter. the natural oils from the peanuts don't 'attack' the plastics the same as a mineral oil would. the heat gun just draws more oil to the surface and dries out the plastic. The peanut oil gets absorbed and replenishes the oils in the plastic. plus its really cheap! and yes, smooth not crunchy!

Great tips!!! I watched both videos... I really like the Trans Fluid better... is seems like the heat gun pulling oils out of already dry plastic would be hard on the plastic... the Trans Fluid replaces moisture, seems like a better solution. Your suggestion after doing the Trans Fluid is to use a UV protectant 4x per year... is there one you recommend?

It is Imperative that it be hot outside( plastic be up to temp) if you’re doing method #2? Also I’ve seen responses to existing comments saying to do both methods and to do one or the other. So, which is it for best results?

Cathy Gregg let it soak in as long as you can then wipe then you can add the protectant right after and do the protectant a few times a month until it looks the way you want :)

So can you do either? Or both for better results? That magic fluid is like ten times faster than the heating gun.
@SweetProjectCars
@SweetProjectCars 7 жыл бұрын
yes, either will work, personally, i like to do the heat gun then the fluid just to really make it look awesome but you dont have to the heat is the most permanent.

Would this work on door/window weatherstripping as well to keep it soft and pliable and good shape, or will the ATF degrade the rubber? What else do you use on weatherstripping?

I did all the steps as you mentioned. I have a white 3rd generation Camaro with the large/deep headlight buckets that are black, but had faded to grey. Now THEY LOOK GREAT! And it was so inexpensive, quick and easy. Thanks for all your tips. This is the 3rd one I've tried and they all work great just like you say!

Paul thank you and the tire dressing is tough if you dont have those products...can you find any type of rubber conditioner or try the trans fluid mixed 75/25 with acetone or try a good shoe or leather cream or conditioner.
