What a great video! As if God knew exactly what I needed this morning. After 20 years of accumulating fabrics after my first quilt, I’ve been struggling/intimidated when it comes to choosing fabrics for a project. Thank you so much Patty for explaining so eloquently how to pick fabrics for a quilt. This is exactly where I am stuck in quilting. Blessings! ❤

Oh my goodness!!! I'm so happy this answered some questions you have! You should look up my Mismatched Patchwork quilt project and using a color wheel, make a few of those. You would learn so much about color, but it would be fun for you and not intimidating at all! Even though I call it a beginner quilt, it's fun for everyone. And if you approach from a color perspective, I think you'd learn a lot and enjoy yourself. pattymacmakes.com/easiest-quilt-for-beginners/ I also have a couple of videos on that project....which is on my bed and I love it.

Thanks Patty! I enjoy searching for fabrics that complement each other but joann's organization (?) makes it a challenge. This tip will make it a little easier.
@PattymacMakes2 жыл бұрын
You're welcome Kim! Yes.....it is pretty difficult to mix and match fabric in Joann because for the most part it's all just random prints. Which is fine for people sewing garments because they only need one fabric for a top or a dress or pants or whatever. But for quilting, we need sometimes as many as 7 or 8 fabrics depending on the complexity of the block. Using the color dots is the only way I can negotiate mixing and matching their stuff. I do hope it helps you the next time you face that massive wall of cottons.
@kimhandy18612 жыл бұрын
@@PattymacMakes I find that the quality of the fabrics can be really different too. How much do you watch for those differences? Do you stick with one brand rather than mixing them?
@PattymacMakes2 жыл бұрын
@@kimhandy1861 Yes, that is an excellent point! Well, you're kind of stuck in Joann in terms of mixing manufacturers. If I'm buying higher end products, I think Moda and Riley Blake are incredibly nice. And if I can buy within one collection, that definitely makes things a bit easier. I mix my stuff like crazy to be honest. Starch and careful pressing has work for me so far.

Hi patty. Ok so I watched ! thank you for sharing. I often have fabrics with no color chart along the edge wich as you said makes it harder. And yes!! Prints are a stinker to match up some times. I just love so many of the prints you select. They feel so whimsical and remind me of growing up in the 70s. I was telling a friend about a print you shared on a recent video of owels, moons, birds.. it was mainly black, white with orange moons. I LOVED it. I am looking forward to your next color video!! 👍💕👍
@PattymacMakes2 жыл бұрын
I'm really happy you enjoyed this Annette! Sometimes the color chart is in shapes and not dots. Or they print the selvage in the colors used in the print. Or sometimes it's not there at all as you say! It's a challenge to do something that looks put together and not a mess that's for sure. It's a subtle art. I also grew up in the 70s so I'm sure that flavors my love of color and bold prints. I still like old tv shows and music, too! The beautiful print you mention is the Crescent Collection from Ruby Star Society. Sadly it seems to be sold out everywhere. You might be able to find some on etsy. I had purchased the yardage in an order last May that didn't ship until everything came in and that wasn't until September. So in the meantime, the Crescent fabrics sold out and I wasn't able to get anything else from that collection. I'm working on notes this afternoon for the next series on using color. It's kind of a complicated subject, so I'm going to approach it in small bites.

You're welcome Rosary! To be honest, in the hours and hours of videos and teaching materials I've have the pleasure to review, I've never seen it mentioned except one time. And then only in passing. I think it's a very helpful tool in getting a series of fabrics together. Color is a challenging subject, so allow yourself some time to explore your stash and see what fun and unexpected combinations YOU can put together! Putting fabrics together for a block or quilt design feels hard, because it IS hard! There are principles to color mixing and matching that isn't discussed very much, so I'm hoping to provide some assistance on it. Once you start putting it together, it's much easier.
