With so many choices to make when it comes to quilting your top, you'd think choosing the thread would be easy! Unfortunately, with thousands of different colors, types, and weights to choose from, it can be overwhelming.
In this weeks video, we talk about thread weight, what it means, and how it affects the quilting. We'll also examples so you can see exactly how the thread weight looks when quilted out.
After we discuss thread weight, we'll also go over colors and how they look on different solids and prints, giving you the information you need to make an informed decision. With this help, you'll be able to confidently pick the perfect thread for your next quilting project to achieve the exact outcome you want! I'll also share a couple tips about colors you may not have considered and one of my favorite colors of thread.

Can I use quilting thread on a regular machine that has a horizontal spindle for loading thread.

I'm using a sewing machine that has a horizontal spool pin. My quilting thread is the same size all the way up and then has a small plastic cylindrical part that protudes from the center of the spool and causes the spool cap to fit so poorly that it rattles around and soon falls off the spindle. How do I get the thread to stay on the spindle so I can properly wind my bobbin and sew.

If we are sewing with a cone on our regular sewing machine, we just leave it sitting to the side. If it moves around, you can stick it in a mug.

Showed top thread, what do you use for bottom in each weight of thread?

I always match my top thread to my bottom thread. That way, I don't have to worry about different colors poking through the top or bottom.

I also struggle with size needle for the size thread. I have a sitdown long arm that uses a 16 or 18 needle. Help explaine, please.

Needles are opposite thread. The larger the number, the bigger the needle. Generally, you are going to want a larger needle for a heavier thread so that it fits through the eye without shedding and causing it to break. I use a 100/16 with the 40 or 50 weight threads.
