How to Pick Up and Hold a Hedgehog

I did a video today with Ms. Teazel on how to pick up and hold your new hedgehog, which can be a pretty intimidating experience if the hedgehog is very aggressive and you have never handled a hedgehog before. The key to picking them up is to do it from below. If you try to pick them up from the top they will curl into a ball with your fingers in the center, which will be painful as you will have spines pressed against your fingers.
Your new hedgehog will get more comfortable with being held if you handle them every single day. Some need more time than others to get comfortable around you. Be persistent and don't give up on them!
In case you didn't know, the African pygmy hedgehog is a domesticated species of hedgehog. They are not like the wild hedgehogs that roam around in the UK and other regions of the world. It is not a good idea to pick up wild hedgehogs because if the spine would happen to cut you, there is a high chance for infection. This is because hedgehogs lick their spins with with their saliva, which can sometimes have venom or other toxic chemicals (it is used as a defensive mechanism since hedgehogs are resilient to venom)

By chance, not long after watching this video I had an encounter with a hedgehog in a park - he was in a really unfortunate place and didn't move from it for a long time. To prevent him from being harmed I decided to pick him up and take to some bushes where he'd be safe. Worked without a problem! Thanks for the instructions!

They can live 8-10 years ig properly cared for. People who assume that they die in 3-5 years generally stop putting the same effort into care as they did earlier on. If you got your hedgie as a baby, 5 years is definitely middle aged :)

@@mikalerow2188 An animal will almost always survive longer in captivity when looked after properly than when they are in the wild. Same with hedgehogs, They estimate 2 - 5 years in the wild depending (could be longer if things go well). And when looked after by humans, 7 years onward.. 10-11 being common, But they have been known to go longer and the oldest known was 16!

We've got a few around here, I was trying to video them eating the other night but it was too dark. they just snuffle around our garden. @@Brui05 Good question though. Their retinas are supposed to only contain rods. So they are considered to be colour blind. However some of those rods contain cone like nuclei. Because of those cones they are likely to see yellows and shades of blue in the right lightning. Perhaps even more.

It's as much lack of habitat, slug pellets, people paving or shingling their gardens and putting up impassable walls or fencing. Houses are being built on green and brown belt land, modern farming methods have increased field sizes and destroyed hedgerows, and use of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides poison their foods or them directly, same goes for garden chemicals and rat poison, etc. There are more roads and cars than ever, but I don't think that's the main problem.

When I was a child and living on a farm, I found 2 baby hedgehogs. One was hiccuping and the other was sneezing. It was so cute.

@@juliasmith5627 its what hedgehogs do when they sense something, especially when they are around at night. We had some living in our garden for years. At night they would move around in the bushes and when you approach them they would start doing their hisses. Seems odd to me, because they don't even really try to hide like other nocturnal animals. Basically they give themselves away as soon as they hear your footsteps.

Most hedgehogs are domesticated and hers wasnt just picked up out the wild. It was most likely a baby from a domesticated one. They also live longer in captivity because their diet is somewhat picky and they usually cant find or catch their food.

Teazel's so adorable and very well behaved! It's amazing that you can let her lick your hands - Albie would most certainly give me a terrible bite if he smelt any scent or food, haha! :)

Thank you very much for your video! We (two people, no pets) received Mace from a 4.5 person family that had a dog and a cat. So far we've been letting him get used to our scents, our voices, and the whole new environment he's found himself in, and we've been a little nervous about picking him up. Practice makes perfect eh? This was really useful as a hedgehog owner,i got it yesterday and i was a little scared to pick it up because of its spikes so I thought it would hurt me,but when i saw this on how to hold it with gloves or towels.i use a blanket a small baby blanket and i sleep with it so it can have my sent and my hedgehog can get used to it and adapt!

Great video! My hedgehog scared me at first with her huffing and puffing, but I soon realized that she was just scared and protecting herself :P She's now perfectly comfortable after I hold her for 5-10 seconds :) Amazing animals! I've had her for over a year now :D
