I recently remembered how much I enjoy playing Ridley. He's got a lot of flaws, but I click with him so well. I get to laugh and have fun because the silly space dragon's moveset works for me instead of getting annoyed that I'm losing with my favorite characters.

Can we get a video for character suggestions based on current mains? Like, "if you play X, you might also like Y because they are similar, or Z because they are good for covering X's bad matchups"

I actually would really love to see like, gameplans for specific characters. Like I know some chars have similar gameplans/play styles and seeing those together is helpful but alot of chars have like specific things

Playing a character that you have the most fun with is (IMO) the most important thing when it comes to picking up a character. It's even better if it's a character that you have attachment for from that character's respective series (Ex. I love Banjo-Kazooie so playing Banjo makes me happy, you love playing Star Fox games so Fox is probably meaningful to you, etc) to further develop your growth + Smash goals. It's also worth noting that there is always the idea of picking up another character, top tier or whatever, to help cover your main's bad match-ups especially in this 80+ roster that is Smash Ultimate.

I gave up on choosing, and after a long time figuring out how each character functions and learning what I can, I'm a random main. Which my Smash group both loves and hates depending on who I get.😂

Fun is the most important imo. As soon as I saw WiiFit getting announced I thought "wait this char is in? I definitely have to check them out". I instantly fell in love with them. Also the faces people make when I lock in WiiFit at local tournaments and I beat them with the character everyone laughs about is so satisfying. 😊

I’ve been in a character crisis for a while now. I mained Joker and secondary Sephiroth. But, recently I lost my passion for playing them and took a break from playing them. I didn’t know who to main for a while, but recently, I started to play Snake and I had so much fun playing him. Now I’m trying to main Snake and secondary Sephiroth and Joker.

When I played traditional fighting games I had trouble finding any characters at all I had fun with but with smash it's finding a character I DON'T like. Loving Hero, Zelda, Palutena, Sheik, and Gannondorf the most. You got the zoners who can scrap if need be, the assassin, the all around decent sword guy with RNG power, and the heavy hitter. All bases covered

I chose Corrin because something just clicked, I immediately found out my gameplan with him/her and decided to stick with the character, then I checked his/her matchup chart and decided to play Wii fit as a secondary because the two of them cover like 95% of the entire cast from +0 to +3. Yeah sure some of the characters both of them lose to are in top 20 (Pika, ZSS, Pac-Man) but I decided to not care because I just have to farm these match-ups until I feel confortable enough to have my chances thanks to m-u knowledge that my opponent might not have.

I played Incineroar at one point and thought his grappler style fit me best. However, I wanted to win and believed everyone telling me that you can't get good results with him. Skyjay's recent results have encouraged me to pick the character up again, and I've never been so sure of a main until now.

For me the cool thing about picking up a new main is the fact that I just play around with different fighters until one sticks

Hero is the only character I could break into 12 mil GSP with, and I think the best strategy imho, is play solid. Out range ppl with side b, pressure with neutral b to get grabs and only use down b to recover with Zoom, punish shield breaks, and buff when opponent is respawning. Otherwise, trying for silly things like crits, hocus pocus for invincibility and hatchet man and flame slash is too risky. But, to each Hero his own.

Imo for most of the player base in competitive which is around mid level should focus on who they find fun. Link is by FAR my favorite character in this game and he’s been dropping in viability as time goes on. While I still believe in link, he’s my favorite character and I’m sticking with him until the end. Most people until like high and top level should focus on who they find fun example being some of the players in my region who destory everyone play banjo and kirby.

Competitively speaking---pick a top tier character. If you can't do that you are playing at some level of disadvantage. Its Math. Best outlook---try to have fun. Finding a character you mesh with may just increase your outlook and help you have fun. What SQ doesn't like is when people take success and deflate it. It just ruins the fun of someone's choices and commitment. It is entirely possible for a bad, very bad, mathmatically bad character to be picked by a super practiced pro player dedicated to the character and see something you've never seen before. It doesn't mean your going to win a tournament---it does mean you've seen something amazing and rare which is something great for people like me who don't go to tournaments anymore. What a wierd game we play. Thanks for covering this Esam.

King Dedede main here. I draw a lot of inspiration from atomsk for my dedede play and he works with my playstyle so well. He's big, hes beefy, and he has the survivability of a cockroach. He hits like a mach-ten truck too. Hes got the patient, methodical play that i tend to enjoy and my friends hate playing against my dedede. But esam is absolutely right just play who you find fun and youll have success!

MKleo's Byleth vs his Aegis is proof that you don't have to play top-tiers to have fun or be good. It also proves how important it is to play to your strengths. Despite Aegis being an overall better character than Byleth, MkLeo's Byleth tends to have better results. This is because Byleth has more emphasis on spacing, which is one of MKLeo's greatest strengths. Meanwhile MKLeo's Aegis has cost him top 8 quite a few times.

One thing I think that should be considered as well is clips. I grew up with pacman but even then I highly doubt I would be maining him if I didnt know that he'd be sm fun and the clips you can get with him are so absurd.

I remember last year my friend kept beating me with donkey Kong no matter what character I played. I had been starting to learn Wolf on the side but I didn’t think of him as my main. The first time I pulled out the Wolf I 3 stocked him 😂

When I was 10 and first played brawl, I just thought bows were cool, so I picked pit and he was my main for many years, including the first 3 and a half years in ultimate, but then two things happened: I was getting tired of dropping multihits and being slow in the air and meanwhile all this I played xenoblade and I fell in love with the series, so now I play pyra and mythra and I'm honestly enjoying the game to the fullest, even though it was always fun

Banjo is goofy and fun and people respect Wonderwing existing to the point I don’t have to use it to have it apply pressure. Legit I’ve had people try to hard punish a Wonderwing that wasn’t used.

As a Mega Man main, some characters choose you, you don't choose them

I like playing Little Mac, Ganondorf, and Kirby. I also like Sonic, corrin, Pokemon trainer, and Byleth but also play captain falcon, rob, Bowser Jr., Snake, and Bowser, Pikachu, and robin.

Maining a character you find fun is what I find most important. I found Bowser cause of custom moves and how fun they were and I never stopped playing him. Sure playing the tier list works for results, but you ain't enjoying it, what's the point.

I’ve just been putting time into as many characters as appeal to me, when I first picked up the game it was Kirby and dedede (like many people starting out). Then I discovered Zelda and was like, they can’t get in. I eventually picked up Jigglypuff because I decided zoners were lame and I thought it would be hilarious to win with a pink balloon. It took a while but I improved a lot at jiggs to where she became my best character. And I was like, WAIT I can learn anyone! Fast forward and I’ve put some time into Peach, PT, Wario, and more recently Falco. With inclinations towards playing a lot more, at least in a friendly capacity. I can just pick any character I think is cool and get a lot better at them. Maybe at some point I’ll settle in on a smaller group but learning the basics of every character has been super fun.

I've been having a bit of a character crisis and I've hopped between characters for awhile but I keep finding myself coming back to the same ones eventually. I picked up Rosalina several years ago cause when I play her I'm never able to just autopilot and I play better overall, even if I still lose. So I've finally picked up more characters like that. I'm finally dedicated to sticking with Rosa and I've also finally made the effort to pick up MegaMan. He's one of my favorite video game characters and franchises ever since I was a kid, but I always thought I would never be able to play him. I also picked up Sephiroth just so I can have a little dlc in my back pocket lol. With these three I have never been more satisfied with my gameplay and I've been having more fun than I have in a long time

I picked my characters by choosing characters that I liked from my favorite games, then just continued using them and practicing them against CPUs. I eventually got familiar with their combos and their abilities, then I would pull them out against other people and just suddenly began winning games. I guess it might not work for everyone, but I'd say it did work for me. Just wanted to point this out, are those figurines of Travis and Meryl from Mother 4/Oddity on the shelf in the background next to Samus? It kind of looks like it.

And this is where I'd main Piranha Plant... *If I Wasn't BROKE!!* Tier pickers have always kinda bothered me. Because of the DLC gimmicks that the base roster characters don't get, I've always felt like I'm at a disadvantage. Don't get me wrong, I like the DLC characters, I even like playing as Min Min, but not owning them on my switch while only having played on my older brother(Who owns all the DLC)'s switch it has become clear that EVERY DLC CHARACTER IS BROKEN. Also I hate fighting Kazuya. He isn't as broken as Steve, but at least Steve doesn't have the infamous Electric Wind God Fist or whatnot.

I like kirby characters because they have extra jumps and are cool and cute lol Also Ike after I heard Ike is good for learning the game and samus and snake because projectiles and bombs are cool and the game series they come from are cool fox is fun to play and I guess is somehow a high tier character (I just don't understand how anything works, the game is really complex) Characters whose attacks feel like they only scratch and don't do jack aren't fun. Marth is boring to play because he's too straightforward in terms of presentation and his attacks feel like he's swinging a feather. normal human with a stick isn't cool compared to all those other characters. even human with a burning stick and big human with a big stick are more interesting.

Maybe this is just my own anecdotal experience but I honestly think it's more important in this particular game (considering how relatively well balanced it is) to play a character you connect with than to play one that's considered the best. I've never clicked with a fighting game character in any game faster and more completely than I did with Sephiroth in Ultimate and, even though he has VERY obvious flaws, I just play better with him than anyone else. Most people will say he isn't as broken as Steve , Aegis or Kazuya but I personally feel more carried with Sephiroth than I ever could with any of them because they just don't fit who I am. Play who you love!

Chrom is so underrated. I think he belongs much higher on the tier list than most place him!

I'm by no means a top player but I personally feel like what matters the most isn't tiers but how much you actually click and connect with the character. Even if a character you click with isn't as good as a character you want to play you'll play way better with the character that feels natural to play with. You have to make so many quick decisions in smash that making those decisions with a character you aren't super comfortable with will just be more uncomfortable and put you in a weird spot. Plus ultimate has so many viable characters anyway that it just works out.

I want to get back into Smash for the first time in years. I know I'd never get beyond locals, but do you have recommendations on where to get in (information-wise) regarding the meta? In this game, I like Yoshi, Wolf, Roy, Samus, Gunner, and K Rool, but I could never get comfy with a main in this game like I could with 4.

i cant enjoy playing on a low level forever in a game since i want to improve and become more competitive but my struggle with ultimate is that i like characters like sheik or joker and for me personally i feel like they are very bad characters to start the game with since they already require such a high amount of overall mechanical skill as well as a deep understanding for matchups the game itself and gameplans. I still enjoy watching it though and i love your videos for the way you display everything in an educational way and are able to seperate your opinion from rational thoughts.

I loved steve. Viable, fun, and a character I play the game of as my favorite. When he was banned I had just learned basic ladder combos. The only other characters I played much were sephiroth, who is hard to solo main, pikachu, who I hadn’t played in years, and aegis, who I got ten times worse at after switching to tilt stick. My conpetetive dreams have been ruined forever. Idk what to do… Edit: he was the perfect main

I would much more prefer to see Pro Players commentate on top tournament matches and discuss all those small details during matches, rather than making tier lists. I think that time would be much better spent that way.

Xenoblade 1 is my favorite game of all time. I tried to main Shulk due to this fact. I like Swordie characters, but I just can't click with Shulk's Monado arts.

The way I've learned was by training amiibo! If you have fun training them and doing things you never knew you could do then congratulations! If you find training them to be a total slog or just give up halfway and let the cpu train them then the character clearly isn't for you!

0:53 "Pick a top tier" Doesn't really help me since I want to get better at the game so I can do cool stuff and understand characters more, not necessarily win more. If a character is doing everything for me, it makes me feel like I'm not even playing the game. 2:20 "How common a character is" I have no strong feelings one way or the other. They are both fun in their own way. 3:45 "find a character you mesh with" I grew up playing lots of video games, which some games will prioritize certain playstyles over others. So I ended up learning, adapting, and then appreciating all playstyles in their own way. So I pretty much mesh with all the characters in the game. 4:48 "people ask 'who should I play' first answer who is fun, play until you figure it out. Or pick top 20." 6:29 Clip of SQ saying he hates it when people say "it's not the character, it's just the player is godlike" because the player should be godlike. I'm trying to be godlike, that's while I'm trying to stick to a main in the first place! It's just hard to pick and stick with that character in a way that doesn't make me want to quit Smash since the reason why I picked Smash is because there's so many fun characters in the first place. I've hit a plateau, and I have to start sitting down with characters so I can do the more in-depth things with them. Sooo I'm still struggling with this as always. So here's my personal experience: In Melee it was simple. I didn't know any characters, I just saw swords and was like "cool, swords, lemme use Link & Marth!" before many years going on before finally decided on preferring Marth in Melee. However, I was mainly playing against CPUs at the time, and those CPUs in Melee were not humanlike at all, so you had to fight them differently. So despite having around 2000 hours in Melee, it wasn't anything like playing future smashes, or playing humans. 64 and Brawl I didn't play long enough to know. It would've been Meta Knight though since he was the singular character I wanted in Smash the most, and his moveset was so dang fun in Brawl. Sadly, his options got heavily nerfed/removed so he's extremely linear now in Smash 4 + Ultimate, and not so versatile. Still like his moveset because now it's the opposite thing where it's like improving at that up air combo is like honing my sword skills. It's one simple thing, but it's so satisfying when you get the subtleties down. For some reason it's one of the hardest combos despite using the same move over and over. Ryu and Kazuya are easy mode to combo with compared to Meta Knight and it just baffles me. Smash 4 I never had a main I could decide on. Link & Samus helped me early Smash 4 to get used to the game. Tried lots of new characters. Tried to force myself to solo main Meta Knight and Lucario in the late game, but this led me to quit a few times. The stress of wanting to play other characters to practice with them, alongside wanting to play other games, and stuff going on IRL, was just too much. So at one point I was trying the 100 matches per character challenge since it was a long time with each character, but short enough to get to a new character at a decent rate. Found that most characters I felt competent with around 50 matches, but some of the more complex ones took around 75 matches, simpler ones were either instant, or took about 25 matches. That's just feeling competent with, never mind trying to add tons of subtleties of combos and movement unique to each character that is required to feel like you've "mastered" a character. I don't know how many thousands of hours I have in Smash 4, but I never did find a main I was satisfied with there, which causes me to panic about who I might main in Ultimate. Ultimate I just cannot decide on a character at all. From as speedy and oppressive as Sheik, to Slow and read heavy as Ganondorf. Small characters as small as Pichu, or as big as Ridley Projectile "spam" like Snake & Links or characters with no projectiles at all like Captain Falcon & Sonic Long range like Sephiroth & Belmonts, or short range like Marios & Yoshi Or if they are a character that is just a balance of everything like the Pits, Lucario and Wolf. It's just they are all fun in their own way, it's just so hard to pick one over another, much less stick with one. Like these are some characters I learned lessons from that help me limit my options for who I play: Shulk & Ice Climbers - I won't be able to play 8+ hours everyday. No lab monsters for me thank you. Peach & Daisy - I don't want to spam my controller to play the game, I'd like to keep my hands in tact so I can keep playing games in the future thank you. Also, fast fingers when playing a game isn't really impressive to me. That said, I was shocked when I accidentally did a 60% combo with them after getting them when playing random. Character is friggin nuts I swear. Wario - While he's funny as heck and I like seeing other people play him. I don't want my main to being a smelly jerk. Unfortunately not a robot, so I am not immune to feeling emotions based on the aesthetic of a character. =p Luigi & Bayonetta - Cutscene combos the character. Either just do the damage, or let me get to the part where I can interact with my opponent again. Ness & King K. Rool - I do terrible, terrible things with these characters... and I get away with it too! It makes me feel like a scrub that doesn't want to get better. Min Min - Playing, fighting, or spectating, she is so boring. Same moves with no variation other than timing, and forcing the opponent to play in a specific way so don't get to see the opponent do cool things either. Fills a niche and I can enjoy the niche that she has, but I need more than that niche if I want to do anything else. Zelda & Robin - Fun casually, but gosh dang they are incredibly boring and basic for competitive play (yes I know they are a few cool combos, but in general it's basic). They helped me realize that some characters I prefer to play only casually. Currently Ultimate says I have 700 hours of Playtime, but I dunno if that counts training mode since most of my time is spent there since I usually play while doing something else so I can't commit to a full on match all the time. Some friends have told me it's okay to just main "random" and be casual, but I'm stubborn sometimes. Other fighting games I usually don't have a choice in the matter. Either because no one is interesting, or because there's only one character I want to main. Like Rivals of Aether I love Elliana to death (Clairen [Oh hi Marth] and Sylvanos only ones that come anywhere remotely close). Snek in Mek that has range options but a few combos up close, often playing with the stuff that is set up around the map, among the fastest in the air yet being one of the heaviest so I get to see my opponent's combos, a meter that helps go from fast hits to a strong finisher, and one of the few characters with a grab.
