I just gravitated toward the character that felt the most fun and natural, and to my surprise, Yoshi connected with me first for that reason. He’s super strong and not terribly technical to play. Olimar was also my main for a while because I did like that he was more technical, and I also liked the idea of kicking people’s ass with a little dweeb character. I went to a local tourney and in the first round when I picked Olimar people scoffed “Olimar?!” and then I won and shut them up.

I main Banjo & Kazooie because their confirmation was one of the best things that ever happened to me when my mental state was at its worst. When I was a kid, we got the Banjo-Kazooie promotional video in the mail narrated by Jon Lovitz and I had really wanted the game, so Dad got it for me for my birthday. I got it through a scavenger hunt, with the game wrapped in Disney’s Hercules wrapping paper. Dad passed away in 2004. On June 11th, 2016 was the day my grandpa passed away. This would’ve come and gone as a part of life, except it wasn’t really as much that loss as much as it was because a whole lot of horrible shit was going down where I lived, so it felt like I was suffocating in sadness. Couldn’t even play Smash well and started drinking in the daytime. Hated my job, tried getting into competitive Smash but couldn’t stop going into blind rages in public, frustrated with not being able to get past Round 1. Then, finally, June 11th, 2019, three years since it all hit the fan, was Nintendo’s E3. Started off slow at first. DQ Hero’s trailer was pretty cool, even if no one really wanted him as a character from my own region, I knew he was hugely requested by the Japanese fanbase, and since we pretty much got characters like Ridley who were demanded by us Westerners, it was only fair. Rest of the Direct was slow, half an hour of Fire Emblem Three Houses and shovelware nobody cared about, plus games already released. Right when it looked like the end, on came a familiar clip sequence of heroes and villains facing off, like the one seen at the start of K. Rool’s trailer. Then, we get DK, Diddy, and K. Rool snoozing together, and I was thinking it would be the final boss of Tropical Freeze as a character or something, then the Jiggy bounced across the room, and I screamed with joy. By the end of Banjo’s trailer, I was sobbing. It was like Dad was telling me things were going to be okay, and I’ve been a Banjo main ever since. Really wanted him in so bad. That, and the pandemic pretty much gave me more space and time to understand myself. I now work a job I like that pays better and feels better, and I’m no longer a raging fat dude. I’m trying to channel my anger, since shouting isn’t only immature, but it can put your vocal cords out of commission for two weeks.

My transition through the five mains I’ve played in two smash games: Little Mac (not ironically, I was a casual, ok?), Corrin (no longer a casual, I just found Dragon Lunge a fun move), Zelda (my first main in Ultimate, but now I don’t have any confidence with my Zelda gameplay), Terry (the first character to truly click with me, Terry is fun and easy to combo with, perfect for someone with no tech skill), and finally my current main; Palutena (speaking of easy to combo with, as my playstyle developed, I stopped using Palu as a secondary and decided to start maining her)

I main pit, for multiple reasons. 1. He was the first character I ever saw in Brawl, my first smash game. Bla bla personal things bla bla, basically just nostalgia. 2. There arent a ton of pit mains, or at least there didnt used to be. Thats always fun 3. I resonate with his personality, and I’m super into greek mythology 4. Kid Icarus is a phenomenal series, even though I found it after Brawl because of Pit 5. I love that he’s honest, since I never really want my opponent to be pissed off that they lost for reasons like bullshit characters or mechanics. I want them to feel like I outplayed them, and that their handshake is honest. Basically pit gang forever

Honestly, I see some of myself in Cloud. A bit cold of an exterior to those who don't know me well, but my friends say that I'm a good person thanks to them being shown my real colours.
