Ask This Old House landscape contractor Jenn Nawada travels to Washington D.C. to help a homeowner select and plant a cherry tree for his house.

Time: 2-3 hours
Cost: $100
Skill Level: Beginner
Tools:
Shovel [amzn.to/2J9A1Df]
Hand rake [amzn.to/39eSvNo]
Canvas tarp [amzn.to/2UbTkSB]
Hose [amzn.to/2UIN44b]
Shopping List:
Cherry Tree [amzn.to/2wmtDpG]
Compost [amzn.to/2xUCb7l]
Mulch [amzn.to/2J7HuTc]
Steps:
1. Start by identifying a good location for the tree, keeping in mind that it will grow and get larger.
2. Trace the outside of the bucket using the shovel, then pull the tree out of the way to dig. Leave space on the outside of the bucket so that the hole ends up being about twice as wide as the tree.
3. Dig the hole for the tree about as deep as the pot. Be sure to set the grass on top aside so it doesn’t end up in the backfill pile. It helps to place the soil and the grass on a tarp to prevent damage to the lawn.
4. Loosen up some of the soil at the bottom of the hole and mix in some compost.
5. Pull the tree out of the bucket and place it in the hole.
6. Gently break up the roots of the tree using a hand rake.
7. Rotate the tree and orient it in the desired position.
8. Mix more of the compost in with the soil that was originally dug out of the hole. Use this mix to backfill the tree. Be sure to keep the flare of the tree above the soil line.
9. Soak the tree with water.
10. Cover the base of the tree with a layer of mulch to help keep the roots moist and prevent weeds.
Resources:
Jenn planted a Yoshino cherry [amzn.to/2wmtDpG], which grows best in Hardiness Zones 5-8 [planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/P...] and can be purchased from a nursery or garden center.

That's really close to that fence. I hope the neighbor likes that tree. In a few years he'll be raking up almost half the leaves that fall from it.

These are indeed lovely trees, however, they get huge. Huge. The one in this video is far too close to the fence. It will overhang into the neighbors yard by about a third. This is the cycle of a yoshino cherry: Bloom. Lovely. Blooms shed like pink snow. After petals are gone, bloom stems fall all over. Berries come, some fall, most ripen. Birds eat them and poop berry colored poop. All the berries that fell off will seed. Mowing reduces this, but any beds nearby, birds will take seeds to. How do I know this? I have 2 quite large trees in my yard. One is about 20 feet from my house. Mistake. Oh...final 'need to know' issue. Roots. They put out massive roots. Massive. they will grow right out of the ground if you ever have drought like weather. The roots will take over an area as large or larger than the leaf canopy. Think twice about this tree. There are better choices. In the yard in the video, in the area proposed, a dwarf flowering cherry of some type would be better, or perhaps a dwarf ornamental plum. Not a Yoshino.

Yes my parents had one for years and after the tree died they are still trying to get the roots up, its a mess. You'd think I'd have learned but no I just bought one. However we have a huge garden so I plan on planting far away from the house, driveway and road!

Totally agree with you! And that’s what Japanese garden experts would suggest too. May I ask how and where to look for a dwarf weeping cherry tree? And can we plant it in a pot to control the root to destroy house foundation? Thanks

In Japan, most of flowering cherry tree are not recommended for back yard garden ( too close to house) , because of it’s massive roots, etc. That’s why you almost only see them in public spaces such parks, along the river,etc.

They graft them on a tree type with less root vigour which also keeps the tree smaller. I have several and there are no issues at all. It’s not an oak tree!

@Joe Kinchicken Is that what somebody accused you of being? Well, no need to project your insecurities or social awkwardness on others. Seek therapy to work out your issues, because seriously when you make weird replies to innocuous comments that have nothing to do with you, you seem needy for attention.

What they don't point out is that half the canopy will be over the neighbors yard. And if they are like most neighbors that means they won't like all those flower pettals covering their yard. Lot of clean up with cherry trees. And like most neighbors after the first big clean up they will start cutting all the limbs that cross into their yard. Which most places allow by law. And that's where the fued begins. Got to think ahead with landscaping in a neighborhood.

@galehess6676
@galehess6676 Жыл бұрын
1. Tree needs the graft an inch above grade, not several inches, which will cause suckers (too deep is a major problem, too). 2. Tree CANNOT fit in this yard, not even close, and can cause several problems as time passes. If intentional, maybe cut it down in 10 years...after planting it offset of center by 5-8', so another tree can be placed in the reciprocal offset spot when the time comes, or center it and then plant ground cover there and no replacement tree. This video perpetuates the poor spacing of most trees and shrubs in this country (too close to houses and foundations, fences/posts that will heave, neighbors, other trees, etc.). Little known fact: wrapping pipes in fine copper mesh prevents root penetration, without harming the tree! I would bank they've planted about 3 trees, ever. They did get a few things close to right, but it's not that darn hard to read about how wide a tree will get, or to prune things to stay medium-sized and fit the space confines. Get a trained, professional landscaper to give you advice before you waste time, money and tree lives, or read. I've planted hundreds, trained with the 2nd best landscaping school, etc. Don't be afraid to plop it in there, just know you may make a mistake, and some mistakes are easily avoidable. Get a sharp lopper and pruner... water before it's too dry (for the first 6 months), fertilize lightly early spring/fall, have fun, plant many things.

Sherri Ianiro How else to lift the tree? By the hand?? 😧 That is how you are supposed to take a tree out of a pot; by grabbing the base of the trunk and pulling it out (hopefully you have a helper to put the pot in the opposite direction for you).
@sherriianiro747
@sherriianiro747 4 жыл бұрын
@@user2144 After you lift it from the pot you are supposed to quickly grab ahold of the bottom with your other hand or have a helper so that the root flare does not separate or tear from the weight of the potted material which is quite heavy - per advice from arborist & I am not sure but it was either Roger on TOH or the Victory Garden show (don't remember which - maybe both) showed to do it this way too!
