As a an American I have to say that British people speak so beautifully and proper no matter what ethnicity. It is a pleasure to listen to compared to some of the butchery of the english language in the states. Thanks for such a delightful and informative video. I just received a box of roots from Burpees and ready to years of harvests.

I always leave the tops on through the winter. I live in a cold northern area in Canada. The dried fronds catch the snow which provides insulation through the winter. In the spring when the first spears are emerging I pull out the old tops to give the spears room to push up. I have had the same patch for 40 years.

If you have enough soil to grow Asparagus it is best to plant them in good drainage soil and as they start to emerge ,hill them higher ,just like Potatoes get hilled if they start to show above ground . In Germany they keep adding soil to the existing trenched Asparagus I believe they use a Tractor and Plow to do this because of the huge size of their Fields but they also cover the Asparagus with sheets of Tarpaulin or the like ! I saw this in Germany in May of 2013 by just observing this from a Train that I was traveling in . The idea of covering the Asparagus with Tarpaulin or Sheets is to stop them from turning Green ! It must be quite a process and time consuming effort to Commercially grow this White Asparagus but it is worth it in the long run ! I was never one for any Asparagus and here in Australia we only get the green shoots in Jars and fresh from the Green Grocer ! I have never seen White Asparagus in Australia but it is available but mainly for the Upper Crust High Society Restaurants . White Asparagus prepared and Cooked properly is absolutely Yummy !My wifey and I found that out in May 2013 . We were both hooked on the Creamy White Asparagus Soup and as a Side Dish with the Main Meal when we tasted it in Germany ! I DO NOT eat Green Asparagus anymore , just waiting till I can find some white one . They don't call it " White Gold " for nothing in Germany in their Asparagus Season ! Here in Australia the season for this Asparagus is from September till January . I Googled it to find that out ! Not very Commercially based though ! The talk is though that Tasmania has the Ideal Soil Conditions for it !

Sheltered sunny location, how much shade should/can they get? Our best sheltered spot gets shade for about 6 hours during the summer from about dinnertime on (it's the time it blocks out the sun when we eat dinner on our deck!).

They really thrive in a sunny spot with shelter from winds. However Asparagus can be grown in shadier conditions and often do surprisingly well. I would definiteley give it a try!

Would you recomend planting asparagus in or over a natural spring?
@thompsonmorgan
@thompsonmorgan 9 жыл бұрын
Hi William. Asparagus really does need very good drainage so planting in a natural spring wouldn't be ideal. Water logged soil is likely to cause the crown to rot. Personally, I wouldn't risk planting them in these conditions.

Huallacanes Mambo Try to be patient. They need to establish their root system first as this will be needed in order to support any growth above ground. I would wexpect that you will see some growth in the next month or so.

Hey , whittle4u . If any of you understand the German Language , you needto watch their KZfaq Videos on how they grow Asparagus . It is white . The Beds are Hilled and covered with White Plastic . I had White Asparagus with a White Sauce as a side dish with my main meal in a Restaurant in Germany in May 2013 . I will never go back to eating that Green Asparagus . The White one Tastes Phenomenal . It tastes a Hell of a lot better than the Green one ever did . Try it . Check it out , even if you Do Not understand the German Language, just watch the Video . " Spargel - Anbau bis zur Ernte ". Or something like that .

Could you let me know how many crowns I should plant for a four person family? Thought they need to be harvested at the right time, so too many could be a problem I am guessing.
@thompsonmorgan
@thompsonmorgan 3 жыл бұрын
The shoots will come up sporadically so you can harvest them as and when they are ready. I would think that 12 plants would be plenty, but it does really depend on how much you like asparagus!

Can u plant in raise beds and buckets?
@thompsonmorgan

You can plant them in pots - but this will severely shorten the life of the plant and crops will be smaller. If it was a large raised bed then this would ok.

I am wanting to plant asparagus in my garden with other veggies. However I have been told that you need a special place in the garden because they spread like crazy. Is this true and can you manage them in simple rows like you displayed.
@thompsonmorgan
@thompsonmorgan 7 жыл бұрын
They wont spread like crazy but it is worth selecting your site carefully as they will need a permanent position that wont be disturbed for many years. An established aparagus bed can last for up to 20 years so you need to be happy with its location as it will be there for a very long time!

Thanks a lot, and one more question, as I understood from video harvesting period is from April to June, my question is if it possibly to make harvesting period longer or get second period in year.
@thompsonmorgan
@thompsonmorgan 7 жыл бұрын
Its best not to extend harvesting beyond this period as you will deplete the plants energy which will affect your crop in the following year. The plant needs to have sufficient time in a growing season to develop stems and build up its energy reserves before the autumn.

What about growing asparagus from seeds?
@thompsonmorgan
@thompsonmorgan 7 жыл бұрын
Asparagus is traditionally grown from crowns as they are slow to get going - why make them even slower by starting from scratch?
@Pocono_Pits
@Pocono_Pits 6 жыл бұрын
Starting them from seed is easy. They should be started by this time of year (for where I am atleast) I start them in regular seed starting trays. They need to stay in those trays and outdoors until later in the fall when I can plant them in their final bed. I would not start them directly in the ground because they can be very finicky to germinate. My asparagus seeds germinate best when very heavily soaked with water. They are wetland crops originally so they dont need to be as well drained as a lot of people think.

what can be done about asparagus beetles?
@thompsonmorgan
@thompsonmorgan 7 жыл бұрын
Both the adult and larvae of Asparagus Beetle will eat the foliage and stems of asparagus. Keep an eye out from Spring and pick them off of the plants as you see them, and destroy them. At the end of the year once the stems have died back they should be removed and burnt to kill off any overwintering beetles.
@jewellevy
@jewellevy 6 жыл бұрын
What do I do the second year and onward when all the dirt is up to the top?
@thompsonmorgan
@thompsonmorgan 6 жыл бұрын
1. Weed asparagus beds by hand as the shallow roots may be damaged by hoeing. 2. Water regularly during hot periods, to prevent them from drying out. 3. In autumn cut back the yellowing foliage and mulch the crowns with well rotted manure to protect them from frost. 4. Feed with a general fertiliser each March. Also when growing asparagus, resist the temptation to harvest the spears during their first season, but instead allow the plants to develop foliage. A limited crop of spears may be harvested in the second year during April and May when they reach 15cm (6") tall. By the third year, the crop can be fully harvested. It is recommended to stop cutting from the end of May to allow the shoots to develop into foliage. Later harvests can be made but risk weakening the plant.

I was sure I'd done this correctly but when my asparagus came up they seemed short and stunted. The ground is fertile and there is plenty of light and they were given the right amount of water? Me and my husband eat them for breakfast most mornings, and I wanted to be able to stop buying them from the shop
@thompsonmorgan

Dont give up just yet. You may not have done anything wrong! It has been a very tricky spring for plant growth with consistently fluctuating temperatures, little rainfall and late frosts. Your plants may be simply be responding to the poor growing conditions this season and will probably come through as normal stems next year.

Hello. Asparagus are traditionally planted on ridges to improve drainage but as the soil is then mounded up on top of them they are probably planted deeper then they might appear at first glance. Some people do prefer to plant them deeper but ultimately they will work their way up through the soil to their prefered level anyway.

whittle4u I read that planting them deep produces larger spears while shallow planting produces numerous but smaller spears. Here in Sydney, the only option is shallow planting as the soil is solid clay 20cm down.
