Melissa K. Norris - Modern Homesteading Enjoyed you videos and want to comment on raspberries. Purchasing barefoot canes from a drugstore sale and not knowing much about them, I did everything wrong. We got a few berries next summer but it is now mid October and they are really full of fruit. Looking forward to your pruning video and hopefully how to get rid of grass around them. Would laying black plastic under the vines hurt the plants? Thank you, Janet

Hi Melissa, I Started My Berry Rows Last Year, Many Are Partly Seeded as Well as Plants. I Did Have the Opportunity To Dig Up Some Thimbleberry Plants at an Acquaintances House Last Fall and Put Somewhere Between 75 and 100 Plants Into Their Own Row. I Can Hardly Wait to Find Out What Transplant Success I Will Have. Loved the Video, Thank You Very Much. Maine.

I bought 2 raspberry canes this year but haven't had a chance to permanently plant them yet. I put them in a pot with some soil but they haven't done anything at all and still look dead. Maybe I need to start over next year or late this year and have a spot ready for them and order more than two.

I have been growing raspberries for 15 years. Raspberries do spread. You will find over time they will send out suckers plants. Also make sure they get plenty of water when it gets hot or you will have small berries. Nothing better then fresh ones off bushes. I also freeze some berries to use in pancakes in the winter. Also good in muffins.

My love for gardening started when i was little, then school and growing up happened and it all got forgotten. But the fire was lit again 2 years ago when i got married and we bought our first home. But then again work got in the way. But now i'm blessed with not being able to work due to this virus locking everything down. I am outside in our garden everyday, leveling out our lawn, removing weeds, edging, planting, making compostbins, raised vegetablebeds, waterfeatures and now i am getting some plumtrees, planting paspberries, ruhbarb, strawberries, vegetables and experimenting with corn in our arctic inviroment. Lovely video, great information.

We have a tiny(!), productive city property that we've managed to plant with 4 varieties of raspberry, 3 blueberry bushes, 2 varieties of thornless blackberry, a strawberry patch, 1 each apple, plum, pear and peach trees plus two 6 x 12 raised beds. Many flower varieties invite pollinators and birds. Our yard is well manicured yet very productive and we truly love it! My berries are in bloom and setting fruit so enjoying the bounty is short weeks away.

This is great thank you! I will be watching your trellising video next. I found raspberries next to our shed last summer but they were buried behind weeds and overgrown shrubs, so we just cleared all that. I want to also plant more this year. We are a family of 8 so now I know I need about 22 canes wow! We also have black berries, Elderberry, about 40 large apple and pear trees, 2 peach trees, and 5 cherry trees that I need to learn about because they only produce tiny cherries. If you know about cherry trees please do a video on how to trim and care for them.

Hi Melissa! We recently moved back to our farm in Tennessee and are starting over with fruit trees, etc. We have raspberries and thornless blackberries we brought with us from out old house. We have cherry & pears that are from when we lived here before, the pears are very fruitful! We've added figs, got some fruit last year, patio peaches, dwarf peaches, apples, pecans, plums and more cherry trees, plus elderberry bushes. I just ordered 2 pomegranate trees also. More to come in the fall! Thanks for the great videos

Thanks Melissa. Great Video. I have inherited a 2 acre field ( south east of Ireland in a small river valley) and am planning to grow some raspberries in it. 11 plants supplies a family of 4 for a season is a good yield. The field is east facing and on a slight slope so hopefully drainage should be ok. I am thinking of planting raspberries at the highest elevation and then apple and plum trees towards the lower elevation. See how it goes. This video is very encouraging,

I would love to visit Ireland someday! I live in America, Missouri to be exact. My area is the Southwest part of the state so we are what’s called the “Ozarks.” Lots of hills, lakes, several small bodies of water so it’s beautiful around here. However, it’s nothing compared to your living environment! I wanted to suggest container growing because we have harsh winters out here. Sometimes our October can feel like the perfectly mild spring weather comparable to tropics yet sometimes we can have a super hot September and BOOM we are already facing hard frosts in October with highs barely reaching the low 40s. Then most of November is highs in the 70s or barely reaching mid 60s with “abnormally high” temps for the year. But we can also already have had several inches of snow/ice. It’s unpredictable so I’ve found container gardening to be my friend. I can bring in all of these awesome plants and winter them where they stay mostly dormant yet still thrive. Come early spring these cold hardy plants come back to life! So, long story short, considering keeping some of your plants in large containers and you’ll learn just how you can truly yield the benefits of mature fruits and plentiful harvest!

I put out two thornless Blackberry plants last fall that I got from Walmart and checked on them just today. They are going to town! They are a creeper and have set several shoots burrowing in the sod. I`m going to leave them be as they seem to like their surroundings. I also planted a regular blackberry in the backyard and the only reason I can find it is I planted a blue plastic stake by it. LOTS of water at the end of my yard. Didn`t know about the root rotting thing. Makes sense.

I'm in SoCal, I wish we could grow cherries! We tried the low chill varieties, but they immediately got canker.😞 We also grow a Mission fig, a Meyer and Pink Lemonade lemon, a kumquat, a blood orange, a tangerine, a Thornless lime (that isn't thornless😑), a passion fruit, three varieties of avocado, three apricots, two peaches, three Dorset apple and one Fuji apple, a Kiefer pear, a Cavendish banana, a mango, a Manzanilla Olive, strawberries, a Thornless boysenberry, a blackberry, and Baba raspberries. I'd love another variety of fig, and pear, besides a plum and almond tree next. We fit all of that fruit and our veggie garden on a 6000sqft. lot (minus the house and garage), thanks to dwarf varieties, and the practice of espalier, and other pruning techniques for standard trees. I used to live in Spokane and Cheney as a girl, if I ever wanted to live in snow again, then I'd get myself right back there!😉 But I'd miss my warm weather fruits, and I don't do well with container plants.😑

Had a few fruit here and there. But hardly grown. mostly just staying the same in size due to dying and regrowth. How often do they need watering? And how yo u check for soil drainage? They are in full sun. Advice so much appreciated! 😁

Thanks this helps. But the only difference i will be planting but i will be using wood chips. I make a combination of wood chips, leaves, grass clippings, brush, chipped up in an even mixture placed 8-12 inches thick on top of the ground over the living grass and sod where i want the berries. Then it kills the existing sod like the plastic ideal you have, but not kill the microbes and fungi like the plastic does. A year or two later you just take and rake the wood chips aside where you want to plant berries, the ground will be loose and a little moist from the wood bark layer on top, just plant the berries in the ground. I suspect it will be ok that there might be a moist layer in/from the wood bark, but i think the berries will still be fine because they can send roots wherever it wants them, if they don't like that moist layer then they will send more below it instead, etc... This way the ground is already living with microbes and fungi, the mulch mixture on top of the ground supports all the life in the ground. Then after that layer of mulch begins to look all broken down after 3-5 years, add another 12 inch layer of wood chip mixture, it will keep feeding the life in the ground for the berries. It will also regulate moisture better, that moist layer is only where the woodchips meet the ground, but it has it if it needs it, fungi and microbes need it. And if the berries need it the fungi will probably deliver it as needed if the berries are getting low on water, and if there is too much the fungi will probably pump it around to absorb into the things that need it and away from things that have enough, it will equal it out and make perfect environment for the life in the ground..

Great video Melissa! You probably should improve the audio somewhat. I hear what you say, but there are moments when you move away from the camera your voice becomes more distant. Nevertheless, your message is clear enough for followers to learn your craft. Thanks for your teachings.

Is it ok to plant raspberries on a hill? Or will the water drain too much?

Are you asking due to pruning questions? If they're growing just let them be this year and then prune to the variety in winter (everbearing vs summer/June bearing)

Just let them grow this year. Once they produce fruit if you get a second wave un August/September then you'll know they're everbearing/Autumn bearing and will prune to that. In the meantime just let them grow

Great video but one thing. When you plant you should lay your root down lengthwise instead of in a straight hole

@@MelissaKNorris well it is virtually impossible to change my soil. I add mulch and manure, but my soil is lime stone, so adding acid won't change the pH.
