I played guitar for years relying on chord diagrams to play anything. Started playing piano last year and finally began to understand just how chords are built. It’s absolutely liberating undersatanding that. Wish I’d done it years ago.

Where were your videos 17 years ago? Wait...KZfaq just started then. Man, had i had access to today's videos when i was a teenager, i feel like I'd be much farther along. Just glad to find evenly paced tutorials in my adult years. Not the first video of yours I've seen, but I'm jumping into triads right now (apparently I've been playing them for years already to some degree) so I'm glad to have found this one!

IF you recall last week I thanked you for making CAGED make sense to me finally, and you said chords could be played anywhere? This video before the CAGED one would NAIL it for many! You made these shapes anywhere on the neck make sense... I had no clue how to use CAGED as a road map to play these anywhere! I'm just getting into the video now and hoping there is more I can learn and pick up from that of what I already knew. :) Keep these up bro!

Nice lesson! In my experience with the CAGED system I have found the “D” shape to be almost impossible “For Me” and my extra wide hands to achieve. That is unless I just play that “D” shape as a triad on the high “E”, “B” and “G” strings only as opposed to trying to barre the chord with my index finger! After years of wondering, I now learned what is meant by the term “Inversion” love it when I learn something new that has driven me nuts previously!! I’m going to watch this over and over again!! Thanks Brian!

@jeremyacton45693 жыл бұрын
This was my approach too , but I just kept it to the Emaj and Aminor :-D open chord shapes in the open position to start with (an easy beginner's jump) , and these forms are the skeletion of how I use the neck, . I also omit the low root, and play rootless chords, with the lowest note in the chord being the 5th for super easy shapes. The 7th, min7th, maj7 etc variations follow, often also with a half barre omitting the root note. . These basic Emaj and Aminor shapes, with the root note, also give power chords on the lowest 3 strings ie Root -5 -Octave. I am just a songwriter and do basic covers, so that is enough for me, but I am also adding the D shape and variations up the neck for funky playing. I chose to ignore the C and G open shapes as they are the hardest to play as barres on the neck and if you can find an easy chord, why play a difficult chord? I also never play those jazzy moveable chords that need me to skip a string in the middle of a chord fingering. and that's how it rolls for me. Thanks for the cool lesson. .

I always had problems understanding that famous cage system , now because of you it's very clear, just need to practice it now.Thanks again brother.I started to play only this past summer and i love it, but i'm not using chords at all , , i just know my notes on the fret board by just following h.step and f. step,i put a backing track on ,and i do the melody note by note ,and its going great up and down the fretboard ,but now i will practice my chords from your lessons and add some when i feel and hear that its sonds good.

Brian, this is an area that I have a great interest in because I want to be able to use more of the CAGED chords for playing up the neck. I use the E, Em, A, and Am shapes as barre chords very easily but need to learn how to use the other shapes. Of course, I don't want to have to use the full D, G, or C shapes. What you talk about in your video logically makes sense to me. The issue I have is knowing the notes on the fretboard and in the chord. I could probably advance more and/or faster if I had that down.
@donalburns76072 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, I find the circle of 4ths very useful to learn the notes on the guitar, it helps that the notes spell the word bead twice, flat for one side of the circle, that’s 8 notes out of 12 nailed, I hope this makes sense.
@neilmartin992 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I cheat on the G shape all the time and just play the bottom 4 strings. So for instance, I basically bar the bottom 4 strings and then play the root (1) 4 frets down on the high e string with my pinky finger. It sounds beautiful. Not sure if it is correct but nobody has ever complained. ; )

I’m using about half of the content of 3 of your videos here. I get it, but I’ll be putting it into my daily routine as I’m kinda combining a couple methods. Writing them out seems to help. My wife is happy because she knows where to find me. The reason it took until my 60s to get to this is because it took that long to develop a strong technique. (I’m a lefty who plays right handed and it’s more difficult for me anyway.) I just wish I had more than 6 hours a day. Oh yeah Brian, I would like to see the circle of 5ths tattoo you have.

Very good basic lesson. I wish people wanting to play the guitar would learn the fretboard, which you give a good lesson on, otherwise they are not going to be able to play this triads automatically. Just ten minuits a day playing all the notes in their six positions across the fretboard would do it so it goes into muscle memory,yet people seem not to want to practice the basics and then wonder why they cant play more complex stuff.
@lentas082 жыл бұрын
What I mean is write down A 5-12-7=2 10-5 etc and same for B etc, play each note as you go up and down, use your ear to make sure they are in unison. The when you have it automatically do the same for the sharps/ flats. Every day 15mins, in a month you will have the keyboard in muscle memory. Not to much to ask.

This is gold!! You have the skill to really explain this really clear.. Thanx !! BTW.. I'm having trouble playing those major chords with te root on the A string. do you have any tips on that?
@zombieguitar3 жыл бұрын
Well when you play a minor chord in the A-shape, it becomes easy. Major chords in the A-shape are tough. As long as you have the 1, 3 and 5 in there though, you are good. So you can either eliminate the high E-string if you want, or you can play just the notes on the G, B and high E-string if you want. Both options will still result in a major chord using the same starting shape 😀

I know you're too busy for at least 2 weeks, but hey please help me with the issue I've brought to you down here (whenever you're free of course:) Here's the issue: I was trying to build minor chords using 1,b3,5 method you just mentioned in your video, if I use minor scale notes for example A natural minor ABCDEFGA, I have to take 1,3,5 instead of 1,b3,5 Why?! Should I only build chords out of Major scales? Even minor chords must be built out of Major scales?!
@zombieguitar2 жыл бұрын
Because how do you know if that minor chord came from the natural minor scale, harmonic minor scale, melodic minor scale, Dorian scale, etc...? You don't. That is why the major scale is used as "the one" from which all other scales and chords are derived from 😁
