Thank you guys for tuning in to Simply Dhol. This video will be YOUR guide to learning how to play the dhol!
When I initially started learning dhol, there were virtually no resources available, either by book or videos to learn the instrument. The way to learn back then was to have a student/master relation. It was like that for many years and to a certain extent, it’s still the same today because it’s difficult to distinguish the tone of a certain strike by just reading. You often need to hear the sound before replicating what is being played.
Dhol is a folk instrument and from the time that it came into existence to now, a lot of stuff got lost. That is why you don’t see too much material out there on the origin of the drum or how it is supposed to be played. The goal of this material is not to seek the origins of the dhol, but to place it into today's perspective. In simplest of terms, we are going to look at the dhol as a musical instrument. In order to ground the material, we are going to look at the dhol as a “double-headed drum” rooting out of Punjab and how you commonly see it being played.

The Dhol is one of the most captivating instruments ever. Been crazy about dance and music and keen to pick this up…….I’ve ordered for one from Amazon India and as there’s limited choice went in for the one with the most reviews Your video is so in depth and covers so many features about the bar measures, the various rhythms and the mention to take the practices slow. So excited to start this journey with your inputs. Am sure scores of people have benefited from your advice. Thanks again 🙌🙌

@@ManvirHothi Luddi is a beat that is played to represent happiness that is what I have learnt watching TED talk on Dhol. Definitely not chaal 1.
@ManvirHothi
@ManvirHothi 3 жыл бұрын
@@vinitsharma1402 There’s too many inaccuracies in these Tedhtalks online, I would take them with a grain of salt. Luddi is a celebratory dance and the rhythm that is played is also referred to as Luddi, presently known as Chaal. Although one can argue that Chaal is the name of the movement. Like the etymology of any word, new words are coined daily and what was formerly referred to as luddi is now Chaal. When you refer to luddi, you are referring to Chaal 1. Any deviation from this can be considered a variation

My dhol sound different then your dhol. I tuned it to. How I do it?
@ManvirHothi
@ManvirHothi 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jesse, that depends on a lot of factors. For example, what skins you're using on either side of the drum, whether or not those skins have been worked in, the quality of the wood/dhol, but most importantly, how you tuned the dhol. Each dhol is going to have its own unique sound. If you find the dhol sounding low pitched, tighten the respective side, and if you find it too high pitched or the sound "dying," chances are that you over tightened. You can use apps that are typically used to tune snare heads on the drumkit to ensure that you have a relatively consistent note across each hook. Overtime, you will develop an ear for tuning
