Personally I have had a lot of success with this method. In addition, I have seen dozens of my drum students over the years report back with positive results regarding an elimination of their back pain while drumming...
Good luck and all the best!!!...

Nice job Brother, cool that you had a novel technique to share w us! As a dual drum- lifer and spinal trauma sufferer, I thank you. One interesting thought: I've had a lot of relief/much better kit experience since buying a 4 legged AHEAD "spinal glide" throne, which has the two cushion halves w a ~1 inch gap down the middle, thus taking any and all pressure off your tailbone and spine. I can sit at the kit for hours now. Although, the towel thing is almost the opposite of this as it adds a spinal contact (but for support/bracing). Just ruminating on these two concepts, no real question or anything.

DRUMMERS!! Use a backrest lowered all the way down to support your lower back!! lean back into it where your back is straight up and down, when you play, and that should eliminate all your back pains and problems!! I personally use the Roc and Soc hydraulic shock absorber, motorcycle seat style with the backrest!!

2010 camaro, I'm 69 yo, with spinal issues galore from Father Time Slapping me because I never paid the proper attention to my malady of a 1 inch shorter right leg. That happened when I fractured my thigh playing HS Football in 1966 (15 years old), after the Full body Cast for 3 months came off, Holy Shit moment when the doctor saw that my right leg was 1 inch shorter than the left. I did NOT pay the proper attention to it, nor did the doctor or my parents think to advise that I should have worn a corrective shoe for the rest of my life. Well, I'll tell you that the damage to that has Reared it's Ugly head starting about 15 years later. Now Numerous spinal issues have ruined my life with chronic pain and terrible stiffness that I have to endure for rest of my life. No surgery can fix it. Back to drumming, I didn't play again until 2019 after a 50 Year Hiatus. I love it.... The wifey of 46 years, got me a cheapo kit for Xmas in 2018, to enjoy in retirement (which I finally did in April of this year because of the Back issues/ Misery issues). I upgraded to a PDP Maple Concept 6 piece kit, Used form guitar Center (a bargain), and of course upgraded to Paiste P7 and P8s cymbals. I use a Gibraltar Motor cycle seat throne with a Backrest. That is much improved form the pathetic Throne that came with the Gammon cheapo kit. This throne does feel better, but I'm now looking at a DW 9000 Tractor Seat with Pneumatic lift which is wider (I'm a big Boy at 5' 10" and 217 pounds & lost 1.5 inches in height due to the discs in my back degraded), for $269 , and the backrest is another $60 .... I think I'm going to try it because it has 4 legs for greater stability and the Air Lift for quick adjustments. Moral to my story is: Chronic Pain SUXXXXXXX.... Take care of your self , drink lots of water (I didn't - your back discs are 85% Water and they will try out and deteriorate over time), eat smart ... That's what I try to portray to my 2 married sons (38, & 35) all the time - but they don't listen. PS: I play only recreationally in my Basement studio creted in COVID Hibernation in 2020 to My Music [ basic Rock stuff]: CCR, Petty, Beatles, Stones, Mellencamp, Clapton, Cars, Bad Company, Yardbirds,Talking Heads, Springsteen, British Invasion bands,Sheryl Crow, and Linda Ronstadt {give her a listen.... she is the original DIVA of Country Rock with a terrific Studio Band (some of which became the Eagles). Happy Drumming !!

@@rockyvsrambo82 I tried it this at this weekends gigs....I need to give it a couple more shows I think before giving my final thoughts. It was not a complete silver bullet as I was hoping but it definitely seemed to be a good thing to keep me higher up and help me focus on maintaining good posture. Idk man, I also was looking at some guys talking about more stomach compression while playing is good....ugh what an endless search. I am interviewing a super accomplished drummer tomorrow and will ask if he has any secrets for back pain.

Hey mate. How long have you had back pain for? If its a real ongoing problem in your life, check out the 'Egoscue' method... I suffered chronic pain for 10 years, and this method was the game changer... But, you are right. Core strength is really important for playing drums. ie: Pilates is very good or simply doing planks to engage the core.

I experience fatigue when playing drums on fast tunes, especially with the right foot bass drum. What do you think could assist with this fatigue??

Hi Stuart... Practise with a timer/ stop watch... 1) When you practise exercises, practise for 2-3 minutes without stopping... If this is too much, start with 1 minute and build from there... 2) Also, use a metronome to work on your tempos so you are very in time with your exerices/ beats... 3) Check out my video on 5 bass drum exercises: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z5-lqaeG26nHmXk.html All the best!

Actually, the towel technique I show in this video makes an average throne a great one. In her book, '8 Steps to a Pain Free Back', Esther Gokhale shows us how to sit in a way that puts our bodies in the perfect position to minimize pain. It doesnt matter how great your chair or thrown is, or how expensive it is. If you put your body in a poor position, and you stay playing for hours years on end, your gonna have trouble.
