I appreciate your lessons. This is my first reed instrument, I could not resist purchasing one once I identified the sound in a piece of music. I have a moderate amount of musical experience as I play a number of other instruments, but this is a new and unique challenge. From what I have seen, there is not a whole lot of easy to approach lessons online, even less for those of us unable to read standard music notation (I cannot). Your videos are helping me get on the right course and a great starting tool.

Hey there! Could you recommend a great entry level duduk for a reasonable price? If I'm not mistaken, it sounds like REEDS are the most important thing to look for. Thanks!
@duduklessons72396 жыл бұрын
I would suggest www.dudukworld.com And yes, reeds are the most important component. I would suggest getting a minimum of 3 reeds. You never know when you're going to get a good one.

Hey! I recently bought a duduk and started learning through your videos. i have noticed that when trying to play those bottom 3 notes its extremely hard, theres an immense amount of back pressure stopping me from playing, on the higher notes im fines and have good breath control and such. sometimes i do find the pocket and am able to play the lower notes but i dont know what im doing different then in comparison to when i cant play the lower notes. any advice by chance? Ty in advance
@samuelconnolly3478 ай бұрын
Mine isn't sounding right. Playing along with the video, the first three notes sound good and reasonably in tune. After that, mine is sounding massively out of tune with the video, and not even by a little bit. I tried using the chromatic tuner on my phone. The first note is hovering between A and A#, B is accurate, C# is accurate, then I've got a flat D#, a flat F and sharp G. The octave is very sharp - it's a little sharper than A#. I am keeping all the fingers down that I can, as suggested in the video. Is this intonation completely down to me or is it likely that I have a slightly dodgy instrument?
@robabnawaz3 жыл бұрын
I just tried it out, it really sounds better with this Bagpipe technique,but it is extreme hard to adopt such a fingering.
@DressedForDrowning Жыл бұрын
As I understand, the "empty" fingers close the holes again? Only the hole for the sound to be produces must be open?

Hi Mark, festival thank you for your lessons, I'm right at the beginning and I Bought this nice instruments to learn it. One question that I want to ask is about the reed. Because I bought it for second hand and the reed too. Do you think is better sterilize the reed? If yes, there is a way to do it? Or do you suggest to buy a new brand reed? Thanks
@duduklessons72397 жыл бұрын
I think it is best to buy new reeds.....buying used reeds is sort of like buying a used toothbrush. It'll work...but still. Sterilizing reeds sounds like a very good idea. But I don't know how to do it.

Hi again - I have a question about key: Does the reed or the body determine the key? Can you play a D duduk with any reed, or does it need to be a reed specific for D? Thanks again!
@duduklessons72399 жыл бұрын
Hi Darius, Yes, the reed and duduk should be matched. An A duduk will have quite a large reed. With an E Duduk, it's very tiny. M

Hi Mark, I just got a duduk and have been trying to learn to play for the last week but I can't get a decent sound. Most of the time I'm just blowing air through the duduk but on the occasion I do get a sound out it sounds mostly like a trumpet. Is it my duduk or what am I doing wrong? Thanks for these videos! Much appreciated!
@duduklessons72399 жыл бұрын
JR Matlock Hi JR. It's hard to say what the problem is without seeing your instrument. It could be a bad quality reed, or the reed is opened up too wide. Is it easy to blow lots of air through, but hard to get any kind of a buzz? If so, you may just need to tighten up the bridle and close down the opening a little. If you like you can upload a close up pic of the reed so that I can get a better idea. I know how frustrating it can be!
@theepictallguy9 жыл бұрын
JR Matlock make sure that your reed is not too open / not too closed. Also make sure that the reed is soaked. If no sound is coming out it means that the reed is dry and hence stiff. Soak the reed and then try again.

my duduk playing is a whole tone flat! I have no idea what i am doing wrong, if i put any more pressure on the reed it just closes up. any suggestions?
@clem28674 жыл бұрын
Hi, your reed is too open, adjust it with the ring. You're not supposed to put some pressure with your lips too adjust the opening, it's the role of the ring to do it.

Hi, thanx for this video. just a question...duduk have only one octave?
@dariuskaufmann64199 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark - Thank you for your response. I have a reed question: After playing for a few days, the two parts of my reed have slid slightly apart to the sides - about 1/32". The tape still holds them together, and it seems to play OK. Is this seperating normal? Is it bad? What causes it, and what can I do to prevent it? (At the moment, I am just leaving the reed out on my desk after playing -- Does it need to be enclosed?) Thank you again!
@duduklessons72399 жыл бұрын
Hi Darius, Has your reed split? If so, this is not normal, and it's time for a new reed. It's most likely caused by temperature or humidity changes. Hard to control if you live in an environment of extremes. Where did you get the reed? You can leave the reeds out, but just make sure that you put the cap on it whenever you're not playing. Cheers, M
@dariuskaufmann64199 жыл бұрын
Duduk Lessons Thank you, Mark - The reed has not split, but the two halves have slid slightly to the sides relative to each other - Does that makes sense? Like a sandwich where the top slice slides slightly to the right, and the bottom slightly to the left. But they are still attached (I guess due to the tape). Is this/ common? Does it effect the reed performance? The reed seems to be playing OK, as far as I can tell.

Darius Kaufmann Hi Darius. Hard to say....but it doesn't sound good! I wouldn't be overly concerned about one reed though. Always have lots of reeds, because reeds are very temperamental. Buy them from a reputable vendor. They will be more expensive, but worth it. Good luck. M
@dariuskaufmann64199 жыл бұрын
Duduk Lessons Can you recommend a vendor that sells good quality reeds? Preferably one I could order from on-line. Many thanks for all your advice...

I cant even play a scale properly :( it is out of tune.
@duduklessons72399 жыл бұрын
It's pretty easy to tell. Get yourself a piano, or a tuner, and just play a note with your thumb and three fingers down on each hand. That will give you an idea of what key the reed is meant for. As far as an out of tune scale, you could have some poor quality reeds, or it could be your technique. Hard for me to suggest anything without hearing you play. Feel free to post a video response, and I can comment on what the problem is. Cheers, Mark

these machines are pretty expensive any cheaper methods to achieve a similar result?
@duduklessons72398 жыл бұрын
+Hrak Bidkhanian Hi Hrak. Yes, they are expensive, and I think that they are priced far too high. An alternate solution would be to download a drone app on your cell phone. Probably only cost you a couple of bucks. You may have to output the signal though to an amplifier in order to get it loud enough.
There's a Duduk priced at a 100 dollar at amazon. That's the cheapest I can find.

Kamil Radzimowski Hi Kamil, I expect comments like this from internet trolls, but not from fellow musicians! I may not be the best duduk player, but I also don't troll other people's channels with negative, destructive comments. As a musician yourself, you might consider taking a more positive, inspirational approach. Comments like yours reflect badly upon you. If you have helpful comments on better techniques than what I am teaching, you are welcome to contribute to the discussion.
