I LOVE this song! Let's look at the chords and funky little strumming pattern together. Once we've looked at that we'll do a slow playalong and then a full speed playalong - I'll shout out the chord changes while you jam it out.
We look at the guitar solo toward the end of the video - a good introduction to lead guitar for sure. Let's get rolling!

If your fingers are running out of power, push your elbow out, away from your body. Your fingers become a powerful clamp. If you move your thumb towards the nut, you get even more squeeze on the strings and neck, without killing your hand and fingers.

Hey Shane. Love your lessons they have been important to my "guitar journey" (especially the Gordo songs!). The string "wacking" is a challenge for me to pick up as you teach and also in other songs like CCR have you ever seen the rain. I feel like the bar chords (B minor here) give a good sound but open chords not so good. it also seems to be helped by releasing the pressure with the left hand while staying on the chord? And lastly, this wacking sound does not appear in any videos of this song I can find. It is all strings and synth sounds. Is the wacking sound simply a way for the single guitarist/singer to perform it with some beat short of using backing tracks or playing with others? Thanks for all of your amazing lessons and materials!

Fantastic explanation regarding the strumming pattern, something I always struggle with. But I'm even more amazed by the "pull the elbow back" for the b-minor. Maybe it's something most people do naturally but I for sure didn't. Just the thought of pulling the elbow back a bit now saves all my bar chords. I really had one of those "omg-that's -how-you-do-it" moments. Great video as always, thank you!

Hi Shane, love your work and really getting a lot out of the instruction. I have a question though - maybe I'm missing something (and I mean no criticism or disrespect) but you describe the verse format as the same thru to the bridge (tag line etc). The progression you explain the verses as, starts at 9:37 ("right from the Bm, follow along...") and you play: Bm G G D | Bm (GD)(GA) Bm | (BmG) D D. Then at 10:30 you state "second verse the same, third verse the same". However, (and this is where I get confused) when you play through the song, both at the slow pace and normal speed, there seems to be a variation in that pattern between some of the verses... In the slow play through commencing at 11:53 1st Verse: Bm G G D | Bm (GD)(GA) Bm | (BmG) D D - and this is exactly as you described earlier. But then in Second verse, commencing 12:25, we have Bm G G D | Bm (GD)(GA) D... There is a D there instead of going straight to the Bm and you say at about 12:45 "Right to the third verse, go..." and into the same structure as the first verse. So I'm confused about how there are two verse formats and not sure if that should be obvious as I can't really sing and play at the same time so I can't make sense of it. The explanation is so clear I feel like I must be missing something to do with the different lengths of the lines in the verses or something. Can you clarify please? Thanks very much in advance and please keep up the awesome tutorials!
