Click here for ALL of my Led Zeppelin song lessons in my Led Zeppelin playlist! • Led Zeppelin
The "Immigrant Song" first appeared on Led Zeppelin's 1970 album Led Zeppelin III. It was also released as a single and charted in several countries.
It is another fine example of Led Zeppelin completely reinventing itself over and over again. There really was nothing that sounded like "Immigrant Song" when it was released.
Most of track is built off of Jimmy Page's iconic staccato driven guitar riff. This riff gives the entire song quite a lot of energy.
Pay close attention to the picking pattern I demonstrate for this opening riff in the video lesson. It is essential to get a consistent technique when performing the main riff in order for it not to sound erratic. The way the riff is performed, a lot of guitarists fall victim to just trying to wing it, which causes them to pick the riff differently every time they play it. That obviously won't build very good consistency both in sound and technique.
Even if the picking pattern that I will demonstrate feels a bit awkward at first, keep sticking with it. You will notice as the riff is sped up and repeated that the picking pattern that I demonstrate is actually quite natural feeling and will give you a very consistent sound.
It is also essential to have the proper amount of palm muting with this riff to help the notes pop-out better.
From there we have a few basic chords that revolve around the main riff. Nothing very challenging with them though.
The end of the track does require you to play the main riff while constantly doing quick chord stabs on an C9 chord. I will demonstrate the timing of that part as well towards the end of the video lesson.
So have fun learning this classic Led Zeppelin song and make sure you keep that riff tight! It also makes an excellent picking exercise!!
Carl...

@@bazrico9945 When I first learned this song, I had that happen as well. For me, the key was to keep my left hand on the fret board in a very straight/perpendicular position, similar to when doing a bar chord. But instead, in that position, you just use your fingers to bounce back and forth between the 2 notes in the riff. You also need to make sure you keep your fingers from creeping near or onto the actual fret as you hit the low E string when you bounce back and forth. I think that is what causes at least part of the harmonic effect. You have to keep your fingers wide as you do it - It seems like a very simple riff, but the timing of it is actually a little tricky.

Since there is no solo in this song, if you want to spice it up a little, here is one way to play the "AhAhAHHHH AH" Viking yell on guitar: Using your second or third finger, so that your first finger remains free, go on the D string and slide quickly from D14 (D string at the 14th fret, i.e.) to D16. Then with your free first finger using the B string quickly hit B14, slide it down to B13 and hold the note with some vibrato. Just as that note fades, slide it up and hit B14 again to end the riff. This comes after doing the main riff 4 times to start the song, then do the Viking Yell riff a second time, and then pick up the main sequence again at the A to E, E A chord part. If you have a phaser and/or flanger pedal, you can use those to give it a more "voice" like sound - If you can use both, there's something about the mixed signal using both that gives it a voice like effect. As I recall, Page said in an interview once that when the song first came out, some people thought it was him on guitar doing the "AhAhAHHHH AH" part, rather than Plant singing it, which made me want to do it on guitar.

@@pickledcottoncandy it's good to have good downpicking but it's better to know when to use other kinds of picking, for example whole lotta love is quite simple to play downpicking but if you listen closely it's played with alternate picking which gives it a looser sound. Just cause you can play it downpicking doesn't mean you should, it depends on the groove.

Watch Gretchen from Zeperella's tutorial in which she shares that Jimmy Paige signed off on the chord voicing of the " mystery chord " which you mention as a C dominant 9 .....but in reality is a G minor chord with a special voicing. The C you hear is played by the bass. She shows how to play the Immigrant Song alternative G minor......which actually really does sound correct.

That C Dom 9 chord at the end. (1) Are you sure he's not variating it by sharping that D note in that chord to D# on the 2nd String (B String) every other chord strike?? (2) What about Jimmy saying people are playing it wrong and that it's a G Minor chord with the minor 3rd on the 2nd fret of the A string and a bar across the 3rd fret on the 3rd and 2nd strings? It appears Jimmy is lying about that to F with us. He is a Crowleyite. That G min chord he claims he's playing sounds NOTHING like the recording. It is a very cool sounding chord that I add to my own original riffs whenever I can though. What do you think Carl?

***** Quick solution for left hand muting.. Think of your left hand's fingers as pushing down on keys.. Keep it hovered and lightly touching and muted, and whenever you play the note, press down and release when you want to mute again.. Hope this helps..
