...We're going to need a bigger table. In this week's How to Play, host Becca Scott teaches Jaws by Ravensburger. Relive the classic film in a 1 vs all action adventure game that takes place in 2 phases. Become the Killer Shark of Amity, menace the swimmers and avoid capture, or be Hooper, Brody and Quint and hunt down the killer beast in the Amity Island Phase. Then, defend the Orca from an attack by the killer shark and defeat it once and for all or become chum in the Orca Phase.
Thanks to Ravensburger for partnering with us on this video. Learn more about the game here: www.ravensburger.us/discover/...
To buy the game, visit the following link: www.target.com/p/ravensburger...
Tabletop games are super fun, but learning the complicated directions and rules can be a challenge. Becca Scott is your game tutor, explaining the game mechanics in an easy to follow way, so you can get to playing the games faster.

11:22 Slight correction / omission: (Manual page 10) "If a Boat Space gets damaged or destroyed, all Crew Members that were on that Boat Space fall into the water." The shark does not have to fully destroy the tile in order to knock crew members into the water; he needs only damage it. Also, it would be helpful to clarify how the adjacent space rule works in the second act, as our group didn't understand it until having played the game several times, and from searching online it seems other people are equally confused. Each tile is divided into a boat space and a water space, with space borders being defined by a white line OR the edge of a tile. Any space that shares part of a line/edge with another space is considered adjacent. This is especially important as boat spaces become damaged or destroyed, because the adjancency of spaces (and therefore what can be targeted by the crew and shark) CHANGES as the round continues. Also also, this is a really fun game that anyone with at least 1 friend willing to play should own.

I love this game, there's just one rule I'm not totally clear on. In Act 2, if a player can attack with a melee weapon from a space adjacent to the resurfacing space, and a player with a firearm can attack from even further away, why would anyone ever put themselves in a resurfacing space at all? Doesn't this make it almost impossible for the shark to ever get a hit on them until they've already destroyed most of the boat?
@MustachioMo
@MustachioMo Жыл бұрын
So, the water space and boat space of a tile are 2 different spaces, even though they’re on the same tile. When it says you can use a melee weapon from a space adjacent to a water space, it means the boat space on the same tile as the resurfacing zone, if that makes sense.

10:45 to 12:00 Thank you so much for this video. I've tried to play this game with many groups of friends and while we love Act 1, the instructions for Act 2 simply do not explain anything regarding the dice rolls, evade points or the bonus attacks. The first time I thought I was just misunderstanding the rules, but after having 3 groups of people read the manual and none of us understanding how to play, I think it's just not adequately explained. But with this video we can actually figure it out now :)

Listening to the details here, it seems like they've paid a lot of attention to the film and that makes it even better. I'm sold! Thanks for this little video. I have a question I wonder if someone could answer: In act 2 (I’ll use the resurface options shown on 11:46 as an example) let’s say the boat in section B was destroyed - can the shark surface at B, an open water space since the boat is destroyed, and attack the boat sections of A or C since B is open water? Or does it have to only attack the boat in that specific resurface option even if it’s beside open water? Does that make sense? Also question 2 I have is; In Act 2 if 2 people attack the shark on the same spot does the evade count against the damage of each individual attack damage or the damage dealt total?

Probably doesn't surprise you to learn this, but the game essentially already exists. Look for "Fortune & Glory". It's not flawless (bizarrely, you spend Glory and hope to get Fortune) and can get a bit samey after you've played it a couple of times, but it has the theme DOWN and has a couple of interesting mechanics. Unfortunately it's Flying Frog games so it has the the same problems many of their games do (the expansions make the game worse, not better, many people dislike the photo art, the female characters tend to be parodies, etc). It's still a lot of fun if you can find it cheap enough.

Also The Adventurers games have kind of a Raiders of the Lost Ark feel to them as well. They are more simple than Fortune and Glory, but it's another option to enjoy that kind of theme. :)

Clarification on motion sensors: The shark must report if it was in a motion sensor space at any time during its turn, not just moving through or into a motion sensor space. It would also have to report if it started its move in a sensor space, even not moving would require the reporting the sensor triggered. One of the shark's power tiles allows to not set off a motion sensor, which explains how it might wind up starting the next turn in a sensor space, but not yet detected.

The only other advantage I can think of being in the water is that it allows you to hit the shark with melee weapons/attachable weapons in two water zones. Normally if you were on the boat you would only have access to one water zone but being in the water allows you to have access to two water zones to attach the shark. However, being in the water is still not encouraged because the shark gets a bonus roll if you are adjacent to the shark in the water after the shark attack phase.

10:00 this is still something that doesn't make any sense to me. Why would anyone ever put themselves on a space where the shark could resurface if they can always be on an adjacent space or further away? There are going to be very few instances where they have no choice but to be on a resurfacing space, and will almost always be able to avoid putting themselves in harm's way, making it almost impossible for the shark to ever hit them.

I'm reminded of the way the rulebook for Love Letter answers that - to paraphrase, "You shouldn't be playing with people who think cheating is fun." That and, yeah, not cheating is the reason moves are written down. I actually had a runin one time because the people I was playing with had missed the rule about the black token. Of course I played the Researcher in Pandemic wrong for years so I have no room to talk...

this looks like a hell of a lot of work to even set up and then constant consultation with the instructions as game play

I wanted to love this. Its just too complicated to be fun. There's too many rules that can be overlooked or missed. Make it like 1-3 players (Brody, Quint and Hooper) against the shark with an electronic lighthouse in the middle complete with Jaws music and sound effects. Simplify it. Enhance it. Not this interpretive convoluted mess.

If there's a more complicated game than this, I hope I never find it. Ridiculous.

My chick isn’t the smartest of people... Will it be easier for her to play the shark or the humans?

My wife is pretty smart, but English isn't her first language, and I often have a hard time explaining some simpler games to her. We played this for the first time over the weekend with another couple, and she was able to pick it up after the first round. It would probably be easiest to make her Hooper and have two other people to play with, since every character only has a few tasks to focus on, and Hooper's couldn't be more straightforward. All of the others (the shark included) have to deal with a little more strategizing.

Seems way to complicated, no thanks I’ll just watch the movie again for about the 100th time.
