Some characters do get a chance to mitigate damage. Some get to do both, counter attack and mitigate. Some characters have other means, such as healing lost damage or like in Loki's case, they can use a token to completely ignore incoming damage...hopefully. The game isn't meant to take a long time to play, so most mitigation won't be significant during play. As an example, Black Widow can avoid one point of damage for every 1 or 2 she rolls during her defense roll, but at 3 dice, 4 when upgraded, even if she gets a perfect roll she will likely still take a hit. Most characters defense rolls give them ability tokens, in some cases it's the only way to get those tokens. It's sort of a, okay you hit me, now here's what I can do in return. You really aren't going to be relying on your defense roll for survival in most cases, but sometimes that 1 or 2 points of mitigation can give you a slight edge. It's usually the token rewards from defense rolls that are the big bonus. Someone like Widow who can place her time bombs on you from rolling the defensive roll can be a game changer. If you get a couple of those, it's 4 damage each if you can't get rid of them in time. And all you did was attack her.

There are different levels of tutorials. This one is good enough to start the game. I was not confused when he "paid" to change the dice since I assumed he was only making an example. As is done with many tutorials. On top of things, he also did not mention that there is an order of things during combat. They don't matter for casual play but for those die hard competitive players it does get extremely specific. Which he did not go through (because this is to teach basics) or that even though an attack is red/undefendable players can use cards to negate the damage in some way. (reduce by 6 or whatnot) EXCEPT ULTIMATES. Once the roll is allowed to activate. NOTHING STOPS OR CHANGES WHAT AN ULTIMATE DOES. (this is for those people that read the description but still go "but what about..." lol Anyways, great video Tim!

@@Sgrand80 I assume you already knew how to play. Like I said, my friend had never seen or played the game before, and he watched the video. When we played he didn’t know enough to play the game. So no, it doesn’t teach enough to start the game. I didn’t just come here to bash someone. I found another “how to play” video and he watched that one, and was good to go. Only very specific things between characters ever came into question. That’s why I said, 8 minutes isn’t long enough. Things aren’t explained very well. The other video, 17 minutes long, he was able to watch it and play. Yea, there are different kinds of tutorials, but to name your video “how to play”, shouldn’t he walk away with the knowledge of how to play? Some people just aren’t good teachers. Or they don’t put themselves in the mind of a new player who doesn’t know already. And the only way the videos get better is feedback, no?

Every hero does something unique so it does get confusing! Black panther would be retaliating/attacking the attacker. He does not block the damage with Bashenga’s honor, but he will receive kinetic energy in exchange!
