How to play Money For Nothing by Dire Straits - Intro Section
In this guitar lesson tutorial, we look at how to play the intro section to Money for nothing by Dire Straits.
The guitar tone used in the song was modelled on the tone used by ZZ Tops guitarist Billy Gibbons. It has been stated that while performing live Mark Knopfler uses a wah-wah pedal, probably a Cry Baby run through a Marshall Amp. On the original recording, Knopfler used a Gibson Les Paul guitar but while performing live has also been seen to use his custom Pensa.

If someone is interested, here is my take on the harmonics he plays during the song - I think he plays the harmonics with his right hand ( a similar technique is known for being done with a pick - think metal squeals! ) and not natural harmonics like depicted in the tab. Let me expand if you're still reading: I think he plays the harmonies not by touching fret 4 or 5 lightly, but by plugging the respective string with his right hand thumb while his right hand index finger is 'parked' against the same string coming from below. With this, you create the same harmonic effect as if you'd touch fret 5 lightly and plug the string, it's only symmetrically happening on the other end of the guitar. I hope this is understandable, it's easy to show and hard to explain. If you get those two fingers to the right distance - about an inch or 2-3 cms apart, don't worry, the fingers will naturally fall to this distance when handpicking this - then you get a nice harmony out of it. Now move this right-hand shape as whole back and forth the strings and you will even get some different, artificial harmony pitches depending on where you are on the neck. Move the shape towards the nut, the pitch gets lower, move it towards the bridge and it gets higher. But there is a 'window' where it sounds good, if you go too far towards the nut, you will start hitting different natural harmonics and the pitch will change again, the same goes for too far towards the bridge. There is a sweet spot of about 3-4 inches / 10cm from the bridge where it works really nicely. The spot where my picking hand lands naturally is incidentally the spot where I get pretty close to the C# pitch which he uses in the song when playing it as a pinch harmonic - at least that's what my tuner says. :) It would also easily explain why there at some points is a pitch closer to a 'D' in the song, and at some points it sounds more like a 'C#'. I think he just moved his right hand by a small margin and thus got a different pitch for the harmony with the right-hand technique described above. What I think also helps to realize that this is the Knopfler way ( not the correct way, there's no such thing - but the Knopfler way) and that this is an absolutely feasible way of him having played it is realizing that a string has the same natural harmonics on both its sides. So the 'D' pitch that's played on the 5th fret naturally can also be played if you do it the same distance from the bridge that the 'D' is from the nut. And this fits exactly with the harmonic pitches presented here and with where the right hand would naturally fall on a Strat in terms of distance from the bridge. You would expect to find the notes in question at around the place where your right hand is, because it is 'about four to five frets away' from the bridge, and the same harmonies fall into the same places on a string symmetrically. So yeah, basically, play it like it is taught here - it is an amazingly good tutorial! - but rest the index finger you don't need anyway on the bottom of the string the thumb plucks. Get the distance right, create a harmonic this way and you get basically exactly what's in the song, at least to my ears. Maybe it will help someone, maybe it won't. Have a nice day, your tutorial was very well done. Thanks for sharing!

Came across this as a one of those recommended for you vids. Must admit didn't watch it through first time. but decided to find it again in my history. Glad I did. Very instructional with excellent delivery. On screen tabs a bonus as well. But a bigger bonus I've found is your back catalogue. Will have a lot of fun going through that. Thank you. Impressed.

As most know, there are many ways to play this song. MK himself varies the method over time and live vs recording, etc. And over the past 6 months (I'm sophomoric to those who post tutorials) I've made it my business to learn the myriad of methods to this song..from fingers vs thumbs, wah pedal vs amp tweaks, even an excellent tutorial from a guy in brazil speaking Portuguese with 1.6 million views. Carl at GL365 and Justin and Marty...all great. And I love the hilarious bearded dude that gives tips to get the most out of this song. And SUAP (Alan) is also excellent. I must say, IMHO... Heanor's tutorial here seems to be straight forward, accurate, w/tabs and seems easiest to understand. In a sea of tutorials out there for this gem of a song, from horrible to amazing...what a blessing to find this new tutorial not yet even a year old. Thanks Heanor SOM!
