Every time I watch these wonderful, informative videos I kick myself for not continuing my studies with the great Denis Sandoli in Philadelphia back in the early '80s. After four grueling years at conservatory I had the opportunity to study with Sandoli but, after only two lessons, I had had enough pressure. IDIOT! l'm convinced life would have been different if I stuck it out. For those of you who don't know who Sandoli was, Coltrane was mentored by him for three or four years along with many other jazz artists. Now in late life I see Kent Hewitt's inspiring jazz pedagogy and long for my youth.

I understand your discontent, but the only thing you can and must do now is embrace life and music to the greatest extent you can; dwelling on past regrets only dampens the joy of the present moment. I sincerely hope that soon you can make peace with the decisions you made, and give your past self the gift of grace and forgiveness. And I encourage you to make the most of the time you have now. Play music, enjoy life, love others. Jack

I'm enjoying listening with a focus on the rhythm of Mr Hewitt's solos. I mentally transcribe the rhythm only, without regard to the melody, and try to anticipate/sing the rhythmic figure in ba-da-ba-dah nonsense syllables. Like we hear Kent doing. I think it's a good mental practice to hear Kent play the little motif once and I try and recognize/learn and sing it back on the 2nd and 3rd time in the phrase. I always sing my solos, audibly or otherwise. Thanks Mr Hewitt

Fun fact: The Flintstones theme is rhythm changes. If you hear a song and think it might be based on rhythm changes, see if you can sing the Flintstones to it; if it fits, it’s probably rhythm changes

Hi Kent. Thank you for this re-upload. When I first encountered Anthropology a few years back, it was too early for me for bebop : I didn't understand the language and, even worse, I was so eager to absorb all kinds of information that I didn't know how to approach such a tune. This dense video gave me a good reason to go see my teacher and tell him I wanted to give Anthropology a second chance, and oh my, I discovered that when you really take the time to absorb the melody with single bass notes in the LH, the entire process is so enjoyable and I can feel the progress rocketing day after day. Thanks a lot !

I'm going to have to rewatch while I'm at the keyboard... especially the part where you showed different comping voicings for different scenarios - when you're accompanying a voice/melodic instrument, when you're accompanying a bass, and when there are both. That's good practice, even if lately I mostly encounter that need when multitracking my own melody and bass...which only means I've got to get out more😮 Thanks for the video. It makes sense that some really foundational stuff was covered in earlier videos, and I've been learning it like picking from a salad bar - and focusing more on the freshest selections. Except, with videos, there's no need for a recency bias, as there might be with lettuce😂

I remember watching the video when it first came out, I tried hard but I still can't play it. Looks deceptively easy but its not. Maybe I need to let go of the melody and just focus on the chords.
