How to play Real Scratch Golf

4 жыл бұрынFor a lot of GOLFMATES , that scratch handicap is a lifetime goal. There is no question: if you’re able to shoot a round under par, you’re a member of a rarified group. You’ve entered a whole new level of the game and accomplished something most golfers never will.
If you’re close to the dream of becoming a scratch golfer but you haven’t quite made it to the finish line, I’ve got you covered. I’ve got some tips and concepts that will give you the final push you need to finish your next round with an enviable scorecard.

Chipping
I love to talk chipping. If you’ve been following our KZfaq channel, you’ve probably caught a few of my videos on chipping. It’s one of my favorite skills to teach for two reasons.
First, people who practice chipping often see improvement in this skill very quickly.
Second, players who are great at chipping do really well over the course of a round. A solid chip shot often lands close enough to the hole for the player to convert it on the first putt. Over the course of an entire round, the number of strokes saved by excellent chipping really adds up.
If you want to be a scratch golfer, approach your chip shots by thinking in terms of what I call “the magic 7 feet.”
By this I mean that you want your chip shots to land within seven feet of the hole . . . on average. You may occasionally chip the ball to within 9 feet, sometimes within 3 feet, but overall, you want that average to be about 7 feet.
You see, a low handicap or scratch golfer typically converts 50-55% of their putts from 7 feet. So, if you consistently land your chip shots within that distance, you’re set up sink at least half of those putts.
On the other hand, if you have a three or four handicap and your chip shots are landing 10 or 12 feet from the cup, your odds of sinking that first putt drop significantly.
If you’re hoping to become a scratch golfer, you’ve got to focus your chip shots on achieving the magic 7 feet.

Okay, you already know distance is essential for shooting a round under par. But do you know how long your drives have to be in order to be a scratch golfer? And do you know when you can stop blaming your distance and start looking for other solutions?

Not sure why people are calling Dan boring. He's calm, collected and a great golfer. His calmness is something I wish I had on course. He's not a KZfaqr, he's not a celebrity, he's a very talented young golfer who just struggles to put his thoughts into words because it comes naturally to him after all his years of hard work. Imagine someone jumped in your car and asked you to explain exactly what you're doing as you drive. The bunker and flop shot tips are getting tested ASAP! Cheers

Certainly would like to see more of this sort of thing. The difference is mostly mental approach (though obviously it helps if you can crash it 280+!). Positive thoughts, trusting your skills and imagining seeing good shots - it all helps.

What I loved about the video is how Dan doesn't let any doubt come into his thinking before he hits his shots. He visualizes the shot....knows that he has hit the shot countless times before...and then let's muscle memory take over and makes the swing necessary to complete the shot! I know even when I was carrying a 4...I was always questioning myself on certain shots... especially ones where I needed to hit a draw, or a low shot into the wind. Once the practice range is back open, I know what I need to work on... visualizing each shot on the range instead of just hacking balls down range!!!! One of the best videos ever Liam!!! Big thanks for Dan letting us in on how his mind works when playing!! 👍👍👍👍👍

I liked that one too. I've used a line to get better at ball striking and I've used a line two inches behind the ball in the bunker, but I haven't practiced it his way and it looks perfect for practice the backyard.

One thing I would add to the bunker lesson; its an all arms shot, keep your lower body quiet through the swing, you open your stance at address to mimic where your lower body would be at impact of a full swing, but the swing itself is mostly arms. I use this same concept for flop shots and I get relatively positive results.

VG tips on bunkers and the flop shot. Major differences between pro’s and us amateurs is their course management. U R correct Liam, us amateurs could get our HC down a lot further if we applied correct course management. That’s why OMP is off 11 at 80 yrs of age.

Pitching out of the rough: If grass gets between t'clubface and t'ball, the ball will come out hot with less backspin because the grass prevents the grooves from doing their job i.e. the grass stops t'grooves from grabbing t'ball. So t'ball will release more when it lands. In this case, t'ball was lying well, and the ball came out soft because there was little or no grass between t'face and t'ball. Most of us mortals just want to get t'ball onto t'green or at least leave a good miss for a chip and a putt.

I have started looking back at some of these videos and WOW did I get a lot out of this one. My son also loved it who is looking at playing golf for a living but has some work to do but the mind set of the Am golfer in comparison to the Pro is great to listen to. have go from the fairwayI geta par and move on .................brilliant thank you. good luck to Dan G in 2022.

A chap I know plays on the Korn Ferry, and Malaysian, tour(s). He gives me a shot a hole. I play off four. Folks, if you don't want a pasting don't play (decent) tour pros around short courses...they'll break 60 more often than not.

@@adiw9417 ... Hi Adi, personally ... anything that's under 6500 (par 72) off the back tees. I like Aldeburgh (in the UK). At 6600 it doesn't seem long. Until you see it's a par 68, has no par 5s. The standard scratch score for there is five over par. It is tight, there's loads of gorse and the wind can howl. In short it's bastardly tough.

Majority of really good amateur golfers and lower level pros have the personality of a cucumber. Especially if they’ve played for england, they’ll quickly drill any personality out of anyone the boring fuckers 😂

adrian lawson I guess it depends how you define success. I’ve met many successful people who aren’t, but golf seems to produce more of these arseholes than many other sports, probably due to the fact most people who are at elite levels of golf are middle/upper class and have grown up with a silver spoon up their arse.

I've watched a lot of video of low handicappers and their mind set..... the one thing that always occurs to me is how little they seem to enjoy the game. It all becomes too perfect.

@@GolfMates I get Adam's post though. I work with a fella who was a 2 handicap golfer. He stopped playing because he said the difference with his game and mine (19 handicapper) was, where I could have a few really bad holes but still post a decent net total, his whole card could be ruined if he had a really bad hole. It got to the point where it messed with his head and he stopped playing. (Obviously, he wasn't a tour pro, but played at a decent amateur level). His enjoyment disappeared completely and he hasn't played for 10 + years.

Interesting, 95% of all golfers hardly reach more than 250 yards with their driver, but 95% of all KZfaq recommendations regarding the driver are aimed at the 5% who hit further than 250 yards. 🤣😂🤣

I would think more like 5% can't hit 300 plus. If you're watching golf on KZfaq I would think you're at least a decent golfer. 250 yards is a very responsible number for most.

If you can't hit your driver over 250 yards then you should watch videos on how to hit your driver correctly. Not on how to be a scratch golfer.
