Thanks Shawn. I played when I was a kid, but unfortunately gave it up after about two years. Today I purchased a trombone at a flea market and videos like yours will hopefully get me back into the swing of things (no pun intended).

A long time friend and pianist had an old Yamaha trombone laying around his house taking up space. I’m a bassist and I mentioned to my friend that I planned to take up the trombone in my old age. I offered to buy it and my friend gave me the trombone for free! Your instructional videos will help immensely. LET’S PLAY!!!!!

Keep at it! There is definitely a a learning curve that is a little longer than some other instruments as your facial muscles figure out what they need to do in order to get a good sound. The biggest thing I usually focus on with students who are just starting out is trying to make sure you are blowing your air in a relaxed way and not tightening your face up too much. Best of luck!

im switching from Bes Bas to trombone....the biggest thing for me is to know the positions for every note...pfffff...Is it useful to write The Slide Positions at the notes if you are just starting out with the trombone.

I find my reynolds trombone, that I just got a mind boggling good deal on, feels quite unbalanced on my shoulder. For starters, it's front heavy but more of a struggled is when I set the slide 90 degrees from the bell side , that bell side wants to turn counter clockwise and rest on my shoulder flat. In terms of comfort, that might be where it is most comfortable and effortless to hold that position, but of course, that turns my mouthpiece counterclockwise so that it's close to my left ear. Having said that, if I open the ange up to about 135 degrees, everything lines up and I only have to contend with the front heavy issue. I'm thinking of putting a counterweight on the back end t deal with that. Obviously I'm doing something wrong or need to start working out at a gym to strengthen my left arm. So what am I doing wrong ?
@ShawnBellMusic
@ShawnBellMusic 3 ай бұрын
I would try getting a counterweight. You might be surprised by how much that helps those types of issues feel better.
@SmeeUncleJoe
@SmeeUncleJoe 3 ай бұрын
Being absolutely new to the T-Bone, I did not know counterweights existed or where to get one or how to shop for one. . I do observe a kind of token in back U tube midway on the cross brace that has a name badge on it. Do the counterweights go there ? Has this been planned for in the design by the manufacturer or am i left to my own inventions ? Also, this added weight, am I supposed to simply adapt to it and build up the strength to hold it up. I remember decades ago, in boot camp being forced as punishment to hold wooden block up in front of me. It quickly ceased to be light weight after a few short minutes. I noticed no one is resting any part of the instrument on their shoulder for support. Thank you again. Great videos. @ShawnBellMusic

why does everyone always cram all 3 fingers into the box? putting the pinky under the pipe gives you a much better grip and control over the horn angle.

my bass trombone 1st position is not "all the way in". I have to pull my hand slide out half an inch or so. Is this normal? Pulling the main tuning slide out does not help and just makes the tone /focus go out.
@ShawnBellMusic
@ShawnBellMusic 2 ай бұрын
Most trombones are manufactured so you will need to pull the tuning slide out at least a little bit for the instrument to be in tune. This gives some flexibility as some players may only need to pull about a little and some may need to pull out more. A few questions that will help to answer your question. What note are you using to tune your 1st position? Is that the only 1st position note you are checking for pitch? Can you maintain whatever note you are checking with a consistent tone and intonation or does the intonation move around? Have you tried practicing for a few days with your tuning slide pulled out?

How are they supposed to know what an Eb sounds like before they sing it? You might want to explain that F is sol in Bb, Bb is do, and they're playing sol-fa-mi-re-do.
@ShawnBellMusic
@ShawnBellMusic Жыл бұрын
I agree that singing is incredibly important and it is something I do with all my students beginning through advanced. I didn't do it here mostly because I wanted to keep this video as concise as possible. I think I might have address it in one of the other beginning videos in this series. I can't quite remember as these were from a few years ago😬

This is probably a dumb question, but as someone who in their dotage is trying to learn the trombone I'll ask it anyway. Why don't makers of trombones, at least for 'beginner trombones, put markings on the inner slide that would indicate where the positions are? Granted, for some notes these slide positions may have to be varied a bit, but it still would be helpful.
@ShawnBellMusic
@ShawnBellMusic 8 ай бұрын
Are you aware of the P-bone? It is a model of trombone that is made of plastic. They play pretty well considering they are plastic. I have seen some people put colored tape on the slide in to indicate where the different positions are for beginning players. I have never tried it myself with any students, but it could be worth looking into.
