This micro-lesson focuses on how to play what you hear in your head on the guitar. A way to practice making the connection between the notes you are hearing and your fingers.
Here is Steve's video I was referring to: • Steve Vai “Alien Guita...

Got any favorite melodies to try this approach on?

I first learned how to do this on piano, using the song ‘Here comes the sun’. It was really thrilling to hear out loud the sounds I already had in my head! I’m currently learning guitar so hopefully I develop the technique to do this properly.

@@callumhunter3645 What a great tune to pick out by ear! Sounds like you are well on your way. Thank you so much for sharing this. I think I will try to pick that one out next.

I started playing guitar because i always have music in my head. I'm just finally getting to the point where, when i hear music in my head, i can pick up my guitar and play it. It's awesome!

That is amazing! I am so glad you are making that connection. I am hopeful to get there. I almost feel like I do it on a subconscious level if that makes sense. I know after I play a guitar part for a tune let's say that it needs something else or another part to go with it, but I don't plan it out ahead of time in my head. I appreciate you sharing this and for leaving a comment.

I often have a problem that if I try to play something by ear (especially if I just imagine a melody or want to play a piece that was not written for guitar), it often feels like I can't fint the right tone because when I find the right area one of them is too high and the one that is one fret below is too low and the melody/riff just doesn't work. I have a suspicion that maybe it's die to guitars being fretted with equal temperament and I'm thinking up/hearing music the way it's written for cellos/violins/etc.? Where the same tone will have a different frequency depending on a scale/mode? And then I get confused on guitar and frustrated and give up feeling like there's something wrong with me that I'm a crappy player

Thank you for sharing all of this. I am wondering if it is more about intonation especially if you are trying to copy stringed instruments. If you have not done so, you may want to consider getting your guitar intonated. You can take it to someone or look up a video. I do not think all of this equates to being a bad player. Like anything else, it just takes time. I would perhaps try listening to the line you are trying to learn, then record yourself singing or humming it and using that as a reference to see if that helps the process. Thank you for leaving a comment and keep working at this.

Haha, I hear you! No pun intended. I seem to have the same issue. I always try to keep my phone near by in case I need to capture an idea in a voice memo or a video. The said truth is, I don't always go back to revisit those ideas. I need to change that. Thank you for sharing and for watching!
