About 5 years ago, I decided to change the way I practice guitar. Instead of memorizing new licks, scales, and techniques - I decided to focus on developing my ear through various ear training exercises to finally be able to play everything I heard in my head on guitar.
In this simple video lesson, David Wallimann will teach you how to start developing simple musical ideas using the minor pentatonic scale to sound a lot closer to your inner musician. Developing your ear to play what is in your mind is one of the most rewarding experience a guitar player can have. And it's easier than you think! Any guitar player can do it with the simple steps explained in this guitar tutorial.
The good news is that you don't need to know a bunch of music theory to do this. All you need is to be aware of what you are hearing inside. The more scales and licks you learn, the easier it gets because you will have developed new inner connection. Straightening the connection mind/ear/fingers is the key to playing better guitar solos and improvisations.

Another excellent lesson.... My "vocalized" solos/melodies are almost always better than my "guitar" solos/melodies. Time to change that! I believe that if I exchange just 10 minutes of noodling for ten minutes of "think it, sing it, play it" I will narrow that gap. Thanks much David! You're the best.

Fantastic, you just bring me back on track. After 52 years not playing guitar I started this year again but have to start from scratch. First song I played again was Albatross from Fleetwood Mac 1968 version but I needed 1 month to get it done. But now I am older it's not so easy to catch up however with the help of you guys I can get it back. Just need a little more time. I have so many good solo's in my mind which I like to play that I need to get out.

Also if you do this you will hear notes that connect to another pattern after learning all your patterns start singing licks runs vocally as well then try to play them eventually you will find those notes easily the more you do it .Probabley the best concept I've ever learned

i'm impressed and proud of twin son number one. he's been able to do this since he started playing! he is also very good at working out what someone plays and transcribing it. he's pointed out in transcriptions where its wrong.

I found this lesson to be inspirational. Maybe it's just me, because I've been studying theory going on 6 years and as a self thought effort I've deliberately been ignoring songs...I don't and haven't as of yet learned any songs. It hasn't been my goal. But now I'm reaching the point where the idea of soloing has come to the front. A new goal is forming as I write this comment. This particular lesson looks likes a first step in that direction. I would be a student and learn more if more teachers presented lessons similar to this. What I would describe as "inter-active". Please consider this...if I'm correct, this could be very popular! And I big THANK YOU!! to you David

Thanks for a much-needed video... It was like you've been reading my mind because this is exactly what I wanted the backing tracks for. I do have one request... can you include the name or id of the backing tracks you use in each lesson. Because I like to take what I learn here, along with the inspiration you impart... I have started to use the "Audacity" application to record my practice sessions. and immediately apply it while it's fresh in the old memory banks. That also will be an aid when comparing my practice results to the lessons. Thanks again for all that you do to help us with the learning curve.

I don't know if I misunderstood this or talking rubbish, but what I got from this is to practice playing (or composing) tunes in my head (over maybe some backing track, without the guitar in hand), whilst visualing where these notes actually lie on the fingerboard.

Thanks! I don’t think that statement is completely accurate. There are many players who have no idea what purchases will count out when they play and it works. Those players rely on shapes and memory. That said being able to hear what will come out (even if they can’t sing it) is way better for personal expression. :)

If I were to play what's in my head some nights, it would result in the end of the universe - Imagine Terry Kath's "Freeform Guitar" played through a full military sound barrage array with Trent Reznor's piano experimentation a la Ghosts I-IX as the accompanying discord. That's part of the problem with an extreme type A with too much musical training (winds, piano, guitar, choral ...) they all crunch together and try to come out of my fingers at the same time 😱

Okay, you were "so frustrated" with your playing 5 years ago. I've been following you longer than that. Ouch! As a guitarist, I don't need a Tony Robbins. But, yeah, that's just me. It seemed to work really well for him, at least for a while . . . maybe it will work for you. I get that you have to stick out amongst the multitudes of teachers. I thought you did without the TR persona. Just me, I don't need it. Turns me WAY off, actually. it's uhm, it takes practice, playing the licks, patterns, and techniques, that you were saying "creates the disconnect" there is nothing wrong with starting from a bend btw. lmao. now you'll over actively avoid starting kn bends. when you practice all those other songs you ARE ear training. I got really, really good, a long time ago, just playing along to rocksmith, I could hear a note, and find it on every string, which is exactly what you are describing. there is no "magic trick" to playing the notes you hear. there is a vocabulary of 12. not 50, not 100, not 1000, there are 12 notes. I promise you will eventually know what all 12 sound like. no matter what. as long as you keep playing the instrument. this guy is just trying to make youtube income content. he's just saying whatever he can. play everything. practice every technique. practice every excercise. and continue seeking out songs you'd love to play. if it's what you like to hear it's what you'll like to play. (sorta, a lot of songs I play are super fun, but boring to listen to) this is such a terrible way to explain ear training. you're just telling people to play scales without explaining how scales work. anyone playing scales is already gaining an understanding of ear training. just "hearing the wrong note" doesn't teach people anything
