The tomato explanations for the spell schools remind of explanation for the 6 stat points I saw online also using tomatoes. Strength is your ability to crush a tomato. Dexterity allows you to dodge a tomato thrown at you. Constitution allows you to stomach a rotten tomato. Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Or .. you could multiclass for more spellslots?
@5-Volt5 жыл бұрын
@@RobbiePDX I think that was the point of the bit where they talked about the Wizards arcane recovery. Wizards get a few spells back in short rests and I think the warlock going "What the hell!?" was a reference to the fact that they do too and past level 2 Wizards can recover more than the Warlock.
@harmonicarchipelgo93515 жыл бұрын
Even more importantly, the Warlock's slots are all on the same (high) slot level, but a Wizard recovering 10 slots would have to recover 10 1st-level slots (except they only have 4, so realistically it maxes at 7, 4 1st level and 3 2nd level). In comparison at say 6th level (even level to be nice to the wizard) a warlock could recover 2 3rd level spells but a wizard could only recover 1. That is on top of being repeatable several times a day. That being said, a wizard has way more slots in general so the need for slot recovery is lower.

Warlocks are not well balanced at very high levels because they only get 1 spell of 6, 7, 8, and 9th levels. This is fine for handling slots (at least before lvl 19 where they fall a little behind) but the issue is versatility as they have to commit to just 1 spell from their list for the higher levels. At least they have Eldritch invocations.... Honestly I love warlocks up to like level 15 or 16, but they lag just a little after that. Way easier to manage than a wizard though.

I think a good level 20 trait would be either the ability to inherently concentrate on 2 spells at once (any item that gives you this would instead allow 3 spells) or maybe for the spells you gain at level 20 you can pick spells from any class as long as they're 6th level or below. Any higher would still need to be a wizard spell

I like to think that the level 20 ability should be more, like a mastery for a third level spell. Then I remember infinite fireball. Or infinite counterspell. Maybe it would work a little better if the spell choice was restricted to your school of choice, but then there's nothing for the war mage from XGtE. Despite that issue, I have reservations about writing individual capstone abilities for each subclass. A better idea might be along the lines of the bard's magical secrets ability, but limited to a spell of 5th level or lower. It could be as though the wizard figured out a way to replicate a divine spell using arcane means, so they choose any spell of 5th level or lower from the cleric, druid, paladin, and ranger spell lists and either gain the ability to cast it x-times per day, or they simply add it to their spellbook. A worse idea but much simpler than the one above would be to give them another spell slot 5th or 6th level, I suppose, or to buff the arcane recovery so it can recover slots of higher level to simulate the same effect.
@MrJoeyWheeler5 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind, the level 20 ability isn't infinite fireball/counterspell: You get to cast the chosen spell ONCE per short/long rest for free.

I don't think it would affect balance all that much given that magic is already unbalanced in later levels and that is the maximum level attainable within RAW. I also can't really see a wizard using a choice like that to pick up cure wounds/mass cure wounds unless the party doesn't have anyone else that can use healing magic, in which case why not let them have that? Beyond that, if the group in question uses unearthed arcana, I believe there is a wizard tradition akin to the divine soul sorcerer and the celestial warlock that would grant them access to cleric spells anyway unless I am mistaken. I'm not extremely familiar with divine spells, but I'd gamble that the most unbalancing thing a wizard could probably lift is raise dead. Again, though, if the party already has a cleric or other member who can cast that, I can't see a wizard choosing that over say antilife shell, awaken, divination, elemental weapon, spirit guardians, heat metal, etc I think it kind of makes thematic sense, since wizards are assumed to have been figuring out two spells on their own each time they level up and reaching level 20 as a wizard makes you one of the most powerful mages (if not the most powerful mage) in the world. It stands to reason that someone with such a vast knowledge of magic could replicate the effects of divine magic through arcane means. That is exactly what WISH does anyway, so it would simply allow them to do it more than once per day for a single spell of their choosing (since every level 17+ wizard worth his wand should know wish).

I think a good substitute for the 20th level ability would be choosing one spell you know and turning it into a cantrip, removing the need for a spell slot.

That was by far the best segway I've seen into an ad. Smooth as chunky peanut butter.

What people don't know about the warlock, you actually get all your spell slots back when you rest. The level 20 feature just lets you get them back faster.
