16 Minutes! This really was a big one and so much work. When I chose this rack I didn't know how much there will be to talk about. But I chose a rack where I also mess up shots and don't run out, so that it's more relateable and we have a bit of safety play and kicking involved. Thanks for watching!

thnx for the video n lessons! As an APA 3 I have several shots down but Shot Selection and decision making is still a challenge for me. Seeing the patterns n visualizing the path of the cue ball help lots, so that even with a miss, I know my approach was correct n I had good shape on my next shot. Just gotta keep drilling n working my game. Thnx again!

Great video Sharivari. Another consideration for hitting the 5 ball is to use right english. This would more or less "hold the cue ball" and bring it through the middle of the table so that you end on the left side on the 6. Also, for some players including myself, hitting outside (left) english on the 5 may yield a lower shotmaking probability because you have to account for deflection and also hit with speed to go around the table. It's easy to miss that shot if you don't do well with thin cuts + outside english. Using inside (right) english will allow you cut (or maybe overcut) the object ball and thus make the pocket "bigger."

For those curious about the math, you can multiply the prob of making the shot times the prob of getting position in order to evaluate the prob of success of the shot as a whole. This can be useful for evaluating two diff alternative shots

Another great video. One VERY minor disagreement I have with this video is choosing the corner pocket instead of the side pocket early in the video while shooting the 5 ball. The distance the 5 ball must travel is so much less if the side pocket is chosen and shape on the next ball is easier with the side pocket choice, imo and my preference is only about 60/40 percentage wise between the two shots. The 1st point Sharivari makes is that different skill levels require different shot selections during play. This maximizes the winning percentages of each player. What good is it to shoot and then miss the "correct" shot when there may be an easier "incorrect" shot available which, if taken, increases your chance of winning that game. His 2nd point is strongly related to his 1st point. Pocketing a ball without shape on the next ball is highly preferable in most cases relative to missing the shot and with that, any chance to play safe and maintain control of the table. Pocketing easy shots or shots where at least there is a good chance to make it but with little to no chance of getting shape to make the shot after that is something else to complicate an already exasperating, albeit highly enjoyable and magical game. Do I play safe on this easy first ball or is it more prudent to pocket it and then play safe on the next ball. This strategy is highly dependent on the number of balls left on the table imo. Fewer balls on the table make competent safeties, on average much more difficult and in some cases close to impossible. In instances where making the ball is very difficult or pocketing it with shape is not feasible and a reasonable safe exists, attempting to pocket that shot is specious at best. Sometimes pocketing, shape, and the safe will all be equally difficult. Shockingly I have no advice if that happens. lol There is a high likelihood of there being thousands of situations one might encounter in a game which make part or all of these helpful basic strategies null and void. 6:22 Another less obvious safety shot involves thinning the 5 ball toward the long rail and going two rails to get safe behind the 8 ball. Concentrate on controlling the cue ball. As long as the 5 ball goes far enough so my opponent can’t shoot it to the side pocket, I’m happy. This also gives you 3 potential blockers - the 8, 9 and possible the 7 ball, if you really mess up.

I will apologize in advance for this lengthy reply,, but please read the entire thing. it'll definitely make sense to you. And I cover a bit of the minds involvement. Ok, first, thank you for making this video!. I've always had the same argument when it comes to their right shot and my right shot. I play with a player who is better than me, by a long way. He has a lot of years and way more experience. But I'm not a slouch, I can play a bit. The issue I have, especially when we play straight pool, is that he constantly says I'm playing the "wrong" shot. My theory is exactly as yours. Although I do believe that there are more chances for the right or wrong shot, when playing straight pool.. I take the shot I'm more likely to make and still have other shots. Either way, still in control and I'm very confident in my safety play. Straight pool helps tremendously with all of my games, especially 8 ball. But either way, I believe we all have our comfort level with playing OUR "right" shot. If I don't end up with some huge run, I at least have a chance to lock my opponent up, hoping he makes the first mistake in a safety war. I usually like my chances in a safety wàr. I kick well and I get the feel of the table speed after a couple of racks. So I agree 100% that we all have our own "right or wrong" shot. At times I'm told I played the wrong shot, even if I make it, but his "right shot" was a very difficult ball to pocket, while maintaining control of the cue ball. If I'm down on a shot and questioning it, while taking my warm up strokes, I'm likely to fail. That being said,, if I'm not committed and confident in a shot, while I'm over that shot, I'm more likely to miss, or sell out with a bad safe. I have to be committed and confident that I'm playing the right shot for me to retain control while bumping more shots out of the pack. There's a book called 'Golf is Not a Game of Perfect'. It's by Dr. Bob Rotella. No matter what sport or game you play that has a lot to do with confidence and the mind, this is a great, easy read. And it's not all about golf. It's about mindset and I think it goes well with this video. I may actually read it again because I've been "off" from pool for 5 years and my confidence is almost non existent. But I do know that I can play and play very well when my mind is totally in it. And my stroke is great ...Hahaha, just joking a bit. But I highly recommend that book! For beginners to pros and everyone in between. Everyone will take something from this book and apply it to their particular discipline. Guaranteed. And no, I don't know him or get a "cut" from it. It's been around for a very long time. Thanks for the video. I'm happy that you took on this subject that has had me questioning myself more often than not. Well your 5 was a sure problem but I like it because these situations happen. We are not always lit up when we step up to the league so it's important to find our best shots when possible. Yesterday I was setting it up to make 2 and 3 at a time but I was on fire. That isn't always the case so it's nice you are showing safety and alternative methods

You need to practice on your speed control and the shot from 4 to 5 where you needed a run thru you will have to have a longer bridge and your jump shot on the 5 you took it for given take aim before you shot like you do with a normal shot then raise your backhand. Thanks for the video!

I would like to see a brief video on how you edit your videos. What editing software do you use.

In every video I have seen I haven't seen anyone yet use the pocket corners to hit balls and jump my friend and myself use these corners, such as, the center pockets you can hit with right or left spin and make it roll straight across to the other side to hit a ball. or using the corner pocket corners to get out of a safety. Jumping using the corner and causing it to go to the other corner or bank off the cushion and hit another ball. Can you show what I mean by that? also when explaining the 2 and 1 rail and jump shot part there was a 4th option bringing up corners which is also a hard shot using the top left corner pocket, the corner of that pocket and using bottom right on it might hit the ball?
