Loved this - such a super useful video if you’re taking the ‘plunge’ into machine polishing. Previous videos on the channel go a bit more in depth I think, great to go back over the basics. FLEX pads and KC abrasives is an ace combo 👍 just important to shake the hell out of the bottle before use !

I was going to get my car professionally detailed, 3 days, £800. Then I saw several of your videos, so in the past few days I've bought a VonHaus DA polisher, some yellow & black Hex logic pads big & small ones, Autoglym super resin polish, Autoglym Ultra high definition wax, several microfibre cloths large & medium, a clay bar, Bilt Hambers medium and some korrosol spray. I will start my very first proper detail next week when I'm off work! I've got 2 buckets with grit guards, good wash mitts & wheel cleaner brushes also, plus Autoglym snow foam for prewash! I'm sure you'll point out if I've forgotten anything important! Many thanks for your absolutely fantastic and massively helpful videos, much appreciated, Greg 👍🚙😁

I just polished my first complete car. Boy oh boy. It was on my father's recently aquired BMW E46 in a black metallic paint. It has had a very hard life before us, living permanantly under a tree, being a family car, and seems to always have gone through the worst Automated Carwash in The Netherlands. It was almost matt, lots of stains (sunscreen and unknown stuff) and lots of corrosion in the wheel area. I used the Flex rotary from work, with a 5' completely worn out foam pad. At the brink of imploding. My polish of choice was a 10 year old polish of Cartec. For decontamination, I ran it through the cheapest offering the best Automated Carwash in town offers. That should do it. I handled the polisher pretty well, on the lowest setting. Cleaned it 5-6 timed with an air chuck. Given all that: results were what I hoped for! Spent about 2.5-3 hours on it, of which 1.5-2 hours was spent trying to get the baked on dried out polish off. But some gloss made a return, and buffer trails/holograms weren't even that horrible. I guess about 25% of the swirls were gone. The old man was really happy! Yeah that was somewhat fun! Now i'd like to have a DA and decent non-staining polish to try again.

Great video as always. Just started out using DA after watching and following your channel. I opted for an Autobrite direct machine and am following their colour code system of pads and products. Seems a good approach for the beginner a it’s all numbered up for cut rating gloss rating. Loving their enrich product. Any thoughts on their pads and compounds, don’t think you’ve reviewed their compounds. I know you rate their magi foam. Cheers and keep the videos coming I really enjoy them all! Regarding chasing perfection, yeah it’s hard, but from a safety point of view and not going straight through clear coat I’ve decided to love the odd swirl, that way I know there’s clear coat still there! lol

I tend to choose german OEM abrasive manufacturers like koch, scholl etc over autobrite or chemical guys etc.. thats no disrespect to detailing brands who offer like ranges of decent quality products from one single source.. but in an industry filled with middle men, with abrasives I like to go direct to the source.

Can’t agree enough with getting your head around “perfecting paint” it will drive you up the wall unless it’s a pretty brand new car or a fresh paint job. There are limitations to expectations when it comes to paint correction and as long as you go at it with that mind frame you will be ok. Also so so so many factors to it as well. 🤯

specially on older cars. generally though Im getting less and less fussy about swirls the old I get. no matter what your wash method and how carefull you are, you will need to clay your car once a year typically, and if you clay you have to polish. so safe wash is perhaps less critical perhaps.

Hi Jon, great video as always. Please can you help - I am in the process of fully detailing my car (with the help of your videos) and just finished the tar/glue removal + fallout removal stage. After rinsing down yesterday I ran out of time so had to put the car away wet and today I obviously have water spotting! The next stage I am going to do is clay bar, is it safe to go ahead and do this or would it be better to remove the water spots first with Koch FSE? Would I then need to do a IPA wipe down or similar before machine polishing? Thank you.

So John between using a brush to clean out the pad and an air line is there any difference haven’t used a brush I use an air line and will wash out the pad and then spin it on the da to dry it it’s safe to dry it like that because that’s what you do with pad washeds
@forensicunplugged4295
@forensicunplugged4295 4 жыл бұрын
if you wash it out I dont really see the point in air lining it. I wouldnt wash it out every set though. If you wash your pad every set the chance of spltter and sling goes up and you can think down the products a bit. some dont play with water well. I would just brush it personally.. some guys at home rotate 2 pads. so you could choose to wash that pad when you swap it out. I dont actually know what its like to use air to blow polish from a foam pad as Ive never done it.

I recently bought all the gear and tried to polish my car for the first time and I definitely made some mistakes. Using a fine claybar with water I managed to inflict loads of crosshatch scratches which I'm not sure I've fully removed, it's very difficult to see what your doing, only under direct sunlight can you notice. I don't have a hose and there might have been some iron fallout dried residue, don't really know where I went wrong.
@forensicunplugged4295
@forensicunplugged4295 4 жыл бұрын
when you clay your scratch up the paintwork. there are lots of things you can do to minimise this. Important to do chemical decon first for tar and glue and fallout. Important to use fine clay when possible and use lots of clay lube and light pressure. but when you clay you will tear up the clear coat and cover the paint in fine marks and these marks typically need to be machine polished out.

@forensicunplugged4295
@forensicunplugged4295 4 жыл бұрын
if your using tiny spot pads with a rotary just work small sections at a time. use tiny amount of product. run at higher rotation speeds than normal for sure. also take the weight of the polisher up more or the pads will just flatten under the machine weight.

@forensicunplugged4295
@forensicunplugged4295 4 жыл бұрын
no it can be done sure no problems. sunlight on the panels can be a problem. You also cant inspect reliably.. sometimes you might get the sun shining in the right spot and have amazing light to see swirls but you can move the sun when you change to a different panel.. so its harder to do a higher standard of paint correction outside because inspecting is important for that... but you can still employ good technique outside and get very good results.. set piece rule.

Are you able to clarify the density of clear coat? I hear it's about as thick as a piece of A4 paper, so I don't understand how people are able to do multiple polishes spread out of years, let alone multiple passes (3 stages etc)
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 4 жыл бұрын
about 50 microns of clearcoat is a good like amount.. can be a lot lower and a lot higher.. a micron is a thousandth of a millimeter. the reason you can do so many passes is purly down to the abrasive particles being so small.

Do you also take it a step further and wet sand and than polish a car, or is polishing removing enough orange peel?
@forensicunplugged4295
@forensicunplugged4295 4 жыл бұрын
polishing wont remove orange peel. Do not wet sand your car Ricardo. Not unless you research it very extensivly. And not untill you have machine polished a fair few cars first. buy a test hood to practise on.. but generally just dont wet sand OEM clear to remove peel. some bodyshops do it on non OEM refinishing work because peel levels dont match or they put in back textured work etc..

hey tim I would recomend a quick 5 minute wash.. just in case any debry falls on the car. even a blanket of foam and rinse it off. be extra carefull drying the areas you have buffed. obviously the conditions, time of year etc play a key factor.. pollen etc.. sleet or snow in winter etc.

I've got a 2 year old car with just over 9k miles. The previous owner has left some scratches by where you open the doors, boot and bonnet (idiot). The rest of the car is in excellent condition but if I'm removing the other scratches I'm thinking I may as well machine polish the whole car. Would you recommend that I only use the finest polish seeing as the paint work is pretty much brand new and just go over the car once?
@forensicunplugged4295
@forensicunplugged4295 4 жыл бұрын
the sort of scratches you get near the handle can be too deep to remove. so you might want to compound or even wet sand those. and then just do a light polish on the car.

Really useful video thanks Jon 👍 I've got a DAS6 and the Koch Chemie abrasive range sat ready to go. My dad's said I can try it on his Golf that's never been machine polished and is very heavily scratched. Would I just use the Heavy Cut and then go onto the Micro Cut? Is there any point in doing a set with the F6 fine cut? Thanks!!! (Not expecting perfection but I'd still like to try and improve the paint 🙂)

First check paint code,if it has cr in front it is ceramic clear also known as uhs clear its hard as rock. You can start with wool pad and with h9,and make sure that you brake abrassives all the way (like doing 4 5 passes) If it is normal clear you can start with normal pad. If you brake down h9 all the way you can finish with M3 with no problem,beacuse h9 finishes quite good for cutting compound.

Respectfully you have to apply some perspective, im doing a one polishing set demo with a machine that is kicking out around 60 DB for 2 minutes. My lawnmower kicks out about 90db and I run that for 30 minutes with no ear defenders. We have talked about noise protection on the channel but you cant cover every single relevent thing or the video will be hours long. its clearly an unscripted demo. Someone else could raise that the oxide in these polishes is something you dont want to breath in so dont just wear a particle filter mask, wear a half mask with filters. Some detailers will also tell you glove up when polishing and goggle up as well because the dust and solvents get into your eyes. This flex brushless DA though is really smooth Im not sure I would wear defenders with it even if polishing a full car, although I typically use wireless noise reduction headphones to zone out and listen to music. From engaging with millions of people now I can say, virtually no one at home will wear filter masks and very very few will wear ear defenders. If your doing this every day then you should of course think carefully about PPE or it will bite you back. But you also have too apply commen sense as well, I cant wear ear defenders when filming and shooting dialogue live like this.
