Good video. I remember being frustrated looking for a video like this. I found all the info spread out from different content makers and had a lot of questions unanswered... I think this is the best all around video on the subject without wandering off into brands or polishers or compounds. Thanks for the video. I know it's gonna help out a lot of new hobbyists.

Great video and one I thought about making also. I typically use 5 or 6 pads per car depending on what i am doing to the paint. I did a big Cadillac Escalade that the paint was hammered and I used 18 pads. That’s the most I have ever used on a detail. The brush works but blowing the pad out with compressed air after every pass works awesome. Glad you made this video because people need to see this and understand that 1 pad just isn’t sufficient if you want to do an entire Polish in one day.

There is a SPTA cordless mini polisher, looks like just what you need for those tricky areas. Miranda Detailing channel has some videos about it. Very much like the rupes iBrid... conceptually at least, but cheaper. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Nobody told me beforehand that I would be needing more than one pad, so I had to learn the hard way. Best

good video Jon. I use 8 to 12 to keep within the maximum cutting/ finishing quality window. one pad per panel and swap them out rather than wash out two pads or four pads with a pad washer two to three times. heat cycles and polishing sets wear pads out so I eliminate each pad to only one to three sections and that's it then switch

For the heavy stage I use 5-6 pads as I keep rotating them, this helps keep them cool and they last longer. Clean with pad washer then air, for second stage 3-4 pads is fine.

The Pxe80 is truly a top machine that's for sure.. untill you get it in your hands a few days on it you slowly understand the true power and how universal the polisher really is.. I totally agree with everything you said about it.. Its an amazing tool.. 👍🏼😎

every time I use it I like it more. Its capability of the machine with the 75ml plate with the DA adapter is great.. for something so small it has good grunt. And it just feels so nice to use. literally the only thing Im not massivly keen on is the digital power dial but its no major problem.

I typically use only 1 pad. I use a pad washer after each panel to remove the spent compound/polish and removed paint. Works well for me. Obviously I am using up the pad quickly instead of putting a little bit of wear on several pads.

I bought a cocraft 720hpv 720w 15mm da it doesn’t free spin the plate doesn’t hit the shroud it’s the breaking that’s a bit stiff COD it’s new it’s pretty much identical to the autofiness dpx but over 1/2 the price

Best save up and spread the cost to get many pads. Use one for shorter amount (or panel) without hammering and change pad. Wash used pads one time and in the end they all last longer kept in better condition.

Jon. I have the same car as you but with the MSport Shadow Wheels. They are a real pain to clean and I can’t seem to polish the scratches out. Would love to know what you’d suggest

I think the Shinemate EP803 kit is a bargain if your after a rotary especially cause it comes with 80mm,56mm and 40mm heavy,medium,finishing, polishing pads,extensions etc

I was hoping to ask you one thing. My car has got piano black pillars, would finish cut and soft pad be alright to get wash maring out of them?

hey there, if you search for how to polish gloss black pillars I have a video on this which shows you how to do it. And its probably the only video that actually shows you the results properly because its not as easy to get a marr free finish as you might think and the tips in the video are really the best way to do it, its one thing talking a good game with gloss pillars its another thing showing people your work properly, up close with the camera and with the right light.

Great video Jon. So would you use a medium pad and compound for light / medium swirls then use an orange pad with your polish wax to finish? Thanks.

Orange pads are usually medium/ heavy cutting pads. After a one step "paint enhancement" you can apply a wax by hand or by machine using a very very soft pad.

Silly question but do certain Guitars have a factory Clear-Coat of some sort? If so, can quick detailers, waxes, or even coating work on them?

electric guitars typically have a laquer which is very similiar to automotive clearcoat, in fact I know some guitar repair places use automotive guns and automotive clearcoat to refinish them.. however some electric guitars use funky clear coat and some use gloss paint with no clearcoat. So you can always polish electric guitar bodys but most eletric bodies you can. Acoustic guitars be more carefull, some have thicker laquer which can be buffed others have laquer that wont respond well to being buffed on and you can ruin the finish.

I polish with 2 cutting 2 polishing 2 finishing pads 😅 I just switch between sets and wash it out. Spin it on the machine and it stays good as new 🤷🏻‍♀️

Question, my BMW is black and has a lot of swirls and scratches. First I will wash it, then use a claybar with onr, only which polish is the best for a black car and which pads, hex etc.(and brand) do I need. Thanks

Such an incredibly important video! I‘m working on a very very similar one explaining why polishing with the target of removing as much defects and finishing as good as possible just isn‘t possible in a cheap way. If you‘re interested, I‘ll post you the link as soon as it‘s online. We need to educate people more and tell them that the term „entry-level polishing set“ really isn‘t fair to begin with.

Hi . Quick unrelated question. As you've used probably used just about every detailing product know to man. I bought myself a black car which looks fantastic when clean but then after a rain shower (which it does here in UK quite often) is covered in horrible spots. Is there a product or method of cleaning to help reduce this? Many thanks

no. Seriously. All protection products with any hdrophobic effect even if its a strong sheeting action will help water spots to form. Only true hydrophillic products will not. There are virtually no hydrophillic products on the market because they look dead even after you have applied them. So basically you got to wash car off. Best product to fix your problem is a garage or like piller post with roof place to park.

Hi Jon would the Flex PXE 80 take the 125mm pad. I have a VW Arteon tons of folds and creases everywhere, I only really want to buy one machine, hopping a bigger pad would also fit.

125mm pad would put to much pressure on the motor, it’s just not designed for it.

Unfortunately you need at least two machines, maybe even three if you buy all Rupes machines. For the price of the PXE 80 you could get the Liquid Elements A1000 for intricate stuff and one of the cheaper DA’s for the big flatter panels. I bought the PXE 80 yesterday to complement my Rupes LHR 15 mk3. The LC UDOS might change the need for more than one machine but it’s looking like it will be around £700 for the machine. It has rotary, 8mm, 12mm, 15mm and 21mm throw in one machine. Even then there might still be a need for a machine that takes smaller pads 1” or 2” for tight areas.

you typically will have a rough idea from the marque although thats no guerentee, ultimately its when you start trying to cut out swirls you will start seeing how easy it is. The easier they cut out the softer it is.. but some really soft paints can marr up more when cutting.. so yer its a case of suck it and see.

To dry a pad, I simply slowly use the machine at full speed like you did and it vaporizes out all the water.

Buying is 1 thing finding time when you have a hectic schedule is another. Pandemic or no pandemic, leave my car in staff car park for a few hours and I guarantee it’s covered in dust from farm vehicles 🚜

What 30/40/50mm pads are you using for the PXE Jon? FYI John, don't bother with a corded rotary machine, drill a hole in the middle of the 3" backing plate for the PXE and throw it on the rotary bit.

all flex pads. The PXE does not have the power to run that 3inch plate with the rotary adapter, I think thats why they put that pin in there to stop you doing that.

Should be only compound stains, if it’s anything else you might not have clayed properly or from unmasked window trims.

Enjoying your channel but as a complete noob looking to do this recreationally, I'm pretty overwhelmed by the forensic approach as some of the 'insider info' whooshes over my head ~ plus I'm undecided if my older model car is even worth investing in the polisher, pads, etc...thinking it'd be similar to an older woman getting a facelift and others would look at it & shake their heads with pity lol 😱🙃

That’s how I do it also! I blow my pads out after every pass with my air compressor. Works way better then a brush.

FAB Automotive Detailing I rotate mine after every pass, helps them last longer with no over heating, i use the lake country pad washer then blow them out.

I recomend Flex Pads and Scholl concepts Spider or Ninjaa pads . And if these are too expenesive I suggest to people to try Rupes or Zvizzer pads.

@@Gooddaytosavelives412 yes. Cg pads are nice to start with. Not too course decent price. But the scholl and flex pads can take a beating and wont delaminate and breakdown anywhere near as quick.

Jon - the beginnings of the videos for last half dozen or so feel a bit rushed and frantic and diving headlong into it - i know it’s the ‘less formal’ unplugged channel but if i’d never heard of either and came across this video i might think that and not bother. Not on negative vibe but I know you’ve been doing this a long time and have so many dedicated fans but maybe keep in mind new subscribers 👍
