In this video, I discuss how to polish stainless trim with just a couple key items. This is strictly for light polishing, and does not describe how to remove deeper scratches and dings. I will discuss that in a later video. However, this will get you in the ballpark if you want to spiff up your trim before you reinstall it on the car.

I'd like to see how you deal with dents in the stainless. Back it with wood,delrin, press it, body hammers? Ive been putting this off for a while. Everything needs to come off my Stage 1, and gone through.

I plan to get into detail with the minor dings and stuff that need more attention than just a buffing wheel.

What are your thoughts on polishing when needing to get dents out and doing some sanding first?

It's a much more involved process...I said I was going to do another video on it, and I have yet to do so! LOL Short of it is: Knock dent out from back side. File flat. Sand with continually finer paper until you have gotten to at least 1000 grit. Then go to this method in the current video.

Novice here. I’m trying to restore trim on my car what are some dos and donts? As I’ve been looking into this so many opinions on what to use and not use or various products out there then stories of discoloring or “burning” trim?

I've burned trim, but only when I use a small sisal wheel. But I never use those anymore. You can remove the discoloration with more polishing. Only thing to worry about if you get it that hot is warping. I have an updated video on full trim restoration that is much better than this one.

Stupid question: I'm not sure on my 62 skylark what is stainless and what is steel chrome plated? Magnet test I suppose.

Good question, Dave. Once you get used to seeing this stuff every day, it's easy to tell just by looking. Generally, anodized aluminum trim has a haze to it, and won't polish up like stainless if you work it with a chrome polish. It's also much softer. Sometimes there is a bit of a rainbow halo in the light with anodized aluminum.

Thanks for watching. I have an updated video that does a much more in depth process. This was my first video…ever. And it literally was me just trying to help a friend across the country to show him how to shine some stainless up quickly so he could slap it on his race car. Thank you for your thoughtful comment, though. This isn’t my first day.
